Retarder/engine brake is the braking system that forces the engine to reduce power/speed of a truck without touching your foot break. Most of the time it's located behind the steering wheel like wipers or indicators and it has stages, the more you put stages the slower the truck goes and it work hand in hand with changing down. The more you change down then retarder becomes more powerful to reduce the speed of a truck. I hope you do understand
