Wilmington Delaware Hoods - Murder Town SMALL BUT DANGEROUS

  • Today we are in Wilmington, Delaware which is the largest city in the state of Delaware. Like nearby Chester, Pennsylvania it was founded by the Swedes and is in fact the first Swedish settlement in North America.
    Wilmington is a small city, overshadowed by the Goliaths around it such as nearby Philadelphia and Baltimore but when there it has it's own big city feel. Today the city has a population of 70,000 down from it's peak of 112,000 in 1940. It's the same sad story with Wilmington as in most other American cities, by 1950 the population began to shrink as companies left for greener pastures elsewhere. However the city's population stabilized in 1980 and has stayed constant for 40 years....essentially being stagnant.
    25% of the population falls below the poverty line and crime has historically been an issue as the city consistently ranks as one of America's most dangerous cities. Today we drive around the city's most notorious neighborhoods to get a glimpse into daily life in Wilmington known locally as "Murder Town" .
    There was a lot to film so this is the part 1 of 2.

    This type of footage has become an urban trope along the northeast corridor. They all have a very similar look. Seems like such images help to define a long and complex post colonial history where so much potential for greatness continues to be unrealized.

    I grew up in the northern suburbs of Wilmington in the 1960s. I turned 9 the summer of 1968 and I remember the riots in the spring of 1968. We were playing basketball and could see the smoke rising up south of us as the fires raged. Governor Terry ordered in the National Guard. It was a mess. Terry lost his re-election bid and died shortly thereafter.

    • @jessebaldwin2661
      @jessebaldwin2661 8 месяцев назад +3

      I remember that too. I was in the National Guard in 1968 and was called in to patrol the streets with state police. We patrolled the streets in military jeeps carrying M16's. This of course was after Martin Luther King was assassinated and tensions were high among the black community for good reason.

    Compton Towne House Apartments!! We used to play football in the church yard! Bancroft Middle School, boys club, summer camp at the YMCA! Back in the day, the homies Marcus mom used to sell cups of frozen Kool aid and we would take it and eat from the bottom cuzz the flavor was there. I remember one time he hit his head on the brick wall of the church and couldn't remember who he was for a couple minutes. Damn back in the day! I went from Compton Village and some how ended up in Compton California. Destiny

      Well, from living in the hood, one of the many things I’ve learned, is that the people who will almost never get touched are the following: the Mormon guys who walk in pairs, the social worker, who is responsible for everybody, being recertified for their benefits, the probation or parole officer, going to see someone, and, of course, the warrant squad. And, of course, everybody seems to conveniently disappear off their steps once they know Jehovah’s Witness is about to show up.

      I saw a guy walking with his little girl. Most of these people are just like us; they have families and friends and just want to live in peace, habe bread on the table, and some money to afford themselves some sense of luxury or entertainment. The majority of crime in these areas is committed by a very small group of individuals.
      They just don’t have any opportunities. There are plenty of people who grew up in middle-class families and couldn’t cut it in today’s society.
      The struggle is indifferent to class; it’s just more pronounced at the bottom of the socio-economic strata.

    With a bulldozer presented at the beginning of the video and hashed these buildings, all boarded up, that only means that everything out there is going to get demolished in the years ahead, giving away to luxury apartments. and high priced condos. Enough to price all of these residents out of their homes to try and find somewhere else to live. in related news, I seemed bothered by the fact that there’s a bunch of one-way streets in an area whose streets are wide enough for two cars to go opposite ways.

    In all actuality this is pretty tame to some of the hoods in Tampa, FL. Sulpher springs and Robles park is a lot worse. You can’t even sit outside more than five minutes in sulpher springs without hearing gun shots. The caption made it seem like it was a lot worse than what it looks like.

    • @yell0wberry
      @yell0wberry 9 месяцев назад +10

      I wouldn’t be so fast as to compare hoods, the hood is the hood, regardless of what you see, and don’t see and regardless of what you hear and don’t hear. There are days when I can walk through Brownsville in Brooklyn, and then there are days where I wouldn’t go within half a mile of that place. I’ve been in just about every hood in this country, and while I would say, some places are probably a lot worse than others, I will say that every hood has one thing in common. For the most part, if you come through with a purpose and you don’t bother someone, Most likely, they won’t bother you unless you give them a really good reason to do so

    It is no more dangerous than any other city with the same problems with no resolution in place to begin change. There are always nicer neighborhoods where we all live that are not afflicted or plagued with the situations you are surrounded by. There is no perfect place to live you have to look for better neighborhoods within your city.

    All the money going into homeless services, Cooperative housing to revitalize existing housing stock, while creating more green spaces, Community Gardens. Obviously not a bank sector priority. While a few have unlimited credit to lose billions of dollars as a tax write-off, Financial expertise and advice is paid up front with financial gain for those creating the scheme to be followed by bankruptcy, and tax write-offs, money that was never theirs at all. Utility upgrades to furnaces of high-efficiency resulting in lower bills with volume discount pricing and apprenticeship education. Devastated not by annual hurricanes covered by insurance, old age has no coverage even though policies must be paid. Suburbia is heavily subsidized, endless freeways and Roads. The private-public Partnerships profiting a few Developers, should extend to every homeowner on this video, with grants to restore the affordable housing we already have, in need of love and financial support where is HUD? Something Marjorie Greene surely would oppose.
