Originally released in October of 1986, Tokushu Butai Jackal is a top down view action driving and shooting game where you are a member of an elite rescue team that's been assigned to a top secret mission to rescue POWs from enemy prison camps. Outside of Japan, the game is simply known as Jackal, while it is known as Top Gunner in North America. Your jeep has two weapons. A machine gun which can be used to eliminate common enemies such as soldiers on foot, and a grenade which can destroy stronger enemies quickly. During your rescue mission, you must break into enemy camps to rescue the POWs by destroying their prison huts. Some of the huts might even have a flashing POW which if picked up, can upgrade your secondary weapon (Grenade ➡️ Missile Launcher ➡️ Missile Launcher with leftmost and rightmost explosions ➡️ Missile Launcher with 4 way explosions that blasts in an X formation). Players should also bear in mind that you can only carry up to 8 POWs at one time. Once the rescue process is done, players must safely take the POWs to a helipad where a helicopter waits to take them home. The more POWs rescued, the bigger the bonus. Buy-in and Continue wise, Jackal operates in the same way as other Konami games of the time such as Salamander and Koi No Hot Rock (a.k.a. Rock 'N Rage) in which single player games are single credit affairs, unless a second player joins in. But even if continues are enabled, there will be a limit to how many times a player can continue, and this ability will end once the player reaches the final segment of the mission.
The implementation of the American flag was exclusive to the North American version known as Top Gunner where it was obviously intended to capitalize on the Vietnam War since they made the enemies have red flags which resembles Vietnam's flag and some enemy vehicles even bear a red star that represents the Viet Cong Army.
