In my area, this small SUV is a failure. Since these SUV's came out, I've only seen about 4 on the road. What's killing this SUV is the price. It's just too high. For a couple more grand you can get the Rav4. The review was great as usual. Chabby you are correct, this SUV is loud and noisy.

Thanks Jack! I agree. Too expensive for what this vehicle delivers.

Agree on the price, the only models that make sense are the non hybrid models. If you spend more than that and you might as well buy the RAV4.

I'm happy with mine, because fuel in OryGONE is way high, not kalifornicate high but usually $4.50. I hypermile and @65+mpg. Watching videos of the super high mileage convinced me. RAV4 same conditions upper 40's. And I don't need or want whatever the EXTRA the RAV4 offers. Single grandparent, kids live 3 hours away, etc.

@@nosretep1960 If you drove at a lower speed on the highway and in ECO mode, you'd be getting close to 50 MPG like me. The kids can wait the extra 10 minutes it will take you at 55 MPH.

@@Cathy-xi8cb usually @60mpg. Yesterday was 56 running AC on full.

I just bought this exact model yesterday. Nightshade SE. Ive only driven it 100 miles so far...but i really, really like it. I havent figured out all the controls yet, but im getting there. Smooth, relatively quiet, powerful ride, IMO. I paid a little too much (34k), but in the end, i think it will be worth it.
These cars are rare to find...waiting list is long.

I understand I am not the average consumer here, I am looking at this because of how basic it is compared to other similar vehicles. Other than air conditioning, I do not care much about added creature comforts. I do not want any extra bs in the vehicle I use to get to work. I have accepted that I will have a giant stupid tablet built into my dash regardless of whether I want it in my vehicle or not. The consumer really loses in the new car market. I currently drive a 2004 Toyota Tundra.
I have been reading any critical reviews I find on this vehicle in anticipation of buying one as a commuter vehicle.
Maybe I am missing something, but i see value in the hybrid base model.
    I will list some thoughts.
I saw someone below say that you can get a camry at a similar price.
The camry is low to the ground.
The camry doesn't have as much cargo space. It is a sedan.
Where I live, There is snow on the ground 4 months of the year.
The camry will get stuck in the snow, often. A coworker of mine had one.
I also like to go hiking in remote spots. I would destroy the underside of a Camry.
The rav4 hybrid is $5k more expensive in my area. I do not understand that price difference, but It is out of my range.
Additionally, the vehicles discussed in this video as a competitor, kia or hyundai do have some different designs. While the corolla cross hybrid has a "cvt" trans, it is toyota's "ecvt". By all accounts I have seen, this is one of the most reliable transmissions on the market. It does not function like a typical cvt trans.
Also the competition uses turbo'd engines which do not contribute to reliability and longevity.
The info i have been reading tells me that this vehicle as well as other toyota hybrids all use a nickel metal hydride battery. Not lithium. Only the all electric & plug in toyota vehicles use lithium.
Nimh seems to be a good technology to extend a fuel vehicle's efficiency.
I don't appreciate what the mining of rare earth minerals is doing for out planet, but they are a valuable finite resource that should be used, recycled & re-used for something worthwhile. I think that using rechargeable batteries to supplement efficiency in a reliable fuel burning engine is a great use of our current technology. It can have a significant impact on fuel consumption.

For the size, being a hybrid, the horse power isn’t bad! The price seems steep. You can get the new Camry for that. 😂

Dont get the pricey XSE or nightshade, SE is best value. Save extra money for winter tires if you get snow in your area. The white or the red are the best colors imo as it makes car look modern and cool.

Nice vehicle! Blackout package looks good. Lots of Corolla sedan bits and pieces inside, but that's okay. Ditch the sunroof, roofrack cross bars, and AWD. The 2.0L gas model is still good for mileage..you make a prospective buyer think that one over..that is the value proposition factor. The Corolla SE sedan will satisfy most buyers. I think a product development "thinktank" worked hard to add function a bit, but also to boost price a lot! To me, the base Tucson or Sportage are logical competition and they are roomier. Take care with servicing and I think they will also last a long time like the Corolla. You do make prospective shoppers think..that adds a lot to a good review!

The small 1.5L turbo is much less reliable than the Toyota hybrid. The Toyota Corolla cross N/A is less powerful and slower. The Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid is a hands-down winner!

Toyota for the win. Kia is having some serious reliability issues these last few years as well as insurance is higher than Kia because of the theft reputation of them being the number 1 car brand to be stolen

Add NIMBLE, super quiet, same cargo area with seats down. I always hyper mile, 55-59 MPG highway, 70 otherwise. I HATE the MM ALWAYS STARTS WITH TOYOTA ADVERTISING instead of what it was when it was turned off! 🤬

You could add the CX30 to the alternative list. Sportier, no CVT and also comes with a turbo if wanted.

Poor visibility in those high tiny windows, and very poor MPGs. More fun to drive, far less fun to repair. Toyota is the GOAT at reliability and cost-to-own.
