The portrait tracing video from a few months ago (ruclips.net/video/w9XIKKVXw-A/видео.html) was one of my most requested tutorials since starting the channel. So after almost 2 years of avoiding the whole thing, I finally decided to bite the bullet and do a tracing video. Do I believe you can actually learn how to draw by tracing? Absolutely not! But it turns out that the portrait tutorial has been a great way to get people to dip their toes into the world of digital art and to show them that they can do it. I've had comments from people who started with my other tracing video and, within a few days, realized they really like drawing. From there, they moved on to "from scratch" tutorials, which is AWESOME! So if someone is reading this and feeling bad about tracing, just remember that no, you won't learn to draw by tracing. But it might still be a great way to discover a new hobby! Plus, we're on RUclips; we're all about having fun here. So it's ok to just switch our brain off for a while 🤍 That being said, please keep in mind that tracing a picture you don't own is stealing, so make sure to work either on a picture you/someone you know took or a copyright-free picture. Also, advertising a traced image as an original illustration is questionable. Plus, people can tell 😉 If you're someone who doesn't like tracing their art, then good for you! I'm the same. But that doesn't mean we get to attack people who just want a good time.
I agree with your stance on tracing. In fact, tracing helped me get used to the motions and helped build my confidence when I was an absolute beginner (and terrible at art but desperately wanted to improve my skills in private.) I went from tracing (and never posting the tracing anywhere even if it was my original content,) to closely trying to mimic things, to original concepts. I'm still very much on the beginner side of intermediate, but allowing myself to 'cheat' is what helped me start my journey to begin with. I feel like tracing is like training wheels on a bike. You're going to have to take them off eventually, but if you are terrified to ride in the first place the wheels are going to help you get through that first step. I super appreciate your content, especially since switching to Procreate has been such a jarring change for me. But your videos are helping me build my foundation and I am already feeling so much more confident 💖
Hi Genevieve! First I want to say that your tutorials are awesome, then I would like to see if you can do more of a color variation. Or perhaps a cat with 3 colors? And blending colors.. idk if I’m making myself clear 😂😂😂 but you know. Thanksss again!!
Doing this for our pup, Kiowa. I'm handmaking a Pokemon card using this drawing for my husband for Christmas. He's loves this dog more than life (and sometimes me lol), and I can't wait until he opens it! Would love a tutorial on this for a pet with multiple colors :)
All your tutorials are great (also just to watch and destress without drawing) but this one made me SO happy! I have a Samojed my self, named Sirius, and have been wondering how best to draw a white dog. Once I get an Ipad, I'm definitely going to try to draw him following along with this tutorial ❤️
Ahwooo! Waffle is adorable 💜🐶 I've been trying to figure out how to draw all the pets in my household-- Yahtzee (black lab), Monkey (orange cat), Loki (greyish brownish cat), and Lucy (multicolor dog) -- so this is super useful. I'm never quite sure how much detail to put in, but this at least gives me somewhere to start.
We just lost our dog. And I was trying to figure out how to make him "cartoony" and put him on a shirt, or as a sticker top my laptop/tablet. Thank you for this.
Hoki, Jango and Betty.. Thank you for the tutorial.. i just learning how to draw digitally and i want to draw my babies.. especially Hoki.. my white FurBaby.. thank you💓💓
A great tutorial as always! I had to take a little break from drawing but this seems like the best tutorial to get back at it. I'll be drawing my cat and her name is Shifu
My Kittys names are Loki, Cathy & Mailo and the doggo is called Dice ❤️🔥 Love your tutorials, these are soooo helpful, thank you so much for explaining things so well ❣️
Perfect Video for me! I am dreaming about drawing my dog(Samoyed) some Illustration from myself. now I have lots of idea how to draw a white dog:)))) Thanks!!
I love them too so and cannot wait to try following your tutorial which is amazing thank you so much I love your work. My two Samoyeds are Kulani and Kouki
I this is a great tutorial I mean it’s finally the weekend I mean I can’t keep up with all the tutorials cause school has kept me busy not to mention I have more then one teacher it’s kinda scary for me and all of my teachers are mean especially my math teacher but I’m finally gonna do this imma draw a axolotl that I saw on Pinterest I hope you see this and your new puppy is so cute and such a cute name “waffle” so cute I love you Genevieve have a good weekend!
School can be a lot for sure 🤍 I remember feeling the same when I transitioned to having one teacher to multiple classrooms and groups. It was super overwhelming at first but you really do get in a groove pretty quickly. You got this!
Could you teach me why you started off with a black outline and then you did the alpha lock and made it lighter. How come you didn't make the line art layer with that final color, to begin with. I don't believe you taught that, and I was very curious.
I believe she did that because she used a darker shade of the color for each object to re-color the line art. It would be hard to do that in the beginning unless you were very certain about your color palette.
Hi Diya! I'm launching my "Illustration from scratch" courses in a few weeks 😊 If you go and grab the freebies in the video description (or here: genevievesdesignstudio.com/leaves ), you'll automatically be added to be notified when the course goes live 🤍
At 30:35 (and elsewhere in the video) you instruct to place layers in a certain order, e.g. you say to put the shadow layer above any colour layers but below the line art. Why? Thank you.
The layer list is a bit like a pile of transparent pieces of paper, with the top of the list being the top of the pile. By putting the shadow layer above color layers and using a blending mode, the shadows are going to be applied to your entire piece. In this case though, I wanted to keep the line art untouched, so putting the layer above the shadows meant it would not be affected 😊
hello, I have been using this video to continue to characterize my pets and friends pets. I am running into a problem with my line art layer. It changes color and is no longer black after the colorization page. I have managed to have the color change with Every project…..what am I doing wrong? Thank you!

I like that Waffle is completely white for this tutorial. I'd also love a realistic drawing of him. One color animals are intimidating to draw

Waffle is an adorable puppy and an adorable name! What made you think of waffle for a name?
Not 100% sure! I just thought it was a good fit and it also kind of sounds like the French word we use to imitate barking, "wouf" 😊
