I'm a city boy. Born...bred...and buttered. Just love to escape to your Far North from time to time in your videos. I just kept looking at your amazing back yard. AWESOME !
Thanks. I camped out a lot as a kid and a teen, and tried to come up with a few simple and versatile ideas. This is probably the most simple and ingenious thing I have seen on shelters. Nice presentation style, too. Thanks again.
Amazing this man is using the most modern equipment such as video and internet but lives as people lived 200 years ago. It's like going back in time. Great stuff.
I've watched this at least 6 times. Thanks for the time and effort. Your clothes add to the ambiance of the times when this would have been a typical canvas tent setup. (If you've got it, flaunt it!) Knowledge passed on is knowledge preserved. Beautifully done.
Hi from Australia, very impressive. You are a genius. Never in a million years would I have thought that would work. Thank you for a very interesting and down to earth video. Cheers, Dennis.
Thank you for this video. My youngest grandson was visiting 2 weekends ago and decided he wanted to build a teepee. With adult supervision, he chose his poles from the woods, did the cutting and trimming to produce 3 poles. Keep in mind, he is only 8. He owns my heart. He draped an old tarp around his frame, but wasn't happy. We found a box of goat skin hides I been saving and now I am to sew together for a better fitting canvas. Your help with these videos are awesome.
Darn, it doesn't seem like, almost, two years since you made this video. It's just as good the second or third time viewing. Thanks for all of the hard work you've done on these videos! Clark
Lonnie, I have watched almost all your offerings over the years. I really appreciate your offerings. You are a mentor. I have learned much from you. Thank you very much. I hope you and Connie are well. All the best! -Jen True
What a great idea for a budget tent. Thanks for the idea. Love the buckskins by the way, gives you that frontiersman look. Expect to see Lewis and Clark show up for coffee. All the best, sir.
I'm from Illinois but have always longed to be in Alaska. I am 60 years old and my wife and I would love to have acerage ther in Alaska and homestead and be off the grid. Great job on the tarp tent. I am in awe of you and your wife. Keep the videos.
I have that same hat. I wore it on packing trips back in the day. My old head has fattened up, and I am sure it has dried out a good deal, but I might try to see if I can resize it and start wearing it again. Another good tarp set up.
Wow! What a location choice for filming. Nice and flat with a valley being containing a lake, back-dropped by snow-capped mountains and a pine forest. If I had anything like those mountains where I live I would just want to climb them. I would be out there everyday walking.
This video is already 3 years old and you look cool in those skins . Also you look much younger without your beard . Thanks for sharing and the teaching as I said I'll be checking out your videos. God bless.
Very well done, I thank you for posting this video. I have seen this style of tent at rendezvous but, I never ask how to assemble one. You made it look easy and described what and why you were doing it very well. Thanks again.
Far North Bushcraft And Survival i recently purchased 2 large canvas tarps..will be trying this. Thanks. Question..both tarps have a horrible strong chemical smell...have been outdoors almost a month in sun and rain hanging on a line...still smell BAD. what can i do..or is it normal...thanks
Thank you very much ... I know this video is quite old, But it's one, as well as others of yours that I've never seen. Isn't it great to have Memories of when we were younger my friend ? Even better when we have video of our memories. TY GOD above for a Amazing life that you've provided for us all. 🙏 Praying for World 🌎 ✌️ Peace. God Bless us all. From Big Jim New Hampshire USA aka Boston Strong
Great video Lonnie and Connie. I did learn something regarding the forked poles that you used for the tripod without lashing. I will need to try this out when I get time to head to our land. Greetings and take care - from SK Canada
that was really cool, i think i am going to try this tomorrow with my kid. she would love to make this. that would make a nice changing room at the beach .
I really liked this. You really made it easy to follow. Thank you much. Sometimes its hard to follow what people are saying. I love how you explained every thing and made it clear where everything is suppose to be. Thank you agian.
Cassie Cheney You are welcome. If you can understand and learn from our videos then we have done our job and have achieved our goal for the videos. Thank you.
Thanks for doing this! I am definitely going to get me a tarp now, I am convinced! There's no doubt in my mind I want to try this out in the Spring. I have seen some of your videos before and I thought they were great. After all the knot and cordage skills I have learned it's time to try out a tarp instead of a tent and I'm a do it the way you taught in these videos. I love the fact that you can use stones to create extra tie-off points, and use toggles and stakes made out wood instead of lumping tent pegs around. Replacing the tent poles with wooden ones also cuts down on unnecessary bulk!
Lonnie, I am so jealous. What a gorgeous place to set up and camp. Thanks for the video. Brings back memories of my Boy Scout days. We did everything the pioneer way, Wayyyyyy back then. Thanks from a new subscriber.
No problem, although a video would be nice. I particularly like your fringing, across the chest, the back, and down the sleeves. Just what I have been thinking so I will probably do something similar. Like you, I figured on creating my own pattern from a shirt and pants that seem to fit the design I have in mind. Thanks for all your great videos. I only discovered you a short time ago, but I have watched several of your video posts. Keep up the great work!
Canvas is a lot better in bad weather. It was all we had when I started camping in 50's. Most retail tents are only water resistent and not very good at that job. I just bought a good teepee tent and I love it. Really enjoyed your video. I just want to get back to the simple camping days.
Very nice video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I've tented in Canvas tents for some time and yet have learned a little something from your video that I had just never thought to do. Simple and effective! I'll be sharing your video with some friends.
Best back drop of any back packing video I have ever seen. I'm guessing its Alaska Maybe Canada or Montana maybe. I have a large Sil Nylon Tarp I could use for this. .
james barr HelloJames. No I don't run a survival school yet but may start something in the future. Yes I made my "buckskin" outfit. I made it over 30 years ago. It has been stored for many many years now and I just decided to get it out and wear it for a couple videos. It was great to wear the outfit again
Well, its impressive you still fit it! At any rate, be sure to update up subscribers should you start a school up there in Alaska. Ive been waiting for a good excuse to get up there. :)
I really like the closed front!! Think I'll try it with a little bigger tarp this fall, during hunting season. I would like to see how well a small Dakota fire pit works in it, seems how the top can be vented. I think I may have found my now fall and maybe winter tent! THANKS!!!
Good informative video, I just subscribed to your channel. I lived in Knik & Wasilla when I ran casing on the slope. Alaska is a sight to behold. Thanks.
I have been country all my life, that was interesting, thank you. My neighbour gave me some big RV tarps, 4 season all insulated, thanks for some ideas.
I like how you hung the tarp from the tripod. Seems like I could prefab a tent from a large plastic tarp by hanging it from such a tripod, staking the corners, folding the left over excess underneath and somehow seal the bottom edges to the floor with glue and tape to make it waterproof. Then, all you'd need to do is make a tripod each time. I don't know how well it would work, but you always give me ideas for making things. Now I have a new project.
+jonnyboat2 Yes a plastic tarp works fine. I did a 3 part series on making a tipi from poly tarps and I used Gorilla tape in the construction of the tipi. Gorilla tape has a better adhesive as well as being heavier duty tape itself than plain duct tape. The tipi series is here at the following link if you are interested and have not seen them already. ruclips.net/p/PL_fotv96EsweyRrySfWPBvI1ZgARTNFAv
Good stuff as always putting one together to have at elk camp. and ya know I even used a couple of them tarps to cover the couch in my RV worked great thanks your video brought that Idea to mind thanks.
Hey y'all, interesting vid. I did learn something from it. I would strongly advise y'all to learn as many different tarp set ups as you can and then go out and try them out. Learn by doing. I personally don't like tents or tent set ups but will do so if I have to. Thank you Lonnie for this vid because it taught me something and gave me a few ideas on how to improvise. Good job man.
Hi, i watched your other video which you mentioned about how to cut tarp to make itlook like this, but i was thinking what we can do if i dont want to cut my tarp. Your way is a genious way and i am sure from no onwards i can remember you everytime i make this setup. Thanks a lot and have a fantastic years ahead. Please keep it up, you wont know how much it helps someone like me. Love and light.
Great idea Lonnie. Only, im going to use as a outhouse enclosure. Not at all meaning to insult your fine work. I have a spacious tipi tent turned to hot tent, was researching ways to make a potty tent/camping shower tent, us guy can just use a tree...but with your lady, better to prepare for her. Your great concept is perfect. Im 5'11 rather tall, those ive seen are small and the shower tarps that companies sell, are like a body bag, not very comfortable for a camp shower. Its actually a good idea to clean off when on the long camp trips. Also, there are many people who live off grid, out in the sticks, in tents or dug out or hobit houses, this would be a great idea for a shower house for them. This type of lifestyle is becoming more popular because our world is becoming very weird and bugging out kits are on the rise. Ive been camping since a small kid, its like ingrained, my wife and I camped all over the Rocky Mountains in the harshest of conditions, we have turned roughing it into glamping ... nice, easy, relaxing having a good time, even if the weather is bad, can still have a great camp trip. You and I know what to do out in the woods, but many people dont know, I think videos like yours will help people survive when shyte hits the fan..and that may just come.
Lon, thanks for taking time to make your vids. Spent 2 wks in Alaska 3 rs ago. U R a lucky man! I made a tarp tent per your previous vid. One problem I had when setup as shown here is that those corner flaps that are folded in at rear corners wick water into tent and soak anything placed on them. Just a problem using untreated cotton. I would roll those flaps up and leave outside the tent. (simulated HEAVY downpour w garden hose.) Also, my tarp faded noticeably after only 4 hrs in sun (cont)...
This has inspired me to explore wilderness shelters further, thank you! If I ever get to Alaska, would love to come and see what you guys do! Thanks again, will be checking out more of your videos :)
What a spectacular view- I'm surprised you could get anything done. I think I may have just pulled up a rock or log and let time get away from me gazing at that scenery!
Thanks Lonnie, Connie, great idea !!! My brother just confirmed my invitation to go camping with me this summer. I'm so excited, it will be my first time ever !!! Having a Severely handicapped child I've never been anywhere in my life cuz I can't trust anyone to care for him properly. So this will be such a treat for me you have no idea !! I have a little 2 person tent but it got ruined in the yard during a storm. We've had 3 big noreaster STORMS in 2 weeks here recently so I haven't a tent anymore 😢. I had it set up cuz that's my dream to go camping, so I'd go outside and make a fire and just hangout by myself having fun LoL. I can't really afford another so this could be an option for us. Moneys a bit tight with my son and all so this may work. My ex can care for our boy and for once in many many years I can have 24 hours to myself 🙌. Anyhow as always thank you for teaching me something new !!! God bless you and yours 😇👍👍👍👍👍
Awesome. I hope you do get the chance to go camping and fulfill your dream. I respect you for making the care of your son such a high priority. A relatively inexpensive poly tarp from WalMart should work just fine for this style of shelter. A tarp from an expensive material is not needed. A cheap material may not last as long as say a nylon tarp but will still keep the rain off and shelter an occupant just as well.
I have used this tarp set up and it works great.I actually used this in the winter with a beer keg stove in the front door way and the chinmey going out the doorway. lol Wow omg gorgeous back ground man. Tho i use a 10x12 tarp when i set mine up this way, usually for two people. You can see the tarp i have set up in my intro vid with the chimney thru the door. Great job Lonny
Lonnie, Love the new intro and new look to the videos. It might be my imagination, but the video seems much clearer/better quality compared to your older vids. Great explanations as usual and of course the back drop is just breathtaking. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Larry
I'm a city boy. Born...bred...and buttered.

OMG. This is by far the best backpacking tent I have ever seen! Not just for the money, but functionality as well. Very impressed
Darn, it doesn't seem like, almost, two years since you made this video. It's just as good the second or third time viewing.
Thanks for all of the hard work you've done on these videos!

Great video, nice to see something on RUclips regarding bushcraft that is an old school, low tech solution.
Thank you and also I absolutely love your clothes! And that scenery is breathtakingly beautiful!
You quite the scenery yourself darlin....;))))

I used the closed door method and I have a 12x12. works great. I had an extra tarp that I used as my floor. very spacious and comfortable.
Very nice setup indeed Lonnie. Thanks for sharing. Regards, Lars

Still my favorite of your videos! Your buckskins and trimmed beard are outstanding. The teepee is special, too. Very Western for an Alaskan.
Great ideas and a fantastic outfit man you did a great job.

Only the experience can made the man. Thanks for video

Great vid. Very informative. Thank you for taking the time to teach RUclips land. Keep up the good work. Take care.
This may be the most brawlic shirt Ive ever seen. Looks like it would be great for windy days on a cycle.
Two of two videos from you ive seen now that really helps in the wilderness!! Keep making those nice videos.
Great video Lonnie I have used tarps for years BUT not the way you have and I like that. Take care digger
I really like the closed front!! Think I'll try it with a little bigger tarp this fall, during hunting season. I would like to see how well a small Dakota fire pit works in it, seems how the top can be vented. I think I may have found my now fall and maybe winter tent!
THANKS!!!
Great idea with the door flaps. Thanks for sharing.
that took a bit of thinking to get those angles. nice easy set up once you get them in line. ths good video malcolm from british columbia
Love it, and love the buck-skin too! Going to have to play with tarps at the wekend now..Thanks for sharing
Cheers
Nige.
Love this video. You have a great Bob Ross calmness. Really cool.
Awesome video. Very helpful. Now I have to go outside and try to actually do it. Thanks.
Wow...What a beautiful spot! I'm jealous! Great video, I dig that configuration.
That back round is amazing!!!!!!
Great video. Useful tripod tent tutorial. Nice
Clothing stile.

Great job Lonny

great job you are good I learn a lot from you keep it going
Lonnie,
Love the new intro and new look to the videos. It might be my imagination, but the video seems much clearer/better quality compared to your older vids. Great explanations as usual and of course the back drop is just breathtaking. Thanks for sharing.
Take care,
Larry
