A rare collection: all of Roussel’s music for small ensembles. It is a mix of varied combinations; sometimes highly unusual ones like piccolo and piano. A late starter, Roussel’s compositions mainly date from the first decades of the twentieth century.
Composer Albert Roussel has written a relatively limited oeuvre of delightful music. His works sound typically French and increasingly impressionistic. Then a neo-classical period followed. Somehow Roussel has not benefited from the popularity of music by contemporary French composers.
Recordings on this release include rarely performed music like the Aria no. 2 for Oboe and Piano, and Music from Elpénor, Poème radiophonique for flute and string quartet (1937). Also included are the Deux poèmes de Ronsard, Op. 26, for flute and soprano.
Great performances by prominent Dutch musicians like Paul Verhey on the flute, horn player Herman Jeurissen and cellist Herre-Jan Stegenga.

I was the recording engineer for this project. It was hard work pecause of the sheer amount of material, which had to be recorded in the time that we had booked the church in Amsterdam, and it was necessary to set up different microphone arrangements for each ensemble. But so rewarding to work with these wonderful musicians on such glorious music! I recall a couple of incidents (if I have the right sessions in mind after all these years!). Firstly, we had some problems with external noise, first when a street organ player set up his instrument outside the church, and we had to pay him to go away. Shortly after that another one arrived, and I had visions of all the organists coming from the whole city to make some quick money... And on another day, an Australian digeridoo player arrived. Unbelievable. Lastly, we had some difficulty with some noise inside the church, when one of the musicians tried to play in tight leather trousers, which creaked and squeeked in time with the music. I do not recall what the remedy was. It cannot have been the obvious one...
I see that the set of 2 CDs titled "Ibert: Chamber Music" is also available on Brilliant Classics. I would also recommend that to those enjoying this Roussel collection. I happened to have recorded that too. Hey, Brilliant - any chance of making that available on RUclips also? :)

For those who don't know Roussel, a better place to start would be Le Festin de l'Araignee. But in this collection the Serenade at 01:49:48 is an exquisite masterpiece. The duo for bassoon and cello that follows is also great. One of the great creators of the XXth Century for sure.
Yes, I, too, had little awareness of this wonderful music. Agree w/ Robt. Berger & others' appreciation of Roussel - distinctive style, & in a neoclassic sense (post-WWII), very modern. I am glad to listen to Roussel´s music. I only knew of him by a guitar composition dedicated to the great Andrés Segovia.

Roussel's music is vastly different from his contemporaries Debussy and Ravel and he has an unmistakable personal stye of his own . It's much more rugged, earthy and dissonant than theirs .
It is the first time I've heard it, really wonderful chamber music, specially the Ronsard poems and the music with string quartet.
