    Love to hear your comments and genuine questions! I'm here to help you understand this bike!
    If you came to leave a comment like, "That's not a real bike. It's a crappy toy e-Bike!" or some nonsense like that because you're insecure about getting smoked by an e-bike and want to feel Alpha because you can make noise & smoke on your old roach while you drag race up your Mom's driveway, please spare us all. We can do without your input.

      Tony V the future so bright gotta wear 😎 After sitting on this thing for 10 hours I can’t wait to see more ⚡️😍 Once people ride them it’s pretty much game over.
      I rode for 1h15m in the street & my driveway at 7pm tonight and nobody even noticed. The neighborhood dogs (that bark in half my videos) didn’t even bark 🤣

    Great review, John. Thank you! I've been watching your vids since you bought and started posting on it. And thanks for going into so much detail rather than high level overview fluff. Interesting hearing the session time you get out of it. Seems reasonable for what it is. There are not very many sources for trail riding range, however. Mostly hard riding range. I know it's not your cup of tea, but maybe you (or a trusted friends that is more of a trail rider) could go out and run it ONLY in mode 1 and taking it easy and not running it wide open very much, and trail ride it until dead. That would give the other end of the spectrum for max range and would be very interesting for those that want a name-brand electric motorcycle for not only racing around, but want to also use it for trail riding.
    I've got a little electric that has me hooked (though I still love my ICE bikes) but I need more than the 25 - 30 mile range I'm getting. If the KTM Freeride E-XC electric is capable of 35 or maybe even 40 miles of easy going trail or forest service road ride, I'm in. That range would cut it for about 1/3 of the trips we do. Will use one of my ICE dirtbikes/dualsports for the remainder...until electrics can do an honest 60 - 70 mile trail ride. (I know Zero FX will go that far, but don't consider that bike a offroad bike as I don't want to mod it like crazy from the factory just to get it there. Zero won't sell a consumer version of the Zero MMX to the public). Thanks and keep up the great reviews! Chad.

      Not sure Mode 1 is of much use unless you were like on smooth slow winding single track. Like “hiking trail” single track, and it would also depend on the grades. Mode 1 is about worthless outside of teaching someone to ride, big downhills for re-gen, playing in the driveway, loading into the truck, or anything below 15mph-ish. After that 15-30 you can hold the momentum... like if you were riding it on a pump track or pit bike track. And it would be fun... like a momentum challenge. Think XR80.
      I mostly use it for puttering around and riding the course to hop on and off to throw rocks and sticks, set up cameras etc.. I do use it often enough... but I really don’t “ride’ in it. I guess it was fine for putting down a really rocky creek bed last week. I suspect you could get 35 on a really easy trail or road at hunting or looking at the birds type paces. I feel like 40 might probably out of reach. I’d be curious to know. Not sure I have the flat enough course, patience, or time to try it. There may be one section fire road I could buzz up and down a few times that could be a fair test. Just sucks I have to commute almost two hours to test only that. Maybe I could turn it into the very first Freeride MotoVLOG 🤣
      The more I think about it, the more I sort of want to do it. I have been enjoying the serenity of puttering around. It’s not something I’ve ever experienced on a Dirtbike. It’s like hiking, without the work, while holding onto a dirtbike. I’ll put it on the back burner 🤣
      Shit... now I need to go back outside for another driveway session 😆⚡️

      Rode the driveway and out in the street for 1h15m tonight in the dark doing balancing drills and stuff. Of course neighbors didn’t know or care. Haha! Nearly all in Mode 1 except a few wheelies. I think it was like 6 miles. All kinds of fun. Never dropped off the first light 100-70. I bet it’s still 90%
      I know that doesn’t really answer the question yet, but I thought I would share that you can dink around on the thing for a VERY long time if going easy in 1. And it’s a real motorcycle under you. Honestly doesn’t feel a whole lot different that my 350 to move around... like balancing and lock turns. Body feel is a little different because of the long flat seat instead of a tank and overall a little slimmer. I love this thing. LOL

      @@JohnHowerton137 Thanks. We do lots of types of riding in the mountains (hotrod rides with buddies and slow and easy going group rides with family, friends, kids on minibikes, atvs, side by sides, etc.). On the days where we are doing slow and relaxing forest service road riding, it is more about seeing the sights than performance and the mountain views are well worth it. It's nice because on the fast days, I'm focused on the trail and don't see much. On the mellow rides, I actually get to look around the entire time. It's great.
      On my Surron X in eco mode, I get about 25 - 35 miles range riding pinned in eco mode. Eco mode maxes at about 20mph and is plenty fast to keep ahead of the group on these easy going rides, so I doubt the KTM mode 1 is "worthless" compared to that. Ha. It's just not mode 2 and mode 3 type of fun. The Surron X will run about 45mph in Sport mode, but range goes down to about 20 miles. An entirely different type of riding on that little thing than a full sized bike (my ICE dirtbikes or a more fullsize electric), but the price was right to give it a try and now I'm hooked on electric so want a "real" electric dirtbike. Hence the interest in this KTM.
      With the torque of electric, I'm sure the KTM mode 1 could still drive up all of the service roads and climb all the hills the little Surron can. For those steep hill encounters, modes 2 or 3 are just a click away. So yes, still interested in a "Mode 1, 20 mph fire road cruise - max mileage test"...and there is the title for your video! No one seems to want to do this type of test when there are many potential buyers out there that are not even considering this bike because that "trail ride max range" is an unanswered question. Yes most of us will still be using it for shorter, high performance Off Highway Vehicle area rides, but I, and many others, can't justify buying this bike unless it has enough easy going, mode 1 range to also use it for the trail riding (for me, wife, or friends and family, etc.). Might bore you to tears, but many of use would appreciate and value the results! Thanks.

I mean come on, we get to see the future of motorcross and enduro unfold before our eyes. I just cant get over how awsome these E-bikes are and how crazy good they will become over time. And for everyone worrying if they're Team Gas or Team Electric...You CAN love two things at once. Its like boobs.

    Hi John
    Nice review ;) and love your other videos as well
    I have been looking into buying one for some time now.. I have been looking at a 2019 model since it’s a bit cheaper than going for a brand new 2020 model. Do you know what the difference is between the 2019 and the 2020 model?

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  4 года назад

      Asge Brodersen nothing different at all. The big change was 2018 with the new battery. 2021 gets new brakes because the 85SX got new ones, so I imagine KTM stuck them on the Freeride too to streamline production.
      So freakin fun. I haven't ridden mine for like 9 weeks now 😩 I miss that damn thing like a child! LOL.
      My new reworked shock came today and thinking the forks may be here on Tues. They got dual cartridge MX deluxe treatment. So stoked to try it out! I should be cleared for offroad riding in 3 weeks and going to jump the poo out of it. Haha!

      @@JohnHowerton137 Cool ;)
      It’s like 10 years since I’ve been on an mx.. My son is now an age(3 years) where he has started to show more and more interest in the world of mx.. We have just ordered and “kuberg start” for him as his first start e-bike. I think that the KTM freeride E would be perfect to ride around with him. We could use it close to the house and on the local forest trails…
      I still have friends that ride 250 4-stroks mx, and it also seems that I still would be able to go ride with them using the KTM Freeride E ;). So it’s a good compromise instead of going full blown gas MX bike. (I also don’t have a lot of time to do maintenance on the bike (oil, air filter etc..)
      You mention the shock as being not/semi-not sufficient on an MX track. I’m not an advanced rider at all, more beginner level. My last MX was a KTM 450 SX-F. That bike was way overpowered for me and I never got confident riding it.
      Can I bring it to the local mx track with all default setup and still have a fun time?
      Based on my riding level(beginner), do you think that I should expect to customize the bike to be satisfied with the default shocks? I weigh around 90 Kg.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  4 года назад +1

      Asge Brodersen sounds like its perfect for what you need. It'll put perfectly and forever (6 hours?) in Mode 1 with the little guy.
      If you aren't bombing jumps on it, it'll be fine. My Freeride riding buddy in the other videos weighs the same as you. The bikes did OK for jumping around the house, but at the higher speed MX stuff it was total clankfest. It's still fun, but when you're trying to hang with the other A riders on 450s... she didn't enjoy that too much 🤣 Another upper shock bolt fell victim.
      When your boy starts to whip your butt, just send the suspension off 🤣 It works totally fine for roots and rocks in lower speed single track. The only thing I had suspension wise in any of my currently uploaded videos is a set of stiffer fork springs. My buddy's bike bone stock with clickers cranked 😋

    Nice honest vid J. Completely agree, why, WHY ktm doesn't use a double pinch up top is a real head scratcher.🤔
    Going to refer friends to this feed on getting these dialed in and tricked to tears. (And yes, we all know combustion engines are solid tech. But 80 years ago we would store meat in BARRELS OF SALT.. then, someone put an "electric refrigerator" in a house and we moved on...🤣..)

      I’m looking into an X-trig set-up right now. Currently it’s a little out of budget. Already blew the tax return. Going to go start fiddling and filming another mod right now. Hoping it works as expected.
      Hilarious, I use fridge examples for technology that we forget all the time! 🤣 External combustion candles were setting Christmas trees and houses on fire not to long ago too. Electricity was scary because it would ooze from the outlet and electrocute you when your weren’t looking. Then we got the electric lightbulb and everyone forgot about Great-Great-Grandma who died in a house fire from candle light or wiping all the whales out of the ocean to run lamps.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  4 года назад +3

      It's honestly not that short. Just depends on how it's ridden... no different than a gas bike. The 13-17 models were a little short, but the newer ones are in line with the gas Freerides.
      My trail ride yesterday was 2hrs moving and 17.7 miles. 4 miles was paved road and about another 6 on firebreaks. Long stretches under load like that is where you lose battery. Still had 45% battery, and my less throttle/wheelie happy friend's 50% light came on right when we got to the truck.
      I've done 9 miles worth of jumps in the yard and only dropped like 30%
      I plan to race a scramble/enduro type race on it, if it gets rescheduled. 2x 30min format. Will bring the generator just in case I need a top up between motos.

      It's about the same as the 2015 Freeride 250R, plus the E-XC is way more efficient because you're not idling or engine braking. Most people on gas bikes don't rip the same way you could do on an electric bike.

      Not in the USA. 100 in 2017 and 100 in 2020.
      I highly doubt it will change. They wont drop it for an all new model or anything next year. And the battery updated in 2018. I guess that could update again, but my guess is another year there as well.
      Who knows if they'll skip importing again next year. I hope to help generate more hype to keep the demand up and keep getting them into the US consistently and in bigger numbers. A lot of people need these.

      Didn't want to buy a brand not in business was the main reason. KTM is only going to evolve these.
      2. Had just built a 250SX for MX
      3. Wanted a bike for tight spaces and gnarly stuff. Register it street legal and ride anywhere 😍
      Ended up loving it for everything and dont ride any of my other bikes! Selling my 250SX right now as a result and my 350EXC is already gone.
      Considering a Alta as my main MX bike for large spaces, but I'm not wealthy enough to take the resale hit when there is no parts 5 years from now. Probably end up with a 250XC-F if I can find one. Will work as an ok track bike and I can do long rides too. Honestly I dont want it though 🤣
      It's not an Alta, but it is badass and mostly what I need and better at some things... for no other reason it's lighter.

      lessdeth69 not going to lie, sometimes I wish it had an optional one too, but honestly, not having one has actually made me a better rider. It's not a deal breaker, that's for sure.
      These have a TON more power than the OSETs, so you don't really miss it unless you want to seat bounce or splatter or something like that. Then it's mostly just a riding style change to accomplish that task.

    • @JohnHowerton137

      Right now it has a MT16 front which I’m a little surprised I like because of the higher volume (rear should work good too), and a Dunlop 952 110/90 on the rear for lower profile to stiffen up the sidewall. It’s not horrible, but I don’t love the 952 (wish it was a 756 😭 #disco). I think the compound is too hard and this bike will always benefit from a gummy, even in MX tires. MT 16 is coming off soon too. Has sidewall damage from a rock, but holding at the moment and spent a lot of money this last week 🤣
      I wanted to put and IRC IX-09 on the rear, but didn’t want the sidewall height. I took a gamble and just got a CST Surge in a 100/90-18. Hoping🤞the compound doesn’t suck. Price was right! We’ll see if it noticeably affects the gearing due to being smaller.

    You complain about the trail/ trials stock setup but its not the SX?

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  4 года назад

      It wasn't a complaint. It's important that people know the limitations of the stock setup so they don't come into the bike with high expectations for something it's not. There's 100 comments and quotes from me online defending the suspension.
      That said, If I was being critical of the stock setup, the front seems a little under-sprung (one rate) and the rear shock could use a little better bottoming resistance. Even for a trail bike. This would improve the handling, even at slow speeds. I only weigh 150lbs.
      There's 10,000 ding-dongs online who think when you buy an $11,000 motorcycle everything should be setup perfectly, for no other reason than they paid what they feel is a lot of money. While it is a lot of money, that's what dirtbikes cost now and it's not going to be perfect for almost anyone. This is why there's an entire industry revolving around suspension set-up.
      I love the bike. Do I wish I had the option of getting a motocross version? Yes. Don't know that I would have though. I also think it should be 50 state street legal for the price. Should be $1k cheaper like a gas XC.
      Fact remains... I wanted one, therefor I get what I get and modify it accordingly.

      Transmission oil for the countershaft I imagine. It's only every 50 hours, and a very small amount. This is a long time. Petrol bikes are about every 15 hours.

      Yes, but only 12 dealers. Search the comments on this video and the First Ride video. I've posted the 12 dealers a few times.
      There is only 100 units nationwide. When I started pumping out videos I know they started selling fast. Subs and the Dealers told me as much. My dealer was sitting on 5 and no sales. 3 weeks later... all sold and 2 more pre-sold 🤣 My guess is KTM will import more units for 2021.

      Number plate for a late model 85SX. Just needs like a 25mm bolt with some locktight because the computer bracket doesn’t allow a close bolt up to the triple clamp.

However, I have 16 forested acres and live adjacent to an extensive County OHV Trail System, and this bike suddenly makes way more sense for what I really want a new dirt bike for in my 57 YO old Country Boy life: Easier to use most of the time, but it appears that it would give me all of 😛the moto-buzz when-EVER I ask. Unless you absolutely shred those woods, it'll get 90min. Normal trial riding stuff typically would go 2 hours plus. If you have the old MXC with the big 5 gal fuel tank, it'll handle a bit like that (top heavy). It's a little weird at first, but you get use to it pretty quickly.
      The hand brake is really nice in the trail and also works like a faux clutch. When slippery it's a little weird/hard at first without a clutch, but it's also nice to NEVER stall. You can just drag the brake a little to load the motor for a little more traction.
      Overall it's just a different experience. Once you adapt to that, you quickly realize how much more of a pain in the ass it is to ride a gas bike.

      @@JohnHowerton137 Thanks for the extra info, it appears it will tire me out before I tire it's battery out most of the time. Worse case, since all the trails are uphill from my house, I can set some regen & gather more juice, and just coast the last stretch to home! My MXC is just a stock 3.1 gallon, but my old 990 ADV has the 11 gallon Safari tanks, so I can understand the feeling.
      There are a dozen or so in stock locally (dream), but I have to wait a month or so (reality) before I can bite.

    Based on you experience with the KTM brand, do you think they will update the model for 2021? Because what I would want is an updated battery (5 kwh would be nice) and a raised top speed...at least 60mph.

      That wont be there. Battery tech isn’t there. It won’t go 60 either, unless they released a beefed up SM, which I don’t see coming.
      Most states should dual sport it, and next year prob will from the showroom I’d bet. I’d have an answer for you already, but the pandemic delayed that video a month or two.

      @@JohnHowerton137 the dealer I spoke to says that they register it as ATV so not possible to dual sport it. could that change just by state laws or does it have to do with the model itself?

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  4 года назад +1

      Greg Melita both. The MSO does NOT state "for off-road use only." If the dealer processes the paperwork that way, well then the DMV could kill it.
      The way I understand it... now there's a Vin database. When KTM finally get's this model as an "enduro" in the US, the older models should go retroactive. That's a risk of course if you want one now. Many states just don't care as long as it has all the street legal bells & whistles installed. It's electric for crying out loud!

      Lorenzo Cox Gandia agreed. If the bike is used in the context it was designed for it's ok, but when you push it, the limitations get seen pretty quickly.

      Lorenzo Cox Gandia I promise I will. I may make it before I’m cleared (hopefully 10/26/20), but I kind of wanted to be able to ride it so it wasn’t just a “Trust me and drop $X,xxx on suspension.” That said, some people may have an understanding of why what we did will work, so maybe I’ll just make an explanation video of “why I did it and how it should/will work” with a disclaimer that I haven’t fully tested the resulting product.

      I used to sell these things for a living and have been around them my whole life. If you're a trail rider, maybe get the Honda CRF150F or TTR125.
      If you want to motocross race eventually, get a CRF150R... and don't get a brand new anything. It's a waste of money for a beginner to buy a brand new bike unless you're rolling in cash. A clean late model bike from the past 5 years is totally fine. Roche it out for a year or two and then buy a brand new one if you have the money to.

      Not trying to talk you out of your dream, but the 125SX really isn't the right bike for you. It's like giving a brand new Ferrari to a 16-year-old... kind of a distaster. One of the CRF150 models would be a lot more compatible. Ideally the F, especially if your main riding is trails. Those things practically bombproof and you'll actually be able to manage it and have fun on it, take it camping etc... 125SX is not a put around bike to learn on and has exponentially higher maintenance that you can't slack on. You'll be fouling $9 spark plugs constantly and will struggle as a beginner to even stay on it at your height.
      If you could find a Freeride 250F that would totally work, but not many out there.
      It's not fun spending a huge about of money to find out it's not the right bike or getting one that completely scares you away from the sport. Just trying to be real with you.
