So I went to music school entirely because Page Hamilton went to music school, obviously huge helmet fan, favorite band to this day! So the very first note you played that wasn't original I reflexively spit out my coffee. Then you played a second note that wasn't true to the original and I thought "Ok, he's bringing his own thing to it, I get it." After listening to this song literally thousands of times over 30 years I'm so conditioned to hear it verbatim, but here's the thing - bro, I gotta hand it to you. You demonstrated you CAN nail John's fills, but you can ALSO inject some fresh fills. I enjoyed it enough to watch it a couple times - I especially liked hearing what double kick would sound like and that fill right before the drum solo. You have a great ear, great chops, great taste in music. Keep up the great work man
Helmet's drum sound is iconic. Love the odd time signatures and Stanier's precise, restless drumming. His fills are fantastic, yet you never get the feeling he's showing off. Love the constant slight variation in them. This song has the sickest drumming on Meantime.
Awesome drum cover and I saw Helmet and Quicksand not only twice but my god did Helmet sound amazing in concert. Back in those days I never heard a band so tight and connected to one another for that perfect sound that they would lay out.
Got this album in 10th grade and this is still one of my all-time favorite drum tracks ever. That 3:07-3:10 part has always given me chills.. So fucking good.
Please keep doing what you're doing! There's little to no footage of some of these amazing drummers from that era. Your work can really help bridge that gap. 🤘🤘
Great cover performance. The only think I am not crazy about is the DW snare you are using. John's snare sound is so unique, the Tama brass snare he uses makes those Helmet songs even punchier. Great job otherwise!
Thanks for your encouragement Will, it means a lot my friend. I hope you're not getting discouraged with your awesome new kit. I think you'll start finding it easier to play them than the e-kit soon. That's the way it was for me. After getting used to the rebound, and mapping onto the kit, I find it a lot easier to play than the practice e-kit. And that's a great observation about the focus in the new studio, I'm not constantly worried that I'm bothering people, or there are cops at the door :)
one of your tool covers popped up in my recommended feed two days ago and since then I've watched some of your videos 2 or 3 times and I'll be eagerly awaiting the next ones. This one was good too, dug the groove and the fills lots of good stuff in this one.
Awesome man i love seeing the tutorials afterwards man, not many drummer on youtube do that which makes watching your videos 100x better and educational, amazing job man!
Another cover so soon, and a great song choice as usual. Awesome John! Man wish I could be in room when you're doing some of these and hear your playing in person. Cheers!
I've developed a stronger appreciation of the dexterity required to play acoustic due to my "upgrade" in percussive toys :) I've even gone back to a few of your earlier covers like Forty Six & 2 and seen them in a new light. Once again, well done on a faithful representation of the original track - something you do consistantly. Kudos for another well played, well mixed and well edited cover. I think that drum room also improves your focus - in the zone, so to speak. Well done brother.
Loved it. I saw them live here in Sydney. I couldn't take my eyes of the drummer. Freaking legend. I get to see the whole song in a birds eye view, thanks heaps man. You get loose a bit at 3:19, or was my hearing a bit off? I never enjoyed a drummer more than Helmet's...
I'm still hoping to see you cover "THE NOOSE" by APC. I requested it from you some time ago but you may not have seen it. There's a few guys on you tube that do it but you could bring it some real justice!
Hey John, have you got some sort of panning tripod head that is constantly turing the GoPro in front of your rack toms or is that just an edit in post? I sort of remember seeing something under the GoPro in another video of yours...
This song literally was the one that made me get a drum set. Stanier is amazing. Still my favorite Helmet song.
2:19 Amazing fill!
Heck yeah!
Helmets groove and drumming has always been top notch. Grew up with this and it still holds up today💥

You put in work man! I love this song, and it was amazing watching you perform it.
No idea what I just watched, I was waiting for you to fill it and then I had no idea. Thank you!!!!
I'm glad you like these tutorials - it makes it worthwhile to make them. Sometimes I wonder if they are useful to anyone else, haha.

Thanks dude, much appreciated, and I know what you mean about how sometimes it's nice just to keep time and enjoy the music.
This vid needs to go back on. Its one of the best!
Thanks man, this was such a good album...
Many thanks my friend - I did save a lot of the improvisation for the last half of the song.
That was absolutely amazing nice job bro!

Stanier rules! Great job on this great Helmet song. Have you done any Betty songs?
All smiles ... :) unreal performance John!
Bad asss!! John!! Good to see you're still rocking out!!
Godspeed bruthahh!
Kick ass John! Your precision and timing is always superb man.
Hey Nate - thanks for the comment and good to see you here.
@zaomaster That's an effect I used after recording in the video editor. Glad you liked it!
Holy shit man... You just blew my mind with all those fills in the second half.
Awesome man i love seeing the tutorials afterwards man, not many drummer on youtube do that which makes watching your videos 100x better and educational, amazing job man!

Love it, John! Been looking forward to this one! Great work once again.

I love the 7/8 bars in the verses. creates a great sort off-center beat.

Blown away with the energy in this song and cover. Great job, man =)

Thanks dude, I really got into this one :)
I'm with moonodude17 on this one. I replayed you from the 3:00 mark something like 3-4 times just to enjoy the song's drum energy!
YES!! Thanks for the great cover. Love it.
Kick ass bro ROCKIN!!!
Nice! Very nice done!!!! 🔊🍻🔊
Awesome job, man!
dude, great job, you've got the groove, bravo!
dang dude, you f**kin smashed it. nicely done!
I do have a motorized tripod mount for that front view camera, so it's constantly just panning back and forth.
Me too!John is a octopus-armed beast of dexterity.Immense.
John Stanier was one of my earliest drum influences along with Chad Smith. I got most of my style from both of them.
Stanier and Chamberlin for me!
Fucking awesome job mate. Such a great tune.
Thanks for your feedback!
Great job!
Yeah, those staccato riffs really make for great drum grooves.
WOW , that was great man !
Great job!!! I'm a drummer, and there's nothing more entertaining than a fellow drummer keeping solid time and playing with passion. Rock on ......
Such an inspiration ! thank you for sharing
Good as usual!
AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great job !! awesome stainer is god
De Rossi alla batteria!
That's a great observation my friend, that's one of the favorite parts of this song for me too. I dig the progressive tendencies of Helmet.
Glad you like the song choice too - Helmet is not everyone's cup of tea.
ya ripped it dude, very nice
insane cover
Awesome!
Also, needless to say, amazing cover of an amazing song! :)
Thank you for having one kick...seems some are scared of them or something🤙
Bravo!!!

SICK
Thanks man, glad you like it!
Glad you like it!
Nice job
Wooooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Was it a planned effect to have your overhead cam shake during filming? (Ex: at 3:08) Either way, definitely added to the effect.
I'm still hoping to see you cover "THE NOOSE" by APC. I requested it from you some time ago but you may not have seen it. There's a few guys on you tube that do it but you could bring it some real justice!
Sick!
Thanks!
Great work once again. It's Bubbanintendo and this is my new page.
