The once fearless Wayne Hayde, also known by his calypso sobriquet Watchman, gained a reputation as being somewhat fierce and combative when it come to Calypso.
CARIBBEAN INSIGHT TV (CITV) programs are cultural documentaries demonstrating the history of West Indians through their musical artistry. CITV's mission is to provide innovative, practical and top-quality products that will serve as a conscious raising vehicle and a cultural organizing tool for Caribbean History.
The once fearless Wayne Hayde, also known by his calypso sobriquet Watchman, gained a reputation as being some what fierce and combative during his days at the University of the West Indies St Augustine Trinidad. Always one who believes in justice and fair-play he quickly established himself as a leader and no-nonsense man.
That reputation followed him when he entered the Police Service in May 1975 and was cemented there, when he, attained the rank of Corporal and subsequently became president of the Police Social and Welfare Association (PSWA). That position placed him at constant loggerheads with his higher-ups, as he took the fight to them on behalf of his members who comprised the lower divisions of the Police Service.
It did not help that Hayde had yet another, more high-profile platform in Trinidad, that of popular calypsonian, `The Watchman', a role which gave him a microphone, a stage and access to the public, to whom he could express his opinions and vent his frustrations with the powers-that-be. Yes, it seems as though Wayne Hayde was an all-round thorn in the sides of his opponents and detractors.
Hayde, who has been working with the United Nations in Africa and other territories, said he has been observing with keen interest developments in the country over the years and felt the time was right to return home and make a contribution.
