How do you end a drawing tool. I have shut down silhouette and reopened it, but any new design still has the shape box open.

The drawing tool should cease drawing when you let go of the mouse. It will keep the box open because you have that design selected. Click once outside of the box to deselect the design.

when you are done using the tools how to exit and stop using the tool

You can just click onto whichever tool you want to use next. The arrow tool on the top left is the default that will allow you to drag and rearrange objects - TRW Shannon
