I liked a number of tracks off this album but ultimately i felt a bit disappointed. I think a lot of it felt very by the numbers and didn't really have a core concept to ground it like girl with basket of fruit, nina or forget. Instead it seems like they're playing really hard on this xiu xiu rock album aesthetic that's not quite batting at the average their other albums are. I was really interested to see how xiu xiu executed a rock album and i just wasn't that impressed overall.
I feel what you’re saying & I was initially a little turned off by the sonic palette on songs like venificium but it’s grown on me like crazy bc the core concept (which took awhile to really crystallize for me) is so perfectly echoed by the sounds and how they change over the course of the album. Like for me personally it moves from a beautiful fantastical commitment to and belief in love (romantic & familial) on arp Omni to slowly peeling away at the beautiful veneer which culminates with some kind of awful traumatic incident that shatters the illusion of a functioning romance/family and explores the aftermath of and confrontation with that (respectively) on Bobby bland and piña, coconut & cherry. The way they keep the same sonic elements but shatter them and make them not cohere on those last two songs is just such a crushing way to show that what seemed so perfectly whole is now fragmented and horribly strewn about-it was all FANTASTYFANTASYFANTASY. It’s still not sonically my favorite xiu xiu album but I can’t think of another album that has crushed me so completely with its content (which for most xiu xiu fans-probably u included given that u like girl w basket-is the highest praise)
