This recording was made with the harmonic pedal only, alternating between resonance half position in the relatively quiet and quick parts and sustain position in the loud and quick parts. The sustain position of the harmonic pedal was used throughout the the slow middle section.
The resonance half position of the harmonic pedal allows a type controllable reverberation which can unify passages which could otherwise run the risk of blurring with the traditional sustain pedal.

The amazing part of the piano is that, by clearly separating the main melody notes and the secondary ones, it sounds as if there were 4 hands playing, not just two. I find that incredible and absolutely amazing!
Poly riddims
Its called chopin magic
I play the drums, watching this I feel like the musical equivalent of a caveman. I hit things and they make noise.
dude I laughed so hard
So does the piano
Ezra Bernstein exactly
Drums are fake and gay
federico saviano
No, they are not
This may be the best performance of this piece on RUclips. Absolutely PERFECT Paul!
medicropper Hello! I agree with you he is really talented ! I also made a performance of this piece, check it if you have time :)
wtf you have so many private videos on weed . . . lol
medicropper His performance is awesome.
Horowitz is better :)
The best is yundi li
I liked the part when he plays the piano
Me too man. Me too
What's a piano?
I like the part where he plays fantasise impromptu
Pato Peje I like
Charlie Wells it’s like a thing where you cam press keys and it makes sound
Imagine someone improvising like this. That's how Chopin apparently could play
Rockstar Pirate So incredibly gifted 😭😭
UrLocalAsian07 Not gifted, incredibly hard workig
not gifted, hard working? chopin spent only around 1 hour daily to play piano when he was a child, there were periods in his life that he didnt play piano for MONTHS, yet he had incredible playing technique and creativity to compose. He started to play more when he was like 14 years old and decided to become a professional musician. There are people who dedicated their life to piano and train several hours daily since years and can't even be compared to him. Gift and genius over hard work in this case.
He didn't just sit down and played it outta nowhere
true, but repeating myself, you can't call that "incredibly hard working"
I wish he had professional recordings up on spotify or any major platforms. I'm sure many like me would enjoy having them as an option outside of youtube. Such beautiful piano playing.
You, sir, have brought back many wonderful memories of when I first discovered Chopin's beautiful music. This was one of the first pieces by him which I heard, and yet, in all this time, yours is the only one in which I am able to find such remarkable clarity and understanding. I can simply close my eyes and imagine Chopin's deepest emotions flowing from the piano. Exceptional technique and heartwarming performance, Mr. Barton.
this is a refreshing interpretation. I'm not sure how I like it compared to the standard, but I cannot deny how well defined your notes were for how fast you were playing. You're a cut above the rest, Paul.
This is really what puts this rendition on a different level from the others on RUclips. The clarity and definition of the individual notes. They all tend to blur together in the other cover renditions. It's mastery of the fundamental elements like that which seperate the mediocre from the great.
M Phylo I came back after hearing Rousseau’s version and in that version, everything is blended together as one continuous sound. In this version the notes are easier to distinguish from the rest and it doesn’t just sound like a continuous wave of notes being played if you know what I mean, greater clarity in his playing?
Those trills in the slow part were trippy AF to listen to cuz he starts on the note after it and plays four notes in his trill instead of just going one note up and back. That's why I don't really like this rendition.
This is by far the best performance video of "Fantasie Impromptu" I have watched on RUclips! Really loved it!
This is the best Performance of Fantaisie-Impromptu I have ever heard. Your Articulation and Technique is amazing. You make it sound so Crisp, clear, and fluid at the same time. Amazing Performance.
Jsuis dac‘
I really like this interpretation of the piece, the almost staccato presto parts have a mesmerizing effect
one day I will be able to play every piece by Chopin, that is my goal in life :)
How's it going so far
xdeadstepx good luck with polonaise op 53 in a major :P
Kenneth so far I can play the melody for the Nocturne Op.9 no. 2 (the chords are crazy for a beginner player), and the first 12 measures to the prelude Op.28 no. 4 (my main focus currently)
That's a huge goal... I don't even have one.
nothing is impossible but you would probably be a prof classical pianist
Playing so smoothly
A touch that is both deliciously fluent and remarkably fluid. Paul Barton, thank you.
I love to listen to this piece every day in the morning before setting off for work. The speed, skill, and finesse of Mr. Barton coupled with the divine composition gets me in a positive and happy frame of mind that stays with me throughout the day. Thank you so much.
I’m studyng this piece
Every time i think i’m doing well i come back here to remember that i’m not😂
Best performance on RUclips
I wish I had skill but the only time I move my fingers this fast is when I burn them trying to cook so...
Tea Spiller SHSHSHSHS SAME 😂❤️
You can do it!
Just, uh, toooo much practice
Practice >>>>> skill
Yes at least you have good staccatos
Qwertyuoip 123 i think what you meant was practice>>raw talent. practice leads to skill but practice beats raw talent any day because practice is hard work and raw talent is just something you were luckily born with
your fingere play so softly and perfectly on the keys it almost makes me think you are going to play the peice wrong. absolutely incredible
ONE of my favorite version. Avery single note are hearable ..not too fast, smooth clean: perfect!
I keep coming back to this rendition. It's one of the best or even the best I've seen on RUclips. Such clarity and dynamics!
This is a very good interpretation and performance of the piece. I love the fact that you don’t drown the piece into a sustainpedal-mess. Way to many performances(even top-of-the-pop concert pianists)uses way to much sustainpedal which really really hurt the articulation. And your timing is pretty much perfect. Well done:-)
Amazing performance !
*MAGNIFIQUE interprétation* Maestro Paul !! douce harmonie ....
+Marie Krantz -- merci beaucoup!
Marie Krantz Shiza
Douceur de commentaire , Paix sur vous Marie Krantz
Marie Krantz Bonjour ! Je suis totalement d'accord, son interprétation est magnifique
J'interprète aussi cette piece sur ma chaine n'hésitez pas à venir.voir :)
This play has more jewels than just the historical performance with an 19th-century-tuned piano. I can now hear the sensitivity of the melodies from Chopin's Fantasie-impromtu, which I could not hear from other few young artists' play. Mr. Paul Barton seems the best artist in understanding the sensitivity of the 19th century piano pieces.
Oh my goodness, I love the way you play the middle section! Not overly bleeding-heart romanticized, which so many pianists have the tendency to do! And I love your ornaments! So elegant! Not to mention how wonderfully crisp and clean the A section is! An eye-opening performance! Brilliant! Bravo 👏 👏👏❤️❤️❤️
I like that staccato, very integrated in the piece.
Also, the upper view gives the opportunity to learn the technique and all.
Nicely done !
There's so much emotion that Chopin had. I love it. He's the best. We will always remember you.
Wow...just wow! Fantastic interpretation and technique.
I never thaught there would be anybody who could play this piece so flawlessly, who could even play it but you proved me wrong
one of the BEST interpretation I've ever seen
Enjoying your beautiful playing on a relaxing Sunday. What a world we live in ❤🎉
Best performance on youtube. So accurate and played as chopin intended. Thank you for this.
Да, пожалуй лучшее исполнение после Кисина и Трифонова.
Absolutely amazing how you make every note count, exactly how this should be played
I have never heard a piano sound so great before.
One of the best performances of this piece I have heard. Bravo!
omg i´m getting cramps only lisening to this my fingers are already cramped
if you're getting cramps then you're not playing correctly
Pikachu Kid - he’s getting cramps just listening to it. He’s probably not listening correctly 🤷🏻♂️
One of my favorites... thank you Paul, this is such a beautiful song with your amazing touch.
This is the best performance for this piece ever .
I love the way this piece goes from frenetic to calm.
I love how straight and precise you are with your movements. Most pianists show off so much it's annoying sometimes.
Hacker0_o it’s technique, and those pianists are not showing off... they’re actually controlling dynamics tenderly.
Ludwig van Beethoven Yes I agree, I even think it's more annoying when people criticize pianists for those movements when they don't realize that they are a massive help for creating good articulation, and done for that reason (not for show-off purposes)
If you don't know about piano techniques, you need to shut up. Those pianists are not showing off.
One of the best performances I have ever seen, this is one of my favorite pieces! You did absolutely splendid!
WAWWWWWW!!! I could listen to this forever ! So much emotion !! Tu m'as complètement emportée dans un autre univers!
Its good to remember that this music was created while the composer was struggling financially. And that is true for all great classical era music writers.
Amazing! Time motivates me to practice my own skills! Wish to play like that some day.
Monsieur Barton, non seulement vous jouez merveilleusement bien, mais vous le faîtes aussi pour de pauvres éléphants, ce qui ne fait qu'ajouter une touche de bonheur à votre talent. Merci pour nous, merci pour eux.
Fantastic!! No words. So smooth.
One of the most beautiful pieces ever written. Gorgeous work.
Excellent! I can really hear the difference that the use of the harmonic pedal makes in the first half. I was brought up playing a C19th piano which was much less resonant than a modern one. It was possible to play romantic music with greater clarity while still using legato pedalling; this performance is very evocative of that effect.
+David Hillary -- yes David, exactly, the piano you played was a very different instrument to our modern grand piano, the pedaling in his Etudes for example is a challenge on the modern piano. Can I ask you, in you memory of this piano was the action lighter too?
+Paul Barton Hi Paul, the action certainly wasn't heavy but the notable thing was that the key dip was much shallower than on a modern instrument which, of course, made rapid passage playing much easier.
Finally someone who got the rhythm in harmony , beautiful! Thank you for sharing
shit this piece is fantastic and you play the hell out of it
Playing with a 390kg monster would be an awesome experience. One of the best covers on youtube.
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow -
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand -
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep - while I weep!
O God! Can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
I've always thought music and poetry go hand-in-hand :)
I'm not into poetry, but when combined with music, totally
Kad Lasty Ah if it isn't Edgar Allan Poe.
wow totally random but i am up at 3 am listening to one of my favorite pieces by Chopin while writing an explication of A Dream Within A Dream in which i chose. crazy

Umm id like to point out that most people watching this dont understand how perfect he played this song.
Im in awe
Actually.. most people do. You are not special.
Brilliant performance. Perfect balance between making it your own and following Chopin's plan of execution for this extraordinary piece. Well done.
this song is insane but insanely great
I am kind of an expert at listening to this specific piece, I have listened to so many recordings. This rendition is outstandingly good!
0:03 okay ..
0:06 yeah I can do that
0:14 wtf ..
...wtf
...wtf
5:16 wtf
5:20.
Nishh true 😂😂😂
I was expecting someone saying something like: "It's not that difficult! I mastered it in two days! You just have to practice at least 40 hours every day!"
Star BonJr
That. That was the joke.
Kàtmakil 1912 is Ling Ling a pianist? :0
+Paco Paco TWOSETVIOLIN
Absolutely brilliant!! Just so much passion and energy.
Outstanding interpretation!! I felt every bit of the piece!
Love Chopin and your performance as well by the way! Thank you!
Your heart is so warm, Paul, expressed through those fingers of yours so effortlessly. The Cantabile (Swan Song) section was marvelous. Your pedal use made the piece so much more evidently clear, kudos! Love all of your videos. I sure wish you could find a fellow Tuba musician with whom to perform the "Effie Suite" by Alec Wilder... in front of one of your prized Elephant creatures, there in the wild. Cheers from NYC!
Ah, such a romantic piece. Truly the epitome of Chopin's finest piano pieces
Best version ive ever heard
This is the best piano music . I just love it.every time i listen to it, it just proves how great chopin is . Over all ,this is the best.
I love the sound of your piano
Imposter!
Thankyou for the beautiful performance .I play myself badly. Now l have to learn from you love lucia
I wonder how long it would take Mozart to be able to play this piece, I say about 5 hours of practice
C7 Z Liszt could probably sightread it lol
Hyoseon Lee have you learned this piece? I can only play the first few measures and the middle section after 2 months
C7 Z this is easy
Ludwig Van Beethoven no its not, all of Chopin's music are really difficult because of Chopin's style in general. With his music, playing by the score is taboo, you gotta put feeling into the entire thing.
Ludwig Van Beethoven ha easy for a virtuoso but to be able to play it like Paul so brilliantly, na it's not easy.
I can't belive it both chopin for creating a masterpiece and you sir for sharing these notes he discovered in nature
I'll learn this one tomorrow. Today I'm strugling with C major scale...
This is just fantastic. Wow, mind-blowing. I wonder how many times he had to shoot that to get it perfect like that. I wish I could just play 20 seconds of this beautiful piece. Magnificent. One of the best versions yet.
BRAVO! BRAVO!! BRAVO!!!
Chopin to najpiękniejsza spuścizna dla ludzkości ❤️
you are not normal man o.O you're amazing and great, thank you very much :D
Wonderful as always, Paul.
Herrlich!
XylazineHCl alles klar ein deutscher hier
Paul Barton: the king of dynamics.
3:32 was so sudden, it was like he just shifted back into maximum overdrive
imagine the hours of practice for this song. You need to remember all the notes one by one and of course a muscle memory for the exact place at the exact time. Amazing
Jamais un morceau n'avait aussi bien porté son nom car il relève de la fantaisie
When I watch your videos I refuse to skip ads cause I like it that much
Absolutamente genial!
Ezequiel Gomares English translation = absolute bollocks
Every time.i watch this video. I am flawed. not may people can play this in a way that captivates. So inspiring. I started only 2 and a half months ago at 25. I hope to be able to play like you one day xx
+Paul Barton Thank you so much for uploading these pieces! I'm just starting to play the Piano and your videos are helping me a lot. That's why I ask...
Can you please answer a question for me?
I'm doing a monograph about Music, and I would really like to know:
What have you learned throughout all these years studying Music and, specially, by playing it? Have your life improved somehow?
+Lucas de Carvalho What have you learned throughout all these years studying Music?
… I've learned how little I know and how much there is to learn.
by playing it? Have your life improved somehow?
… yes.
can't believe that one of the best pianist in youtube has only 175k subscribers
magnifique....
I like that you played the main theme with a lot of dry sections, dry as in with no use of sustain pedal, brings out the nuances!
Play “La Campanella”.Frank Listz
Frank ?! :D
@@kikfred Listz? :D
@@kikfred ahahahahahhahaha
Paul, thank you for your amazing station! I just discovered you a few weeks ago. I love your interpretations and beautiful transparency of showing what you're doing on the keyboard. The sound quality is also just incredible. I am a pianist myself and run a studio. I'm sending my kids links of your playing to help them understand what great playing looks and sounds like. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent!!
-Elaine
I can't even hit the keys aimlessly that fast 🤣
Thank you for sharing this beautiful song Paul. Take care.
Which is harder. This or the revolutionary Etude?
Reborn NightMare revolutionary etude
LOL revolutionary waaaaaaaaaaaay harder
This one by a little. I've played both pieces and the polyrhythm in this one is no joke.
I think this one is harder - my opinion - didn’t take me long to learn revolutionary
NeroNeko whAt
This is so unbelievably beautiful....wow I cannot put into words.
...holy crap
Outstanding. Use of pedal allows for a crisper sound which I love.
Random fact: in Korean they say “I hit the piano” instead of “I play the piano”, for example they say 피아노(piano)를(object marker) 져요(to Hit)(formal form) instead of
피아노를해요 which would mean to do or play the piano. Idk why I just thought of this and wasted 2 minutes of my life ;-; ..... :|
you're pressing a button to hit a string with a hammer which makes a noise. makes sense.
Anthony Dipasquale ikd I was bored, wasn’t a show of my knowledge just a random fact. You really took the time out of your day to comment that instead of ignoring and enjoying your day ;)
Anthony Dipasquale I enjoyed the video as-well and I see what you mean my comment is irrelevant. There was no point of making it
Anthony Dipasquale the one with Clair de lune I think. Love the piece
What a beautiful piano and technique! I love how you play!! Sounds absolutely stunning.
00:05
Paul, I could listen to you play all day!
