How Sleep Studies Work

- Sleep studies can be a big intimidating - but they're important in helping doctors figure out if you have a sleep disorder. So Jane Monzures is trying one out herself to learn why you shouldn't be worried.

I did this few years ago. They tell you to sleep normal. Besides all the wires, they watch you on inferred camera, listen to talk and breathe, and your in a strange bed. Your biggest fear is you might FART.
lmfao! you WILL fart = P, and so will the monitors!! x D
@@oopalonga my Medicare wouldn't expect the sleep study but they did the EEG man was pain having wires I couldn't sleep
Lol the fart part got me rolling 😂
LMFAOOOOOOOOO
First time they lied said no camera. Second time of I can't see you under the blankets!! What!! You told me no cameras!! So mad hate to be lied to!!! Hate it!!
I got this done twice already. And let just tell you that she isn't wearing all of the wires that they actually use. They use 16 of them, at least. About 11 of those go on your head. Top, sides, back and forehead, chin, temples, throat. They use a special glue so the wires stick to your scalp while you move around in your sleep. They do stay on, even if you rub your head on a pillow or whatever, I mean you will rip your hair off if you try to pull them off just like that. Of course, you end up having to wash your head at least twice to get it all completely off. They also place wires nearly inside your nostrils, they are not needles just wires that are monitoring your breathing. Another wire monitors your breathing through your mouth and that wire is shaped like a hook facing your mouth. They place a heart monitor, with a light that blinks all throughout the night, a belt, similar to the one the lady was wearing. By the time they are done setting you up you literally look like a cyborg from a movie that is under repairs. You even have to sleep with the device where the wires are attached to (a small electronic panel), which in turn connects to their another device next to your bed which is connected to their computers. So if you need to use the restroom they simply disconnect that part and you can take it with you to the restroom hanging from your neck. It is about oh...2 lbs. So going to pee or poop is an additional challenge alone. Imagine trying to take a shit with all that, well, shit, on you? Yeah. Not fun. And you can't get anything wet. So now that you're all set, you try to sleep but before that they check to see if all of the wires are transmitting the data, they talk to you with the lights off through a speaker in the room and ask you to move your feet, eyes and mouth and such. By the way they have a camera with night vision recording you all throughout the night, yep a stranger will watch you sleep and they can see and hear everything, even if you fart (the facility I was in had sound activated intercoms) Fun right? : ) Yeah...you definitely have to disconnect from reality to catch any sleep and complete the test. Then if you meet the "criteria" after about two hours of sleeping with all that stuff, then that same technician walks into your room, turns on the damn lights and wake you up and then they switch you to the actual sleep apnea machine. So now you have all those wires, the panel and now the air pressurized mask on. Sound fun right!? No. I was there for 10 hours, 2 hours for paperwork, personal hygiene, putting on all the wires, making the room comfortable, etc., etc., then about 2 hours of trying to fall asleep, when I finally did 2 hours later I was awaken by the technician telling me I had met the criteria and I was now ready to add the sleep apnea machine to the sleep study. You're gonna be half sleep and not happy during all this. So now 1 more hour of trying to fall sleep with everything on (except the wires near your nostrils and mouth) like a fucking cocoon made out of wires and tubing. Finally, I fell sleep and got awaken about three hours later and was told I had given them enough data. Done. I woke up feeling like I wanted to punch somebody in the face and then throw myself out a window and cry on the way down and hoped I exploded once I landed on the pavement. No, it wasn't that horrible but it was bad. So mentally prepare yourself. Bring extremely, E X T R E M E L Y, comfortable sleeping ware, (do not, do not come with new sleeping ware you haven't slept with before!) if you're like me who needs to hear something to fall sleep then bring a fan, I turn it on high and the air sound soothes me. I wouldn't have been able to do this without it, but everybody is different. I drove myself back home and ya, it was tough, very early in the morning, still a little dark, I had to drive carefully, I felt drunk more or less. So if possible have somebody drop you off and then drive you back home. Take a nice poop before checking in. I highly advice you do this or it's going to be a bad experience. Anyway I think I wrote plenty. I probably left out a few details here and there but overall, my best advice is to mentally prepare, learn to zone out of reality and practice at home focusing on a dream world, a peaceful place in your mind. So come prepared! You will thank me so much. Eat well that day, take your meds if you do, bring them with you just in case, bring comfortable clothing (so so important, it is critical), water (they do give you water there but just in case bring some too), simple snacks if you need them (simple snacks dont go buy a fucking hamburger and eat it there). They won't let you anyway. And have a good bowel movement at home before if possible. So is it all worth it???? YES. 100%. This study will improve your life. I promise. Good sleep is beyond important in anybody's life. And these studies help so much. OK I'm out. HAVE FUN!
I freaking laughed so hard. I tried not to wake hubby. I love this.!! Now I feel I am ready and have enough info. I will read till I fall asleep or listen to soothing music. I will pray I don't have to pee lol. Great info!! I'm a light sleeper , so I'm worried about waking up and issues falling back to sleep. I might have to work hard that day lol.
The best comment/information everrrrrrrrr! 😆😆 thank you for this. Now I know what I have expect on my sleep study.
I forgot and had a Coke at like 4;30 pm, with lunch. Could not sleep. Can home and slept all day. I don't know if they got enough data. I think I slept a little.
@@ZAMSKY1000 are you serious? I have literally had 3 red bulls right before bed and fall asleep immediately. I can drink coffee all day and not feel any different. Pisces me off
You’re the best commentator ever !!!!!
I’m not going to sleep with all that stuff on me.
Spiritual Peace same 😂
@Drop Squad Instructor If you're getting a sleep study done in the first place, chances are pretty big that they have trouble sleeping lol. All the wires in attached to you, the worry about ripping them out, anxiety about not being able to fall asleep when you know this is your one shot at getting answers etc... Someone not being able to sleep is not "being a baby", what the hell are you on about? In fact, I'd gladly pass out from pain every night if it meant I could ACTUALLY sleep well.
hey ,if anyone else is searching for can breathe right strips help sleep apnea? try Mackorny Blow Apnea Blueprint (should be on google have a look )? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for getting rid of sleep apnea without the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate after a lifetime of fighting got great results with it.
Im move around too much in my sleep to use all this stuff. All those cords will off by time i even get to sleep! Home study for me!
There’s actually several more that go on your head to measure your brain waves which can actually tell us what stage of sleep your in
Imthesaneway idibtevengofir2weejsabdmy anxiety is already acting up
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I had a sleep study done and apparently my heart rate spikes to 255 in my sleep which is why I wake up all the time
How can someone sleep with this on.
U cant
Shawn Hinton most common question
I have sleep apnea but, I can't tolerate my mask anymore. I am a nervous wreck after a couple of yrs of med procedures. Two shoulder replacements and one total knee replacement,CKD3 (down from 3 to 2). I also have Parkinson's and Rheumatoid Arthritis and, one more knee to be replaced. I sleep, maybe 2 hrs a night and fortunately, my heart is in tiptop shape. *** The answer to your question is, the experts make you comfortable and if you can't sleep????? I'm going back.
You end up sleeping anyway just had the test yesterday
I've had a study and declared to have apnea, prescribed a CPAP and loved it but, a few yrs later I had my shoulders replaced and one knee replaced AND, now I can't handle the mask. I have terrible insomnia and I'm miserable SO, I'm going back. I pray they can help. *I have CKD and can't take NSAIDS. Also, thru-out the yrs I have quit smoking, drinking and, gladly got off the OPIOIDS. Plus, I have RA. *****Getting old is not for beginners! For any who wonder (like me), the test is a great thing.
I am having one tonight. Glad to know nothing will hurt.
My sister is doing a sleep study tonight I think I'm going to schedule one for myself soon.
So I might be going in for overnight sleep study I was just wondering if there is sometimes a nurse or two in the sleep lab because I have a feeding tube and I can't see well enough to set up my night-time feeds and pick myself up to my pump and do the water flushing and everything
Anthony Stone it depends on where you have your study done; independent sleep labs typically only have technologists on staff during the night and they would most likely not be adequately trained to handle your feeding tube. A hospital based lab however would have nursing staff available all through the night to assist you in that capacity. Make sure wherever you are referred for a sleep study that you confirm when scheduling that you have this specific need so that you won’t run into any issues during your study. Good luck!
i wake up to piss about 4 times a night. how the fuck imma do that while these wires are strapped to me?
The comment I was looking for 😂
Once you treat your apnea you'll sleep through the night.
@@cebruthius i had a sleep study done, no apnea present :(. it's all in my fuckin head--would rather sleep apnea than psychological-induced insomnia =/
@@oopalonga You could have UARS, it's very hard to find a doctor who actually knows about it and can recognize it. It took me 3 years to get it diagnosed. I was a total zombie. Chronic pain, insomnia.
@@cebruthius thx--if i don't drink water before bed them i'm usually good, especially coupled w/ 10mg cannabis.
wouldn't UARS show up though during a sleep study?
I toss and turn so much i would be strangling myself with all those wires attached to me.
Just had a sleep study done. They never put a mask on me all night. I have central and obstructive sleep apnea and am on a bipap machine for many years. Will get results in 4 days. Just wanted to know why no mask was put on me. thanks
If you can't sleep the way you are comfortable then What's the point
I hope they understand anxiety disorders bc im incredibly scared i wont sleep! 😢
Hi, could you state a update on how your visit turned out?
How can you use bathroom while all wired up? 😢
I tried to fall asleep with only 3 of those things on for the home study. Here I am in the morning.... And I slept horribly
so what happens if results say you don't have a sleep abnormality?
Thanks for the video and info
im getting one tonight wish me luck
Hey, how did it go?
@@QuintTheSharker This was awhile ago so I dont remember all but its was alright very hard to fall asleep but overall not painful or anything its just kind of uncomfortable to sleep
@@coltonbuxton6853 thanks for the reply. Was it worth having done?
How many time do we do it is it just one time
I had mine in 2011
Worst experience of my life
I have to go get a sleep study done. I am apprehensive, and I know as the days get closer to that time my anxiety will go through the roof. Not looking forward to this.
None of that would still be attached in the morning 😂.
Trust me they are
Not the way I sleep, and I sleep great
What if the doctors don’t get a clear understanding of what’s going on with me ? Like do I have to repeat the test until they do or is there further test to be done ? Test like this but more in depth ? Idk 🤷♀️ just curious
Did you ever get the sleep study done? Was also wondering what happens if it doesn't work the first time around.
@@TeslaEmperor yes i had the test done but i didnt slept at all that night , and my insurance wouldnt allowed another test done
@@juliaellis8510 or your insurance maybe only allowes a sleep study test once per year?
At least everyone has a lot of makeup on before getting the sleep study
if you are getting a sleep study can you take a sleeping pill? if you cant fall asleep?
Yes. Take prescriptions as prescribed unless your doctor tells you otherwise
Can you take an over the counter sleeping pill? Like Advil PM? I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep with all that on plus being in someone else’s bed
@@ebo5236 Yeah what if it takes forever to fall asleep
From my understanding taking a sleep medication is stated in medical studies to not induce natural sleep. You should come in exhausted. You only have to do it for one day.
@@ebo5236 like you never woke up in somebody else's bed?! 🤣👏👏👏
I dont sleep well alone. Could I bring a snuggle buddy?
that's what this doctor is for ; )
oopalonga but what if the doctor you get is a dude?
I'm getting wired tonight. I have sleep problems and twitches
I've gotta do a study later this month and the way I usually fall asleep is with hot blondes like in this video. 🤔
My grandma used to be a sleep tech
Did she ever see any crazy stuff?
Holy cable management, Batman!
Can they see if you’ve vaped or smoke marijuana
LOL no. This isn't a drug test. It won't tell you anything about that :P
They cant see that but they might see irregular breathing patterns and might ask you if you have, be honest with them because you dont want to be treated for something you dont have
Sleep studies also monitor your brainwave activity, and marijuana use can affect your waveform so it may be possible if there’s a before vs after situation for comparison. Other drugs are very obvious during a sleep study, like benzos and opioids.
Use of a vape can’t be detected during a sleep study. Unless you’re using one during the study, in which case the technologist can probably see you using it on camera.
🤦♂️
Anyone else hoping they had a pillow fight that ended in a make-out session? Asking for a friend.
Yes!
awesome voice, also doctor is standing TOO close.
Not sure if we really needed push up cleavage in a sleep study video but thanks for your effort.
Deplor AbleDixie some people want to know what to expect.
@@awakeningmatters1111 i only slept 3 hrs with all the wires on but they said it was enough

i'm here for the cleavage, what was the video even about?
Ew???
The doctor has that college valley girl talk.
Very pretty women!
i love the female doctor she looks like my ex
I did my sleep study stuff took forever to fall asleep and the lady monitoring me knew I was faking I only slept for like 2 hours
Did u pass ?
@@JustTheFacts317 Yeah I guess so but they actually know if you're sleeping if I was u get a pill and its hard to use the bathroom so watchout if you drink too much water
@@firstname8262 thanks im doing the home sleep test tonight and was wondering what determines if u hdve sleep apnea or not ? Would staying up the whole test be a fail ? Cant imagine getting much sleep with that stuff on me ...
Just The Facts Yeah that stuff was annoying and a struggle but you’ll eventually fall asleep. As long as you get some sleep you pass but if you stay up all night then fail
I get my one two weeks time. they will teach Me how to hook it up and I can take the machine home with me then I need to return it the next day. I do not need to sleep at a hospital or clinic
I just did my sleep study last night and I had triple that number of wires most of which were attached to my scalp to collect brain wave patterns. Each lead attached to my body was adhered with a viscous sticky "glue" and covered with a piece of tape to hold it in place. I have long hair, so my hair was sticking up all over like a rat's nest when they were all removed. I also had two nasal cannulas, one to monitor my nasal breathing in and one to monitor breathing out. Like Jane, I also had the oxygen monitor on my finger.
I had so much anxiety about even going but I forced myself to do it since I struggle to sleep.
It was overall worth it to do it. The room was nice, the medical staff assisting were very friendly and professional.
The only cons were that it made it difficult to sleep since I sleep on my sides and toss and turn all night. You cannot comfortably do that when you have so many wires attached to your head and body and finger, and the wires aren't long enough to allow that movement. I had to sleep on my back for the most part because I didn't want to ruin the study by pulling off a wire lead or pulling the wire out of the machine that was recording the data.
The second con is the goo left on your body and in your hair. You definitely need to shower with hot water and shampoo/soap to get it off. It isn't hard. Just plan on getting a shower there before you leave, bringing with you any of your grooming products you need. I simply went home to shower and the went to bed to get some much needed sleep.
I am glad I followed thru and got this sleep study done. I am awaiting the results of the study and hope for some answers.
But there is simple no way it can be accurate. As you said yourself you were unable to sleep as you normally do. If you are like me you were somewhere between sleep and awake the whole night. Not exactly asleep, but not awake either. There is no way I reached REM sleep at any point during that hell. And I doubt you did either.
There are wires connected to the scalp. If you have really long hair beware! I have washed my hair 4 times and that crappy "ten 20 paste" is in my hair and my head has been soo itchy. Freaking out I'm gonna have bald patches.
My hair is bleached and was healthy and very long. I'm really upset i was not told upfront what to expect.
I have to have one but my real problem is that I never can fall asleep without meds. So what's the point? I hate living like this. It makes no sense 😕 😐 😑
BS!
Nothing hurts not at all is false. It does hurt taking all the bandages off
Who the heck wears their makeup to bed? Red lipstick? Give me a break. This lady isn't coming in at 2 a.m. drunk from a night out. Be realistic in your depictions!
I have to get this done in 2 days it’s soo annoying mostly sleep I can’t even sleep well as it is at my home at hospital I’ve done it before and lights are off at 9 and I didn’t get to proper sleep until 11:30
I’m worried I might rip one in my sleep.
She was definitely NOT having a sleep study done. None of the head wires were hooked up so there was zero chance of seeing her brain activity. They should've shown what it looks like all wired up nice and neat. The wires aren't in the way.
Nice
