    Your perspective is right on target. I volunteer as a scorer for the LPGA at a couple of tournaments and have also done the same for the PGA in the past. I have walked along with pros that are having a great round as well as those who are struggling. I think many times our expectations are set when watching the pros on TV. We only see the ones who are playing extremely well. You don't see those in the middle or bottom of the pack. If you did, you wouldn't be so hard on yourself. As Jen says, the more you have fun on the course, the more relaxed you'll be and you'll probably score better.

    • @GenevieveLingGolf

      100%. If I had a dime for every time somebody I have played with said "pros HAVE to make this" or in general, when somebody says that.. i would be RICH 😂

    Wow! A lot of great nuggets in this post. You are so correct. As golfers we put too much expectations on our game. I to remind my young golfer from time to time that is not our goal. I tell him, you learning and perfecting these particular skills is our goal. Winning will take care of itself.

    The first time I went to Asia in 2008 I was an 8 handicap hitting my driver very hard. The grass in Asia, especially the rough, taught me to throttle back and hit fairway. I was a member of a course with flatish greens and Asia taught me to focus in on one quarter of a green to leave an uphill putt. Also Asia taught me to putt. To examine a green in minute detail to read the line properly. Asia taught me to play golf. 30 months (and 2 trips) later I was a 5 handicap - 3 shots doesn't sound much but you know down at the sharp end of handicaps 3 shots is huge. I love Asia, I hope to travel there 3 times more before I retire and I will be heartbroken when I no longer can afford to go.

    Great advice from Gen. I am too often guilty of being mad about a bad shot and letting it affect my next shot, and I have to remind myself that when I turn pro (HA - as in never!) and start practicing for hours each day and playing more than once a week, THEN I can be mad for hitting a bad shot. And I don't remember if you asked it in this video or the part one video, but I agree with you about par threes - they are harder than par fours or fives. Most of the courses I play regularly, if it is a shorter par three (as in, 150 yards or less), the green is usually surrounded by bunkers or it is a really small green, and the long par threes will have larger greens but those greens have more undulation. I really enjoy your videos and enjoy the commentary so keep it up!

  • @JS-ub9mn
    @JS-ub9mn 4 года назад +1

    Gen, first of all -- almost 15K subscribers! You keep on growing--and you deserve it. I was playing today and thinking about why you said that you think par 5s are easier than par 3s, and here's what I concluded. When you are learning golf, and still mostly struggling, a par 3 seems easier because there are fewer chances for things to wrong. But when you are very experienced, a par 5 is more appealing because there are more chances for things to go great. It's just a difference in expectations and experience. I think the beginners are right, because of the difficulties they face, and I think the pros are right, because of the skills that they have.

  • @MPerski
    @MPerski 4 года назад

    Par-3's are definitely the hardest on the course.
    If you mishit a shot on a par-5, you can still make par.
    Mishit any shot on a par-3 and you're looking at bogie (no chance to recover).
    We have several par-3's over 200 yards on our course. 200 yard approach shots are tough!
    Your slo-mo shots are fine, and I love watching YOUR swing in slow motion.
    You have a great attitude, and are always smiling. Love that!
    Do you have the same demeanor in competition?
    I think I set realistic expectations, and I definitely play for fun (and my friends).
    I use Arccos and study my stats after the round. I'm ok with my yardages and gapping.
    The problem is fixing my weaknesses (I definitely need to work on my approach shots).
    Iron shots should be easier to hit. Right? 🤷🏼‍♂️
    I hit my woods & hybrids SO much better.
    You make golf look so easy. Seems like you almost never get into trouble.
    Seems I'm always hitting out of the trees, roll into a bunker, horrible lie in thick rough, bounce over the green, clip a branch, roll off the side of the green, have a nasty breaking putt, a nasty downhill lie with no green to work with, hitting off hardpan or a bunker with little or no sand, etc.I'm always in trouble.
    Yes, you hit more fairways and more greens 👏🏻 but, I am the king of bad bounces. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Also, I agree about course conditions. I feel much better about the chance of a lower score playing on a PGA/LPGA tour course than I do my local public course. Why? The conditions are better and more consistent.

Have to play 'winter rules' in the fairways as the course doesn't have enough money to water them. The greens do get watered and aren't in bad shape but definitely inconsistent as far as speed goes. When will your tour get started? Must be hard to focus with an indefinite start date.

I have never played on "cow grass" but I have played on Bermuda grass where the putt would curve uphill if the sunset was on that side of the green. Amazing a right to left sloping putt turning left to right because of the Bermuda grass growing towards the right. The fairways were nice to hit off as the grass supported the ball but the rough could be impossible. Is cow grass like that?

    💕 it! As an amateur I’ll say bogey is good, Par even better & birdies are bonus 😬 keep the slow mo for your IG. Perhaps playing vlog should be seamless content but myb if you are doing swing tips vid then the slow mo would be of better use. Just my two cent! Enjoyed watching you playing at KGPA my home course. Thanks a lot for that green&grain explanation. I keep going for that extravagant high flop but I guess a basic bump and run will do just fine. Play it safe is the best bet but I guess too much tv makes me go for that almost impossible shots... which I’ll make 1 out of 10 tries 😬 any chance to for a playing lesson with the pro soon? Forest nine myb?

    Great explanation of par 3s.
    OK, I'll confide. I guess where the game drives me nuts is I have broken 80 and most times I'm mid upper 80s. But my brain says, "why is my swing so rushed today when just the other day, I can't miss? Why can't my brain and body simply repeat what it did?" So when I hit an OB banana slice, I feel like I'll never get it back, and the next time it comes back...kind of. I guess I do need to have an inconsistent expectation.

    Thanks for the great insights Gen. I have one question (but unrelated to EVR), on the 11th, par 3, you pushed you hybrid way right - this is my "miss" as well - but I don't know what is causing it? Do you know why? Thanks!
    Also, I don't know how you can keep smiling even after mediocre (for you) shots. Incredible outlook! And what a nice smile to be around when playing golf!

    • @GenevieveLingGolf
      @GenevieveLingGolf  4 года назад

      Honestly, I kind of started my hybrid right where I was aiming 😂 I tend to aim far right on holes with water left (because that's my miss) so I definitely have to be better at that.. sorry I can't help you with your misses. The golf swing is such an intricate thing though and everyone's swings are so different it would be hard to "diagnose" why you hit it one way and I wouldn't want to give you advice that might potentially make it worse!

    Regarding par threes, imagine your chances of scoring on any hole when your approach shot is anywhere from 170 to 220 yards into the green. Give me par fours and fives any day. I always try to remember that it is a GAME and the point of a game is to have FUN.

    Par 3's are definitely the most difficult. But ironically they're the only ones to make a hole-in-one and gain a couple strokes :p

    When I quit getting upset my score dropped 10 almost instantly even though I barely played the 10 years before that. Now the mantra is the next shot is always the most important. Who cares how your ball got where it is? Still gotta get it in the hole.

    It is true....par 3’s are the hardest holes to consistently par. One mistake and say hello to bogey.

  • @GoApps95
    @GoApps95 4 года назад

    I find par 3s easier to make par on. My scoring averages support that as I am much close to par on average for par 3s than 4s or 5s. That is also easily diagnosable for my game as my biggest struggle is consistency with long and mid irons. 4s and 5s require me to hit consecutive good shots which is a weakness, and 3s only require the good tee shot. My greenside game is good for a mid handicapper (12) and I can scramble for that par on a 3 a lot easier. But on the 4s and 5s it's not uncommon that I am having to burn a shot on a recovery.
    This is unique to me, so there's probably no one right answer to "what's easier" for all of us.

    Keep track of your shots to get on the greens .....
    12 shots for the par 5’s
    20 shots for the par 4’s
    4 shots for the par 3’s
    43 shots for putts and chips .

    • @GenevieveLingGolf
      @GenevieveLingGolf  4 года назад +1

      I think it is definitely personal preference as you can probably get a hybrid and a wood to go the same distance. It really depends on what you like the look off and what feels best. Some people hate the look of hybrids so if that's you..i would say go for the woods!

    Manufacturers nowadays mess with the lofts so a specific iron number can vary greatly.

    • @GenevieveLingGolf
      @GenevieveLingGolf  4 года назад

      Yess, a lot of people like to use stronger lofts to seem like they "hit shorter clubs" but I think it does kind of affect the performance of the club.. especially with the longer ones. But I'm not expert! Just personally, i think that it would make the longer ones even harder to hit

    • @GenevieveLingGolf
      @GenevieveLingGolf  4 года назад +6

      I think you analyze why you get unhappy.. is it because of score? If you’re unhappy because of your score, you’re not living in the moment, taking it shot by shot. Once a hole is done.. it’s done! At the end of the day, we play so many rounds of golf and shoot so many scores. We might remember the best score and the worse score.. but if we play it shot by shot, we stop focusing on score and start cherishing the best SHOTS! Those are the ones that keep us coming back for more! 😊
