Wow! I had the nineteen nineties version of this. My little robot accompanied me through some of the worst and best moments of my life. He was at my bedside when I woke up from heart surgery as a teenager and sitting on the headboard of my bed as I left him and went off to college. I hope whoever bought him is enjoying him as much as we enjoyed ours.
This robot was my favorite toy when I was 6-9 years old. I think that and my Speak & Spell were my only companions when I had to spend weekends at my grandparents' house in the 80s. Wow. I was such a geek.
I got this for Christmas in 1978. It was my favorite toy for years! I think I had about 12 different 8-tracks. The one on the Metric System was fun - back at that time, they were telling all school kids that we were all going metric by 1990. It seemed so far off in the future.
When I was a child (in the mid 90s) I wanted the version that was available back then but my parents couldn't afford to buy me one. They found this model at a flea market and it worked perfectly fine!!! I had a blast with it!!
I remember one day I purposely answered all the questions wrong in a category and the robot spoke negative. I mean it literally belittled me...🤣. Though I was young I recall thinking that the toy was *programmed* to do that. And since it was, meant that a kid that *didn't* get those questions correct because they truly didn't know,, would be made to feel stupid. *TRUE STORY*
One of my cousins originally had this and I remember using it all the time when I was at my aunt's house. I remember there being one about characters from stories and one about monster movies
My grandparents would pick up random batches of 8-tracks at various garage sales, and the tape with interviews with Lilian Wald, and Thomas Edison were on it. I only found out that this was a robot toy in 1998 while looking around on the web.
The reason I love the old Misfits is my rich aunts kids had this and the trivia "tape" about 50's movies. I was 10 then 3 years later heard them. Loved them since 1984.
It wasn't until looking 2-XL up on the internet I learned of this previous version. I got the one that was released in 1992 by Tiger which had a different design and used regular cassette tapes, but split them up into 4 separate tracks as well as they were used as one-sided tapes with all 4 audio channels. He had the same voice as this one - voiced by Dr. Michael Freeman, who was the inventor of 2-XL - it is his voice altered to sound higher pitched. There are some programs where he appears in his natural voice when 2-XL is supposedly doing something wrong - he calls 2-XL to tell him what he is doing wrong: "2-XL, this is your inventor..."
When I was a kid, 2-XL was my homie. I had the 90's updated version that played the cassette tapes and LOVED replaying the tapes and answering the questions over and over again! I never had the original 70's model, but always thought it was very cool, too! Thanks for sharing this video!
I had the 90s version of this that ran on 4-channel cassette tapes I mostly used it for the adventure stories. This thing was literally awesome to me! If I still had to excel I use it every single day thank you for posting the video. I think I literally wore out three of them.
Got this is a hand-me-down from a neighbor kid around 1984. On one of the 8 tracks it asked me if I was a boy or a girl and I hit the third option. It scared the shit out of me because I thought I was misbehaving.
this robot's voice actually sounds like another fellow robot, DJ R-3X (formerly RX-24) found in oga's cantina at star wars galaxy's edge in both disneyland and disney world
whoaaaa! Had one 😍 when i was 5years old i was scared to play this. 😥 im already 25years old now and this toy was hide on our antique Cabinet 😁 the tape was already broken haha.
This is crazy - I was just reminded of this when I was watching Argo earlier today and saw it in the background. I haven't thought about this in DECADES. Wow!
I remember one time... only once, there was some kind of tape error or something that kinda sounded like a fart... and wouldn't you know it 2-XL said, in that 2-XL voice, "Oh, excuse me..." I thought this was the funniest thing I'd ever heard at the time (I was about 8 years old) Nonetheless, one of my favorite toys as a kid, and as a teenager 2-XL kicked out the jams from the old 8-tracks I had kicking around
My younger sister had this version of 2XL, which was such a great educational toy. We had so much fun learning from this robot. That voice of 2XL was absolutely perfect. For some reason I always remembered what 2XL said. Perhaps it was that super clear voice of the robot that just made me remember the information very well. Once in a while we would just press the wrong button to hear what the robot had to tell us. There should be a 2XL website where today’s young children can have fun learning with this wonderful and charming robot. It would be great if 2XL got another reboot with new learning material, and the exact same voice, but now the robot would be able to move around and have all kinds of cool functions like a droid from Star Wars.
I had the compact cassette version of this toy in the 90s. I prefer the older 2XL voice over the new one its more cartoony. Plus the one you have looks like it was pulled right out of Lost in Space, whereas the 90s version looks like the bastard child of the maid from the Jetsons and Johnny 5.
Hi, Databits! Would you mind telling me what tape this song came from? I have one of these guys now and I am on a quest to collect as many of the tapes as I can find. Thanks for posting this!
@@databits Thanks. I just recently got the original version of general information. I will have to check it out. There are two different versions of general information. One was recorded in 1978, and the other was recorded in 1980. The labels are identical. The revised version has the same copyright date as the original general information of 1978. The only way to tell them apart is by listening to them. Some of the questions are changed and 2XL says different things in the introduction.
I was born in 1977, and I remember finding my parent's 2-XL in the mid 1980's in some long lost area of the house just getting dusty. I think I only found 1 or 2 tapes that survived past 1978, but even then, the power adapter was long lost. So this is the first time I've ever actually seen 2-XL play a tape. It's kinda wild.
i guess im not the only one here that had one of these as a kid...i had the "funny facts and world records" 8 track...seems so silly now. but i loved it at the time,i was 11. 3:42
I don't know why, but this thing reminds me a lot of Claptrap from the Borderlands series of video games. He even has the same comedic tone and dialog as Claptrap does.
I had one and am trying to find out the name of a story on the bedtime cassette about a little girl. I think her name is Alexis. Does anyone know the name of the story?
Hello friend , sorry to bother you , but I have one just like I lost the charger. Please tell me which of voltage and current has eliminator your 2XL . Thank you and congratulations for having one so careful . Cheers !!!!!
I Have The Guinness book of world records Tape I just found out tonight that it was for this toy when I got it in a box of 8 track tapes this summer I thought it was an audio book version of an old Guinness world records publication
I had the original version which his eyes didn't flash and had to exchange it because it had bad 8 track. I had the game that mounted on his ears. Nice...
Could you do a video on LeapFrog's My Pal Scout? He's a green stuffed dog that can learn your name, favourite food, colour and animal, and play music and stuff via being hooked up to a computer. Pretty easy to find in thrift stores and there's also a purple female version called Violet. I'd like to see how the software works.
That's funny you mention LeapFrog! I just found a children's Android tablet by LeapFrog. I'm really impressed at how much fun it is! I'll watch for a My Pal Scout!
My cousin had the newer 2-XL that used regular tapes. he ended up giving it to me and I played music tapes on him. I found a hidden fast forward button which allowed my 2-XL to be a regular tape player. I'm not sure what happened to him.

I had one too, and it had the thing on the front that had some chips or token you put in that pushed the buttons

Hey I had the speak & spell original version which had raised buttons. Loved my 2xl too.
@@m.m.radiochannel1969 I had the same
I got one in 78 when I was 6...it was a Christmas present... loves it... never got more cassettes though

I Had a Really Nice one too , I remember all those tapes , Question , The Billy Jean King Tennis one , Moon Landing , Hours of fun , and a Player too
Wonderful toy. I am a college professor and wheelchair user. I regularly amuse experts, by saying I am the smartest toy adjunct in the world
Haha!
@@databits it was a magical robot. Maybe you can do all the versions one day.. I finally have my channel under Michael Marry or search channel 69

You must be a genius! You are correct! Very good work!
And you have never heard KISS until you have heard them played on a 2-XL! lol
+TheHulkMadSmash LOL yes! Kiss on a 2XL, nice. Complete with Mouth light.

Dude!! I'm so sorry! This video was a "test" to see if there was any interest in the toy. I'm thinking about making a follow up video.
2XL was revamped in the 80s to work with cassette tapes.
Could you use it as a normal 8 track player?
yes
I had the original version which his eyes didn't flash and had to exchange it because it had bad 8 track. I had the game that mounted on his ears. Nice...
The original 2xl was made by mego Corp. Tiger built later versions that used cassette tapes.

Very 1978 sounding music but still cool.

coondogtheman1234 that one sucked.
Listen to the 2XL intro song and then Listen to the Moody Blues "Your Wildest Dreams." It seems there are musical cues lifted from 2XL.?
My cousin had one of these! If you answered too much stuff wrong on purpose he would scold you for using him incorrectly.
The neighbor kids had 2XL we had tons of fun in the 80s
But unfortunately he isn't smart. Pre-recorded 8 track tapes
You just ruined my childhood. Ugh!
