i love this game cause you have Layton and Luke who've seen shit like this before (robots, hypnotism/seeing things differently, the incurable illness thing was sorta a part of Eternal Diva (the movie, highly recommend it)) and while Luke's still shocked, Layton's relatively unfazed by it at this point
and then there's Phoenix and Maya who's most wild adventures (at that point) were due to spirit mediums

      Mostly Maya

There's also the fact that Layton mysteries tend to run on Scooby Doo logic, whatever supernatural premise is proposed is always false (except Luke talks to animals somehow)
Phoenix and Maya have experienced the magic of spirit mediums, so there being an actual witch seems at least a little more plausible from the Ace Attorney standpoint

18:29 Wait did they just make two golden statues just in case Phoenix was the one to get caught in the Goldor spell or something?
Also the "Incurable illness" thing probably comes from Apollo Justice with its cleverly-named "Incuritis"

The reason Barnham left Labyrinthia was because he heard "just say you're gay and go" and assumed you meant him

There are people who are questioning what the fawk is going on.
There are people who are questioning the plotholes
There are people who have already seen all of this before and just take it.
And, there are people who went through all of the above, *in that order.*

I literally finished this game for the first time a week ago, and oh my goodness gracious it was a wild ride.
Honestly, the incurable disease thing (if I had to tie it to another Layton game) would be Miracle Mask, I guess?? Regardless, I love this reaction so much goodness gracious

I know I should have seen everything coming already since I’ve played this before, but Luke operating the machine/your reaction to that made me laugh so hard choked on the water I was drinking

Move along Milgram and Zimbardo, your experiments are pinnacles of ethical practice compared to this trainwreck. I'm sorry but the entire story just imploded at this point. It's the most convenient set of plot points ever and it STILL doesn't make sense. The portal spell is impossible to replicate no matter how many times you ring bells, and how quickly can they make a gold statue out of any random object that a witch suddenly decides to cast Goldor on, unless they can read minds? If a witch casts vanish on herself then Shades drape a blanket over her, and she herself doesn't notice? And that's putting aside the huge ethical issues like traumatising a 5-year-old to the point where she literally tries to kill herself, like WTF?
Honestly I've never experienced a plot twist that retroactively ruined my appreciation for a game so badly. The magic rules were perfectly consistent and believable as-is, they really should have reined in the Layton writers' obsession with absurd endings this one time. I'm glad you were able to laugh it off, 'cause I was just angry and dumbfounded the entire time.
