My mother took me up Hanging Rock when I was 8. The movie had just come out but she had not seen it yet. When she did she said if she'd known we never would have gone there. It spooked her right out. We have gone back up there several times since though.
She said she would like to do it one more time though. She's too slow on her feet now. We'd need a base camp every twenty meters. I told her if she was serious, I'd carry her up there...

Some Australian movies, like Priscilla- Queen of the Desert are older and more commercial than most on this list but very dear to our hearts, and are not mentioned here - The Castle, Muriel's Wedding, Strictly Ballroom to name a few. The crime show you might have watched might be the mini-series Underbelly, based on true history and very compelling.

Very loosely based on true history was Underbelly. If one had ever encountered any of the real characters, then saw them portrayed on screen, it was fucking hilarious. Druggo scrubbers played by beautiful actresses walking in slow motion with their hair waving in the breeze. Absolutely stupid crooks glamourised; sorry but I can't watch it.
I would recommend, since we're now onto series, "Blue Murder" ABC TV about D/Sgt Roger Rogerson (aka The Dodger) which is brilliant. "Killing Time" based on the Walsh St murders in Melbourne, "Janus" and *Pheonix" (the last 2 of which may actually be too realistic for the average viewer).

I’ve always been interested in movies based on real life, so I love The Sapphires (with Aussie singer, Jessica Mauboy), Red Dog 🐕 set in the Edit☆Pilbara, specifically Dampier near Karatha in WA, Phar Lap (story about a famous horse who ran the Melbourne Cup), The Man from Snowy River, The Dressmaker, Mad Max, Crocodile Dundee and Galipoli. Other honourable mentions would be Breaker Morant (bawled my eyes out in this movie), Rabbit Proof Fence, Muriel’s Wedding, The Castle, and Strictly Ballroom. A recent movie with Delta Goodrem, Love Is in the Air. For Children’s movies, try Babe or Oddball. Some older ones also include Picnic at Hanging Rock, or My Brilliant Career or maybe Storm Boy.

Who would have heard of a 2023 movie made by RUclipsrs??? Half of these movies I've never heard of! What about Gallipoli, Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan, The Water Diviner, Breaker Morant, Beneath Hill 60, The Great Gatsby, the Lighthotsemen, Paradise Road, Attack Force Z, Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Dressmaker, William Kelly's War, The Sum Of Us, Romper Stomper, Bootmen, Australia, The Man From Snowy River I & II, Lantana, Emerald City, Strictly Ballroom, Baz Lurhman's Romeo & Juliet, The Story Of The Kelly Gang (1906 - the longest narrative movie yet seen in the world!), Knowing, Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, A Town Like Alice, The Killing Field - not 'Fields', Snowtown, Babe, Happy Feet, Sirens, Wolf Creek, Chopper, The Dish, The Castle, Red Dog, Red Dog: True Blue, Rabbit Proof Fence, Muriel's Wedding, Storm Boy, The Year My Voice Broke, Walkabout, Crocodile Dundee I & II, We Of The Never Never, Looking For Alibrandi, The Sapphires, Sunday Too Far Away, Malcolm, Kenny, Strange Bedfellows (Paul Hogan/Michael Caton), Jindabyne, The Chant Of Jimmy Blacksmith, Love & Other Catastrophes, Mad Max Movies, Puberty Blues, Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, Phar Lap, The Year Of Living Dangerously, Razorback, Careful, He Might Hear You, Bush Christmas, Evil Angels, The Club, An Indecent Obsession, Shine, Tim, The Silver Brumby, Quigley Down Under, Proof, Blood Oath (aka Prisoners Of The Sun), Kokoda, The Wog Boy, Maos Last Dancer, Carlotta, Samsom & Delilah, Balibo, Dead Calm, BMX Bandits, The Heartbreak Kid, My Brilliant Career and to top of these minute few is Baz Lurhman's Elvis!
Let's not forget the endless Mini-Series that were just as brilliant as a movie, but cannot be included.
I realise there aren't any recent movies included, this is due to moving to a rural area and not many good movies are worth shelling out for anymore, no matter where they are from - in my opinion. I could have added many more, yet those of younger generations wouldn't know of these or those that came before them. I didn't add those that I hadn't seen or weren't familiar with. I even left off those smaller movies that would be known in Melbourne, yet not in Sydney. Therefore, the amount of movies that we have made is beyond the imagining of most. Unfortunately, it was Australia that killed off our own Movie Industry. We offered up tax credits to the world and they came running. Americans would give up the right to state that the movie they had dreamed of would now be called Australian Made. Even the one I left for last, Elvis, is an Australian movie which must have him turning in his grave. Now, Australia is known for making movies for everyone else but for ourselves. We still have the talent. Just look under the free YT Movie William's Kelly's War and take in those comments. The 70s, 80s and partially into the 90s were our time to shine, now we simply make movies for everyone but ourselves. The movies from the above list in the video are mostly an embarrassment compared to our true achievements.
I came across a quote by the late critic Roger Ebert when checking whether a movie was actually Australian.
"Is everyone in Australia a few degrees off from true north? You can search in vain through the national cimema for characters who are ordinary or even boring; everyone is more colourful than life. If England is a nation of eccentrics, Australia leaves it at the starting line".
Roger Ebert describing the eccentric national character in his review for the film Chopper (2000).
Personally, I think that it's a most wonderful compliment, as it is the eccentrics who are the greatest of actors and artists.
My guess would be that it was a young kid who put that disastrous list together in that video. One only needs to look at the dates of the movies. Make recommendations by all means, but never state that a list like this is somehow mutually agreed upon by all Aussies! We are true blue Aussies, but with minds and taste of our own.🇦🇺💖👩🏼‍🎨

Mad Max, Crocodile Dundee, Australia, Chopper, The Castle, Two Hands, Animal Kingdom, Shine, Prasilla Queen of the Dessert and Gallipoli are true Aussie classics. Candy, Malcolm, Romper Stomper, and The big steal are pretty good too. Underbelly season 1 is pure crime drama gold. The Tourist is an Australian/British produced crime drama. Recently watched the 2nd season. Worth a watch. The Wolf Creek movies and TV shows are pretty good outback horror style. 2nd Mad Max is better. The biggest Aussie Movie of all time is Crocodile Dundee. So good. 1 & 2 are movies I will watch forever. The best comedy is The Castle. They made an edited for American audiences version too. Watch the Australian version, if you can. Some words were changed to American english. Aparently we speak a little differently in Oz. The Castle and Crocodile Dundee are Australian national treasures. Both very different yet both extremely Aussie. One big budget and one not so big budget. Guess which is which.

Thankyou for showing this. I'm an Australian, living in the Australian outback and in my 50's. I haven't seen most of these films, I have several SVOD's such as Paramount, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc, to the point where I'm swamped with options and alas the forest does get lost in the trees. I've seen movies from the era of 'going to the cinemas' being a special treat for the family, such as with 'PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT' or 'THE WATER BOY', much of which was filmed near my home in Quorn, Flinders Ranges of South Australia. Much of 'WOLF CREEK' was also filmed near the family sheep station at Parachilna, also in the Flinders Ranges of the South Australian outback. I digress from my points though which were to say thankyou for showing me several movies worth looking for and stating that sometimes too many options can be a bad thing as it's easy to miss the pebble in the rocks.

Most of the Mad Max movies were filmed in Australia. The exception was Fury Road which was filmed in Namibia because unexpected rain had made the Australian desert too green. Much of the filming of both the Mad Max movies and Priscilla Queen of the Desert was done around and in the town of Broken Hill in far West NSW. The town took the movie to heart and every year put on the ‘Broken Heel’ festival which was a scream.
