Good advice of course but sadly in this economic environment, most Americans do not even have 500 in savings for emergency. As wages stagnate and this post "pandemic" inflation continues to creep, more and more people young and old are unable to even get by at end of the month. And as these wars continue to ramp up especially with what Israel is doing, things are not going to get better. Things are not gonna pretty in the coming years and decades and the kids being born now are basically DOA. Suicide of the Superpower
@@MacNur-tu3cq Don't get me wrong there are always those who are suffering and I feel for those folks however, "most Americans so not even have 500 in savings for an emergency"? Nope! I am not buying that. Why do I say that you might ask? I worked a concert last night and the place was sold out with tickets selling for at least $100 ea. and up, way up. 16,000 people in a small college town in Va.. Check out the lines at Starbucks as you drive around. Watch College football on a Saturday and see the packed stadiums not to mention the tail gating and drinks that goes with it. How about the NFL and Major League Baseball do you have any idea what those tickets cost? I could go on and on my friend but you get my point. Most people are not in the shape you are feeling or seeing. They just aren't. That is something people say to make themselves feel better about their situation. If you find yourself in that situation do something about it. Get a second job, change jobs or maybe just get a job! Quit with the pity me thing and do something! Don't forget along the way to help the sick and elderly but go make a difference in your life and your families life.
These days every day you arrive at work you don’t know if it’s your last day. Companies closing and downsizing left and right. I’ve had 5 jobs since I got out of the service in 2000. I’ve only quit one of them. 3 of them was abruptly laid off and the 5th one I’m still at. One of them was 8000 people all at once nationwide let go
I’ve always said hunger is one hell of a motivator. I’ve known multi millionaires who will stop and pickup a soda pop can for a nickel. Tough times make tough people.
A friend once said "If you take care of the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves." I still pick up pennies I see on the ground. Once I found a small diamond ring that everybody told me was fake. It was real & worth about $250 at that time.
I knew an NFL player who told me of the team's rookie initiation talk said the NFL stands for NOT FOR LONG. You may be getting big money now, but it could end with any injury. Save for the future, don't spend like it's never going to end. Unfortunately too many 20-year-olds don't listen and end up broke.
Great advice Kenny! I had a rough stretch that put me in credit card debt while I was unemployed, I lost everything but my work ethic. I worked hard and never blamed anyone for my situation. Today, I am debt free and save everything I can.
I wish I would've started to secure my money a long time ago...but then again I've always been broke pretty much. And as far as 7-11 I'm old enough to remember that...the Big Gulp, a 16 oz bottle of soda with the opener on the crate, good stuff man.
Those are very good words to learn from. When I was young I loved the feeling of spending money, but when I maxed out my credit card and had to start paying it down, it made me appreciate money, and as I got older, I found I didn't want to spend money unless I had too. So now, I am not in your position, but I am happy with my lifestyle and will be able to retire, eventually. Keep up the too work Kenny, as you said it is not about how much you have, but what you do with what you do have that makes the difference.

Grandpa who was a money -saving machine was often quoted as saying. Don’t worry about saving dollars, focus on saving the pennies, the Dollars will take care of themselves. That lesson well over 40 yrs ago has served me well today.. while I am by no means rich, I am however much more financially well off today because today, I’m that same ol grumpy grandpa I loved and miss. You have always been a favorite of mine Kenny. I thought when they put you in front of a camera after your NASCAR days it was pure magic and I was looking for you at every broadcast!
What a lesson! I was raised to be in debt for everything and LOOK rich basically. I found out a young adult that is no fun and no way to really live! Thanks for the advice Kenny! Love it!
Kenny, I know you will understand this. I’m 53 and growing up as a kid with no money. I would look at the Sears catalog and I can remember looking at the BMX bicycles and they would have 3 choices, good, better and best bicycles. I always wanted the best but could only afford the good one. When I started working and my company offered a 401k, I started putting 30% of my salary in it and just living on less than I earned. I’m going to retire in 7 years at 60 and now I can live the rest of my life with no money worries. I’m a saver also. No credit cards, bank loans and I don’t waste money on gambling. I can remember when Dale Jr was interviewed and he talked about having all the money he wanted and he still lived in a double wide trailer. Obviously that was a long time ago, but it hit home with me. He’s a good example of saving his money and really having delayed gratification. Man, I love when you just get real and talk from the heart.
No respect for the red headed step child junior.... He never worked for anything it was all handed to him. Dale Senior even said that growing up junior wasn't worth a crap. He didn't want to work just lay around the house. So don't put junior in this category he has never felt what's is like to be broke. The guy is worth over 300 million and has never worked for any of it. That's one reason Teresa said no I'm not giving everything me and your dad worked for. Also the equipment junior had while driving he should have 100 wins. He was a ok driver because he didn't have that drive to win. Why won't when you already have all the money you will ever have.
That’s why I had a huffy bike as a kid! My folks are retired in their 70s pinched every penny! They just gave me 8200$ for a new HVAC system. Hell they use antenna tv and still use DSL internet. They’ll never have to worry about money ever!
I always enjoy hearing financial stories from older heads! My father taught me a lot about money and today at the age of 32 I am well ahead of my generation. Take care Herm!
Great advice. I have lived like the money would always be there, and then it wasn't. I have had a lot of fun though. My dad died and had a lot of money and property, and I was mad that he didn't spend it. He stressed about saving and he still died. At 59. That saying "you can't take it with you when you're gone" is very true. I have fun with my money because in the end I won't need it. There is a difference too with being frugal and being a miser.
I used to work for a former NASCAR driver I won't name but when he died a few years ago he was living in a travel trailer next to a shop he no longer owned but racing full time. He didn't have a lot of money but he had a ton of friends and lived his best life to the very end. I guess my message is that money can be important but it's not necessarily everything.
As kids in the 80's Jack Arute let me pick nickel cans Stafford Speedway and Kenny B paid us a roll of quarters every week to clean his race car.. Always had something to spend it on

We would go around construction sites in the early 80’s by my house and look for coke bottles that you could win prizes in the bottle caps. I got so many free 16oz cokes doing that. Broke as a joke, but wanted that coke! Ah, the memories!
Herm deserves a ton of admiration & respect for sharing this with all of us. ........and he's right: far too many people who "made the big time" THOUGHT they would remain on top ( in all kinds of things, not just racing ), but then they found out the hard way, by living a lavish lifestyle while blowing their money on family & friends. Lost my Dad a little over year ago. I needed to hear this again. Hope all is well. I need to come catch a dirt race. Neighbor to the south in the Ozarks
When I was racing karts I hauled my stuff in the back of an old S-10 and was beating guys with big trailers. I dug tires and clocks out of the garbage but when I beat them I would have to put my motor back together after it got tore down every week.
I turn sixty in December. I took more than half of my Teamsters pension and put it in a program that I can't touch for seven years. Smartest thing I have ever done. God bless you all!
That's why they say, "It ain't what you make, it's what you keep." I worked in a bank for 4 years in my early 20s...learned a LOT about people and money management...or should I say lack thereof? Saw people with dual 6 figure incomes (in 1992 when that was still a lot of money) who had to borrow money to fix their kids' cars. And the ones with the most money didn't look like they had jack shit. That experience was priceless. Live below your means, get that money working for you, and time will take care of everything else.
You did win one race in cup in my opinion and that was Dale Sr’s last win Kenny. Also you are one hell of a wheel man on dirt I’ve got to watch you a lot on dirt and got to meet you several times and you are a class act
Class of 81 also. From my early teens I mowed yards in the summer, raked leaves in the fall, and shoveled sidewalks on snow days (also sold the grass clippings and leaves to a local farmer at a small profit). Always had some spending money - never rich but I always seemed to have just enough. Also picked up those glass soda bottles and usually traded in for ice cold Pepsi. This were good memories.
I've read the same thing. When I started my research for retirement I was SHOCKED when reading about the baby boomer generation and how bad off they are for retirement savings.
Numerous stories of drivers opening their own race teams and winding up with nothing at the end. Racing is a great way to start with $2 Million and wind up with $ 1 Million.
Kenny, I heard a driver say many years ago that 1st place might pay pretty good but you better learn what last place pays, you might be living off of that. I have started changing my life around in many ways, money being one of them. Little late but .... My foreman is a good saver and gives me advice as well as his financial guy. You give great advice here and I thank you for that.
Hey Kenny, I totally agree with your stance on money. None of us can always be sure that they'll be able to earn it. Invest your money right and let it work for you. I'll gaurentee you it will work much harder than you ever will!. BTW, that tune you were singing "Rolling With The Flow". The words are not 'Ive got my angel raising kids'. Its 'while guys my age are raising kids'. Im a working musician and i used to sing this song onstage for years they way that you did.. but then after all that time, I found the real lyrics. Take Care Kenny!
That's the way to finish the last race of the year at that track!!! Way to give them some wisdom!!! Meaning they have to work on getting a bit faster and it smarter!! You only learn more win you loose. Great job!!!
Good for you ! Same story for me except is was a Burger Chef with a GIANT 1/2 lb ground round slab on it. Hard to hold with 2 hands. When the day came, Burger Chef was gone. I settled for a Burger King version, but it wasn't the same as my wish-list had expired.
I did the same as you Kenny. When I was growing up making money if I had $50 I might spend half of it and rat hole half of it and then $50 again spend half and rat hole half now I've got $50 of rat hole money so I was never broke. Your wisdom is great and growing up strapped for money can teach you how to be wise, not so much cheap just wise.
This is the best video you've ever made and I believe everything you say because I'm the same way. I collected pop bottles just like you but I'm a little older than you
Reminds me of when I was in the Navy. We got paid with a green government check - just like the ones you got issued for your federal tax return. When all the other sailors left the base and went out on the town, I'd stay on base and drink at the enlisted mens club. Free live bands, 80 cents for a mixed drink. For 10 bucks I could have eight drinks, grab a 14 in pizza and walk back to the barracks. The other guys were flat bloke the next day having spent $300 in less than 24 hours. I literally had my checks taped to the inside of my locker. My roommates were shocked how I did it.
Same thing happened to a lot of rock stars. Look at how many stars of the 60s, 70s, and 80s had to start touring again in the 90s. Hell, look at MC Hammer. On top of the world in the 90s. Broker than broke in the 2000s. Granted, the lifestyles are different, but a lot of the spending habits are the same.
@@dpmulvan some of them did, same thing has happened to numerous other celebrities. But a lot of them spent the money because they thought it would never end. MC Hammer and Nicolas Cage are perfect examples of that. Both things can be true.
Kenny, don't let the broke, (probably uneducated), racers that aren't smart enough to chase sponsors to support their racing addiction. YOU SIR HAVE PROVEN YOURSELF AT THE UPPER LEVELS OF NASCAR!! Once you become a name within your profession, sponsors are easy to obtain.
And the younger a person is the more time they have to save for retirement. I am behind at 41; however having some put aside is better than nothing. I HIGHLY encourage everyone to start saving if they haven't yet.
Good advice Kenny. I too had humble beginnings. When I started to work I got lucky and found an incredible lady that had humble beginnings like me. My kids will end up spending my last dollar after I’m dead. (Generational wealth seldom lasts for many of the same reasons you mentioned)

Great advice Kenny!
That's why they say, "It ain't what you make, it's what you keep."
I worked in a bank for 4 years in my early 20s...learned a LOT about people and money management...or should I say lack thereof? Saw people with dual 6 figure incomes (in 1992 when that was still a lot of money) who had to borrow money to fix their kids' cars. And the ones with the most money didn't look like they had jack shit. That experience was priceless.
Live below your means, get that money working for you, and time will take care of everything else.
Exactly. Working at a bank was likely a great lesson in human behavior. We can learn a lot.
Kenny, Spot on Mate
You and your whole. Family are just the down to earth Americans. Thank you
You did win one race in cup in my opinion and that was Dale Sr’s last win Kenny.
Same here..plus paper route
70% of 60 yr olds have ZERO savings for Retirement 😳. In the Greatest Country on Earth🤦♂️.
Reckon im in that 30% 😎
You’re not alone buddy ,I just keep getting up and trying!😅
I’m blessed at 66 years of age…
I've read the same thing. When I started my research for retirement I was SHOCKED when reading about the baby boomer generation and how bad off they are for retirement savings.
and you're told to risk you're retirement at the casino (Wall Street) and hope your financial advisor knows wtf he or she is talking about.
Numerous stories of drivers opening their own race teams and winding up with nothing at the end. Racing is a great way to start with $2 Million and wind up with $ 1 Million.
how to become a millionaire in NASCAR? Start out as a billionaire.
Kenny just tells it like it is. I love it!
Facts, Thank You...
I believe I heard NHRA Pro Stock legend Warren Johnson say once, “You can’t have enough Horse Power, Money and Love.”
Great story GoodSir! People like to spend spend spend ,like one of my friends said just swipe that card 😂😂. Got to be smart with that $!
This is the best video you've ever made and I believe everything you say because I'm the same way.
I collected pop bottles just like you but I'm a little older than you
You speak the truth and you are a genuine guy love ya Kenny
I wish a lot more people were open as you even in the music industry. I do not look at it as showing off I look at it as a lesson 👍
You are the man. You always tell it like it is that's why I love brother.
Words of Wisdom right there!👍
Your a good genuine dude and I appreciate the hell out of ya. Thanks Herm! Invest in Tesla, Nvidia, AMD, Amazon, etc.
Kenny works hard (and don't let him kidd you, has tremendous talent in may arenas), deserves it all!
Most musicians got screwed by record executives, drugs and Napster.
@@dpmulvan some of them did, same thing has happened to numerous other celebrities. But a lot of them spent the money because they thought it would never end. MC Hammer and Nicolas Cage are perfect examples of that. Both things can be true.
I remember LLCoolJ talking about that. He drove a old Honda Accord and never bought into the rich lifestyle. He is really a wise man
MC Hammer is not rock 😂

The point.

Your head.
Kenny you are rich in cash but super rich in smart’s love your videos keep them coming some people just don’t get it.
Having a stable family life has a lot to do with your success. High school sweatheart is a great start. Some of the divorces can get very expensive.
I just looked it up and Rick Flair is on divorce number five!
9 Busch races Kenny.....not Xfinity. It will always be the Busch series for me anyway. Good advice Kenny.
I am glad that things turned out this way, I get to have coffee and sing along with you, them fellers with championships don't have coffee with me.
i remember seeing a show with you years and years ago. You were preaching the same thing on that show and then you showed us the rentals on the cul-de-sac
