  • I'm SO excited to share this Serena and Lilly DIY today! Courtney over at Steel Birch Studios is the OG PRO when it comes to this finish and she has inspired the world AND ME with her grasscloth techniques to try it out for the first time!
    Show Courtney some love 💕

I DID THIS PROJECT OVER 3 DAYS, waiting overnight for primer and BM advance white paint to harden a bit and then again overnight for the glaze to be DRY before the topcoat, you may need to wait longer depending on weather, thickness of application etc.
    Products Used:
Kills water based primer- Home Depot
    Valspar clear glaze- lowes
BM advance - super white (any brand semi gloss white paint is fine)
BM - HC 174 - Lancaster White Wash
Behr Water based matte polyurethane- Home Depot
    Gold ring pulls - Amazon
Sand paper 120 for deep scratches , 220 to smooth and 320 to smooth more and remove boogies after glaze dries
    Dog grooming brush - amazon - amzn.to/3NsJuq3
Epic professional wet brush- i bought mine at Walmart along time ago 😭 and they are sold out now. I found one on this site - prostylingtool...
But you could do what Steel birch does and use the blue dollar tree hand held small broom
Appreciate you reading the fine print till the end! 🫶🫶🫶🖤🖤🖤🖤

What a nice soft finish! It would be fun to see how this turns out with a soft grey paint!!

Quick question, just curious why do you still use a roller and not spray with a homeright sprayer etc?

Your S&L inspired dresser is super cool! I’m not sure I’m patient enough to do those specialty finishes that I would tackle when I was younger. So, on that note, do all of that stuff while you’re young and don’t put it off because I woke up one day and BAM, I was in my late 50s. Not complaining, getting older is certainly better than the alternative but I sure wish I could still do all the things I used to be able to do. ;-)

Have you tried Zinsser Smart Prime? I can’t say it’s my favorite because I’ve used it only once, but I didn’t have bleed through over pine, and I love the soap and water clean up.

I skip the primer because Annie Sloan paint is made for furniture and rarely needs any primer…saves a lot of money and time. Acrylic paint sits on the surface…so that’s why people have to prime…Annie Sloan paint gets into the furniture…so only need to wax…I have great success on all my pieces….her wax cures hard…your projects are beautiful when you get done…love all your ideas…thank you.

Hi Shannon, i was wondering if its okay to layer Oil based in water based products on the same piece of furniture. For example, use bulls eye zinzer primer, which is water based, and then an oil based paint on top. Is that okay

This video came at the perfect time. We have moved to the Georgia coast and I have been looking for a DIY paint technique to makeover my bedroom furniture. I love Serena and & Lily!!! Do you have a link for the brushes you used? I found the dog grooming brush but can’t find a Wet brush like yours. Thanks

Awesome! I really should have looked online before sharing the tutorial, I bought mine at Walmart and they are sold out 😭 there is only 1 site I could find it on, but you could also use a little hand held broom (that’s what steel birch studios uses, the blue little one from the dollar tree, here’s the like to the one I used in the video
