    If you want to keep DVDs, there are plastic sleeves that come in 100 packs that take up a fraction of the space that the normal dvd covers do. You can even fit the cover art.

    I cracked up when you said “remotes that go to…nothing?”
    This was such a great list and it was soooooo spot on!
    At first when you said that we don’t even use 80% of the stuff we have, I was like - wait- what?! Looked around at my stuff thinking when’s the last time I used the things in the desk or the storage bins… has to be pretty close to a true number.
    I really need to go through my things again. 🤣😭

    Hi Shannon, You saved me! I started in the cabinet under my kitchen sink, where I keep small buckets with cleaning supplies. When I opened the door, several of the buckets were FULL OF WATER! A pipe had broken and I didn't know it. Luckily, it hadn't done massive damage and I was able to get parts to replace it. Your video saved me from having a terrible mess, so THANK YOU!!!!! Courtney

I ordered new pillow covers at half the price of one pillow and I bought three new pairs of pillow covers and my decor is completed at one fourth the price by recovering perfectly good pillows. Yup - - - 15 year old ammonia, has to go, ha ha ha. I remember it from the video with your mom. It made me laugh!
    We all had the "vase collection" under the sink for all those flowers we never get, buy or display. I got rid of mine years ago.
    I had a match book collection many years ago collected over several years. They are all never used and in a huge display jar, many of the
    covers are very artful and remind me of places I've visited and had good times at. I'm keeping my match books!
    Buttons - most of our grandma's all saved them and had a button box, this one is sort of tradition passed down to us.
    Agree with all the rest on your list - old DVD's, gone many years ago, frames, all the plastic utensils, crock pots, remotes; this is a great list.

    Thank you for a great list. I second the uselessness of a pineapple corer. It takes much space and does not do a job that a regular knife would do any better. I had a couple and threw them out. It is great to see that your helped you mother to declutter. In my case, my mother holds on to every piece of stuff she has. Decluttering her place is impossible and I would not even attempt mentioning it as a potential project. One huge category for decluttering that you did not mention is books. We tend to accumulate books we have read and liked over the decades. The result is hundreds of books that many people would not dare to look at as decluttering objects. The biggest offenders are reference and cookbooks as the most recent information is readily available on internet.

    I have given so much away from my kitchen and to hear how it has helped the person I gave it to makes you/me feel good. I have done the linen closet and maybe you feels so good to get rid of things that we don't use any Moore there's this for feeling of accomplishment when you get rid of things you don't need and you know it can help somebody else.

    OLD PHONES:
    Old deactivated phones that hold a charge can be a godsend. Most every person fleeing domestic violence has way more needs than they have money for. Rather than paying for a security system, they can use the free Alfred app with old phone(s) and WiFi to have a remotely accessible home surveillance system. This is great for survivors' peace of mind and can generate hard evidence in obtaining and enforcing protection orders. I hope your viewers will consider decluttering old phones to their local domestic violence shelter. Their junk can make a world of difference for people in desperate circumstances.

    So many awesome ideas. I am practically a hoarder and I really want to focus on getting rid of some of the STUFF I've accumulated and get my space back. The one thing I disagree about at least for my life is the DVDs. If they're not movies you'll watch, sure, get rid of them. If you will, it's better to have them on hand sometimes, since streaming services constantly take things away to make room for other content. The physical copies are also nice to have in a pinch if internet goes down--both for kids and also for elderly parents who might watch a lot of TV or movies (my mom is bedridden and has dementia). It's also nice to not have to search through 17 different streaming services for a title. We did recently go through our DVDs and take stock, though, and ended up getting rid of a decent amount. It was such a nice feeling!

    If you need and use kitchen unitaskters don’t let people tell you to get rid of them just because they are unitaskers. For some of us an apple corer is much more functional than a knife. When I’m making apple butter it’s faster to put all the apples through the apple corer/cutter than it is to use a knife, and I don’t hurt my hands by cutting up apples for an hour.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  8 месяцев назад

      Yep, just to be clear I am not telling anyone to get rid of anything. I am giving people ideas of things that they could possibly do without if an item isn't used very often. This is why decluttering and minimalism is unique to each individual person. A lot of people have all these extra gadgets that they never use, but they can't figure out why their drawers won't shut and they can't find anything. =)

    Also you can take old shoes to DSW and get $5 credit per week. I donate 1 pair per week and use the credit to buy new shoes after 2-3 months

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  Год назад +2

      I think you can return them to most cell phone stores or some office stores also take electronics back to recycle.

    If you love that kitchen gadget that only does one thing, then keep it. A declutter is supposed to make you feel better.

      Yes of course if you love it and use it, but if you are looking to be more minimal then those are the sort of things that can go =)

    I feel like I can't decluter my old phones! I have about 20 omg 😢 because they have memories that are trapped on them. The phones are mostly broken. I feel like I need a hacker to get my stuff off. I would pay good money to a tech person who can do this for me

      Same here. I'm not tech savvy so don't know how to retrieve things off my phone. HOWEVER I've been told most older phones have a SIM card that can be removed that has all your phone date on it. Now what to do with the SIM card if and once removed; I have no idea! LOL My city has a quarterly electronic recycling program and the next one is this weekend. I'm determined to either figure out the SIM cards or just donate the phones as is. After all it's been years and if I haven't been able to access the data on the phone in all this time, I highly doubt I will miss the phones. Good luck to us both no matter what you end up doing. 😊

      Look for a data recovery service. We’re finally dealing with this. I’m afraid we’ve lost precious photos, but I need to just face the fear, find out, and get rid of all the old tech. Hopefully a service can recover some things.

      CVS and Walmart used to have computers to get your pictures, you could just plug in your phone and upload your pictures to print, or put in the SIM card. Not sure they still have them, this was a few years ago. Good luck 🤞
