- Music Stuff with Spock #1: In this video I explore how to bow suspended cymbals using a violin and cello bow. I use a crash, a jazz-ride and a splash cymbal. Regular bowing, tremolo and whisper tones.

Reminds me of Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Thanks for the awesome video
Glad to find this here! I've always been an avid instrument accumulator and avant-garde fan... These past days I found my old viola and proceeded to bow everything in sight, including my cymbals... I thought it was so interesting I even recorded a brief clip to show some mates. To find such an informative video on the subject is a testament to the wonders of the internet! Thanks so much for the effort put into this!
I'm glad you liked it. There are so many neat things you can do with a bow. Here are a few more videos of mine related to bowing things in unusual ways:

Fantastic video. I'm really inspired by what you do :)
Thanks, I hope to do a bunch of these.
Glad I found this. Always thought that that sound was a synthesizer.
I'm sure a lot of people do.
Super cool!
Thank you. Although the quality is low compared to my later videos. I may update/redo this some day.
thank you! I made some great recordings with my cello bow and a bunch of different cymbals. I was just worried about the hair, but I can't see no harm.
I especially liked the China, it was literally screaming. I also have a heavy Bell cymbal which produced a very piercing sine-like sound that made me wear ear protection while recording :)
That sounds neat - and yes, china cymbals have very unique and complicated sounds. Just in case you haven't seen this effect: ruclips.net/video/5NQ8fqf6v2U/видео.html
What do you put on the bow to do the friction?
@@PedroMellodrums Cello Rosin, but just as much as if I was playing Cello.
I just got my first China cymbal and am starting to experiment with that now. A lot of interesting almost chord-like sounds.
@@PedroMellodrums I missed this comment (sorry). You put rosin on the bow, I use either cello or bass rosin. The bass rosin is a little stickier. In this video I am using a cello bow, but have recently gotten a bass bow - which seems to be more effective for most sounds (but whispers seem to be better with the cello bow).
Thanks!
You're welcome. I'm glad you liked it (and sorry for my tardiness in my response).
Really nice video Michel.
I have to improvisation (videos) on my channel that I used violin bow, and some others things on the cymbal.
Bye. =D
Thanks. . . and some very interesting stuff on your channel as well. I'm listening to your Xenakiana right now. It reminds me of an electronic (and more controlled) version of Cage's HPSCHD (which I didn't care for as much). I've used textures that are similar to that one. Neat stuff (so I subscribed).
great stuff
Thank you.
Brilliant stuff, thanks
You've very welcome. I want to do a better version of this video some day. It was my first attempt at an educational video.
@@spocksmusic go for it!
@@spocksmusiclooking forward to it!
This is genius.
Thank you. It's a very neat technique. I did a second (kind of related) video about lowering a cymbal into a vat of water you might also find interesting. Here is a link in case you are: ruclips.net/video/5NQ8fqf6v2U/видео.html

Nice shirt.
Thank you. I thought I'd honour you guys in my first "Music Stuff With Spock" video. I'm just about to do another one of these (only this time with a vat of water).

Glad you liked it. I have a bass bow now and will eventually redo this video with all the stuff I have learned since. Probably MSWS #25.
What do you put on the bow to do the friction?
Rosin. Sticky bass rosin (sorry, I missed this at the time)
And you wonder why your upstairs neighbors stomp on the floor?
Again, only done when they weren't there.
Writing a creepy tune, I was going to ask the percussionist to use soft wool mallets to do a roll here and there - NO idea you could do a bowed tremolo, so much better! (And better for the musician so they don't have to switch back and forth between bow and mallets!) Thanks!
You are very welcome. . . but not everyone knows how to use a bow on a cymbal. Fortunately it is very easy to get some pretty neat sounds.
