My mother took me up Hanging Rock when I was 8. The movie had just come out but she had not seen it yet. When she did she said if she'd known we never would have gone there. It spooked her right out. We have gone back up there several times since though. She said she would like to do it one more time though. She's too slow on her feet now. We'd need a base camp every twenty meters. I told her if she was serious, I'd carry her up there...
I haven't heard of half the movies on this list. Where's The Castle? Or The Dish? Movies such as Gallipoli, Chopper, Crocodile Dundee, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Wolf Creek and a few others should have been mentioned. Especially with a title such as "Top 10 Australian Movies EVER!"
Well, as an older viewer of movies, I loved Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Dressmaker, Malcolm, The Getting of Wisdom, My Brilliant Career, Babe, Muriel's Wedding. Many Australian movies were the launching pad for actors to move into Hollywood.
The Castle is my all-time fave Aussie movie. One of my all-time favourite movies full stop. I have watched it infinity times since 1997. Love Muriel's Wedding, The Dressmaker, Young Einstein.... I could go on! 😃😃

Some Australian movies, like Priscilla- Queen of the Desert are older and more commercial than most on this list but very dear to our hearts, and are not mentioned here - The Castle, Muriel's Wedding, Strictly Ballroom to name a few. The crime show you might have watched might be the mini-series Underbelly, based on true history and very compelling.
Terrible list only looking at recent movies. The only exceptions being Priscilla and Mad Max and Shine. So many movies were missed. The Castle, Babe, crocodile Dundee 1, a movie many would not know, 40,000 Horseman. The Odd Angry Shot. Danger Close, about the Vietnam War.
Very loosely based on true history was Underbelly. If one had ever encountered any of the real characters, then saw them portrayed on screen, it was fucking hilarious. Druggo scrubbers played by beautiful actresses walking in slow motion with their hair waving in the breeze. Absolutely stupid crooks glamourised; sorry but I can't watch it. I would recommend, since we're now onto series, "Blue Murder" ABC TV about D/Sgt Roger Rogerson (aka The Dodger) which is brilliant. "Killing Time" based on the Walsh St murders in Melbourne, "Janus" and *Pheonix" (the last 2 of which may actually be too realistic for the average viewer).
I’ve always been interested in movies based on real life, so I love The Sapphires (with Aussie singer, Jessica Mauboy), Red Dog 🐕 set in the Edit☆Pilbara, specifically Dampier near Karatha in WA, Phar Lap (story about a famous horse who ran the Melbourne Cup), The Man from Snowy River, The Dressmaker, Mad Max, Crocodile Dundee and Galipoli. Other honourable mentions would be Breaker Morant (bawled my eyes out in this movie), Rabbit Proof Fence, Muriel’s Wedding, The Castle, and Strictly Ballroom. A recent movie with Delta Goodrem, Love Is in the Air. For Children’s movies, try Babe or Oddball. Some older ones also include Picnic at Hanging Rock, or My Brilliant Career or maybe Storm Boy.
A road trip movie I really enjoyed is "Last Cab to Darwin". Nothing futuristic or flashy, but a good story, well acted, and shows a slice of Australia.
Some of mine are : The Dry( Eric Bana) , Gallipoli, Breaker Morant, Danger Close , Mad Max 1 & 2 , Crocodile Dundee, Beneath Hill 60 , Odd angry Shot, Rabbit Proof Fence, Wolf Creek.

I love your channel, but I'm so tired of Americans giving out information about Australia. Don't get me wrong, they are good movies, but what about Babe, Rabbit Proof Fence, Strictly Ballroom, The Castle, The Dish, Muriel's Wedding, The Dressmaker, Little Fish, Bran Nue Day. I could go on, but I think you get the drift. 😊
And it had almost every known Australian actor in it, funnily enough, the movie that helped get Mad Max made - Stone, had almost all of them in it too. Including our favourites - Immorten Joe/Toecutter/Toad. And Vince Gil as Dr Death/Nightrider… 😉
I love #9 Predestination. The twists in that movie are insane. Definitely a must watch if you want to see something very, very different and very well written. Also shout out to Dark City. Got that on DVD. Love it. Mad Max 2 is great. Personally I like Thunderdome with Tina Turner, Mad Max 3, though I'd take 2. Better than the modern version (though Fury Road was acceptable).
I think it turned up on netflix at one time, was a surprisingly good sci-fi that I'd never heard of before. I wonder how many other great movies go completely unnoticed.
I loved Red Dog! I found it so funny, but it also broke my heart. I'm glad I watched it but could never watch it again. I don't watch any animal movies now, since that one. I'm too much of a softie or a wimp.
Mad Max, Crocodile Dundee, Australia, Chopper, The Castle, Two Hands, Animal Kingdom, Shine, Prasilla Queen of the Dessert and Gallipoli are true Aussie classics. Candy, Malcolm, Romper Stomper, and The big steal are pretty good too. Underbelly season 1 is pure crime drama gold. The Tourist is an Australian/British produced crime drama. Recently watched the 2nd season. Worth a watch. The Wolf Creek movies and TV shows are pretty good outback horror style. 2nd Mad Max is better. The biggest Aussie Movie of all time is Crocodile Dundee. So good. 1 & 2 are movies I will watch forever. The best comedy is The Castle. They made an edited for American audiences version too. Watch the Australian version, if you can. Some words were changed to American english. Aparently we speak a little differently in Oz. The Castle and Crocodile Dundee are Australian national treasures. Both very different yet both extremely Aussie. One big budget and one not so big budget. Guess which is which.
Thankyou for showing this. I'm an Australian, living in the Australian outback and in my 50's. I haven't seen most of these films, I have several SVOD's such as Paramount, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc, to the point where I'm swamped with options and alas the forest does get lost in the trees. I've seen movies from the era of 'going to the cinemas' being a special treat for the family, such as with 'PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT' or 'THE WATER BOY', much of which was filmed near my home in Quorn, Flinders Ranges of South Australia. Much of 'WOLF CREEK' was also filmed near the family sheep station at Parachilna, also in the Flinders Ranges of the South Australian outback. I digress from my points though which were to say thankyou for showing me several movies worth looking for and stating that sometimes too many options can be a bad thing as it's easy to miss the pebble in the rocks.
Baz Luhrmann also directed Elvis, Australia, Strictly Ballroom and The Great Gatsby. The crime drama you might be thinking of could be Blue Murder, Underbelly or Mr Inbetween. They're all excellent!
Haha! A lot of those are huge movies. Animal Kingdom should be a lot higher up the list and saying you haven't heard of it really says a lot. Shine had 7 Oscar nominations and Rush won best actor. Talk to Me was being talked about a lot last year and won many awards, Dark City was a cult hit and one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. I enjoyed Predestination too but I was surprised to see it in this list. Upgrade is the only one I haven't seen. This is anything but a terrible list.
@@troys1101 I agree, I'm going looking for a for Dark City, Pre-destination and Upgrade, they all look quite good. But I can see what people here are talking about, there's some massive Aussie Movies that should be on this list but aren't. Especially The Castle.
No top 10 Australian films is complete without Picnic at Hanging Rock. Gallipoli should also be on this list. I'd also have Breaker Morant. Again, we have a list of "commercial films" as opposed to what are actually the best films.
Baz Luhrman did what is called 'The Red Curtain Trilogy' - Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge. Bran Nu Dae, Playing Beattie Bow, Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Man from Snowy River 1 and 2, Black Rock. These are some great Aussie movies.
Wow! No Chopper, Romper Stomper, Gallipoli, The Year of Living Dangerously, Breaker Morant, Picnic At Hanging Rock, Muriel's Wedding. I understand these things are subjective but all seven of these films are fine pieces of work in their own way.
Idiot Box, Wake In Fright, Razorback, Turkey Shoot, Patrick, Body Melt, Bad Boy Bubby, The Loved Ones, Ribspreader, Ghosts Of The Civil Dead. 10 Aussie classics 😁👍
Out of these TOP ten I have only watched one, "Pricilla Queen of the Desert". I have heard of a couple of others and have watched Mas Max 1. As in the comment below "The Dish" and "The Castle" are both great Aussie movies. Also "Australia" with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, shows life in early outback Australia very well, plus the Bombing of Darwin during WW2. Not to forget "Crocodile Dundee", "Storm Boy", and "Rabit Proof Fence", all fantastic films.
Yes Mad Max is Australian and Mel grew up in Australia from the time he was 10 until he was an adult. Born in New York. He had a very broad Aussie accent and if you watch the movie Lethal Weapon 1 you can hear it. His grandmother was Australian.
Most of the Mad Max movies were filmed in Australia. The exception was Fury Road which was filmed in Namibia because unexpected rain had made the Australian desert too green. Much of the filming of both the Mad Max movies and Priscilla Queen of the Desert was done around and in the town of Broken Hill in far West NSW. The town took the movie to heart and every year put on the ‘Broken Heel’ festival which was a scream.
Left out heaps more Australian movies... "the Matrix".. "Australia" .. "crocodile Dundee".. and "Babe"... just to name just a few... I also think ..the first "mad max" was the best
Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2, The Castle, The Dish (satellite dish), Babe, Charlie & Boots, Gallipoli (WW1 -Anzacs) Phar Lap (Melbourne Cup Horse), The Man From Snowy River. Try to watch The Castle first - iconic Aussie caricatures - my family had a pool room and a hairdresser … it’s all about “The Vibe”😂, Great line “Suffer in ya Jocks!” Enjoy!
Mad Max is Numero Uno with true Aussie diehards, last of the V8's Mate. My only problem with Max is he should of been driving the HQ. No bloody Australian should be seen dead driving a Ford in a movie. Mate if you are serious about really knowing an Australian, watch The Castle. It explains us perfectly. Bloody close to our best ever flick. Rusty isn't too shaby in Romper Stomper as well. If you want to check out New Zealand you could start with Once We Were Warriors. Powerfull movie.
Here is a little known movie fact The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) is considered the world's first feature-length film and the first Australian feature film. to pick My 10 favourite Australian films "Malcom", "Salute of the Jugger", "Their a Weird Mob", "Hercules Returns", "Young Einstein". "The Dish", "Midnight Spares", "Crackerjack", "The Castle", "Kenny" There's ten really good Aussie movies but there are a lot more some are just too Aussie "Alvin Purple" or "Ginger Megs" others are Ozsplotation classics Like "The man from Hong Kong", "The Cars that Ate Paris" or "Turkey Shoot"
Hercules Returns is absolutely hilarious!! 😅😅 I remember watching that over and over as kids with my sister. Some great movies you have listed that definitely should have been mentioned in the video 👍🙂
Mad Max 2 was different from the original. The original was a pre- apocalyptic biker crime and revenge drama that had him going toward the wastelands at the end. Max was Main Force Patrol, MFP, a cop...
So many better movies than half of the obscure and little known ones in this video!! All of the ones already mentioned plus heaps of horrors like SAW, Insidious, Razorback, Babadook, Wolf Creek.
I remember hearing about 'Upgrade' whilst watching a YT channel that listed underrated Sci-Fi movies. It looked interesting, so I purchased a DVD of it, as no streaming service seemed to be showing it. It's a GREAT sci-fi movie, plus it's Australia! 👍🏻🇦🇺🍻
‘The castle’ would be my favourite. Predestination is a mind bender, you have to have one of those minds that can think on different levels, many of my friends could not get their heads around it, but I found it fascinating.
I reckon if you asked Australians for their favourite Oz movies you would get a very different lot of choices . AI is very misleading and weird So many other loved movies not mentioned
There are so many Australian movies...those you showed are all good...there are manu others like The Proposition and The Castle, Last Cab to Darwin. I do love Dark City though.
"They are a weird mob" is great and while " a town like alice" was made in great brittian, it is brilliant. Many people could not watch it because of the pain during war being depicted, but the finale is fantastic.
Red Dog, The Man from Snowy River & Phar Lap too! Kid friendly movies. The first & last are true stories, the middle one is based on a poem by Banjo Patterson. Also Malcolm is another & The Sum of Us.
The Proposition, Breaker Morant, Wake In Fright, Walkabout, The Chant Of Jimmie Blacksmith, The Castle, Crocodile Dundee, On The Beach, Sampson And Delilah and Animal Kingdom.
some good Australian movies include: The Shiralee, The Dish, The Castle, Phar Lap, Sirens and Sleeping Beauty is an interesting one on the fringes. favourite Aussie budget movies include: Crackerjack, Honourable Wally Norman
Shine is the stand out movie in these. Love the movie and it is based on the life of David Helfgott (David as a young man is played by Noah Taylor and as an adult he is played by Geoffrey Rush). Brilliant movie about an interesting Aussie pianist and his affliction.
"Two Hands" is a very underrated Australian movie You get raw talent of young Heath Leadger. For Sydney spiders the movie is a gem, it's a must if you grew up in Inner West and Western Sydney.

Another A1 list, not sure what the creators classed as Australian.. great Aussire movies include gallipoli, picnic at hanging rock, muriels wedding..some great aussie directors have directed classics like, master and commander, the truman show, paradise road, Elvis, Babe and many more
The Story of the Kelly Gang On Boxing Day 1906 The Story of the Kelly Gang opened at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne. It was the first multi-reel, feature-length film ever produced in the world. The film caused controversy by presenting the Kelly gang sympathetically.
"Malcolm" "The Dish" "The Castle" "Muriel's Wedding" "Babe" "The Dressmaker" "Last Cab to Darwin"

The original Mad Max was the best, gritty with some great character actors before Hollyweird got their dirty fingers on the franchise.
Ken Oath, and it had a HQ. lol
@@Aussie-63 Um, XB Falcon, though I would have preferred a HQ
@@carpecervisiam9366 Yeah I know n GTHO, but in respect to Brock I just can't say it. Me HQ too, just a red one
And it had almost every known Australian actor in it, funnily enough, the movie that helped get Mad Max made - Stone, had almost all of them in it too. Including our favourites - Immorten Joe/Toecutter/Toad. And Vince Gil as Dr Death/Nightrider… 😉
@@carpecervisiam9366"Nightrider's Monaro", the car all the cop Falcons were chasing in the first chase was a HQ.
I also highly recommend 'They're A Weird Mob' (1968), 'Wake in Fright' (1971), 'Walkabout' (1971), ''Don's Party' (1976), 'Gallipoli' (1981), 'Ghosts ...of the Civil Dead' (1988), 'Bad Boy Bubby' (1993), 'Floating Life' (1996), 'Lantana' (2001), 'The Babadook' (2014).
yes some one remembers weird mob
Moulin Rouge, Romeo & Juliet, Strictly Ballroom are what Baz Luhrmann has called his 'Red Curtain Trilogy'.
Am surprised Babe didn't make the list, also Baz Luhrman's latest movie on Elvis.
Well its about elvis its not really an Australian movie is it
I love #9 Predestination.
Great film
I think it turned up on netflix at one time, was a surprisingly good sci-fi that I'd never heard of before. I wonder how many other great movies go completely unnoticed.
Yes to Pre, Yes to Dark . I have to say 1 just because of the HQ. It's a Brock thing. 🙂🦁🦘
Fury Road sucked IMO. Nothing happened and it is considered the greatest of them all. A masterpiece. How can this be? Mad Max 2 is the best.
I've seen Dark City 4 times
I’m an Aussie and I haven’t heard of half of these but they do look good
'Two Hands' Heath Ledger
'Little Fish' Cate Blanchett
BTW.. for a family friendly , fun, hard hitting film... (great for kids AND Adults) I Truly suggest you see "Red Dog"
Good call again. Malcome n The Big Steel HM's Too.
I loved Red Dog! I found it so funny, but it also broke my heart. I'm glad I watched it but could never watch it again. I don't watch any animal movies now, since that one. I'm too much of a softie or a wimp.
@@Aussie-63 Malcom was awesome!
@@Coooeee Not as sad as when Ossie died. I loved that Ostrich
@@Aussie-63 haha
Another good one sort of in the outback with Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth is. The dressmaker .
The movies was lovely. Ending was a bit of a shock
Upright is fantastic short series, both seasons are great, so funny.
Memento is a psychological thriller.
awesome but not Australian, star is, movie not.
Ten movies, I’ve only heard of five and I’ve only seen one, Rabbit Proof Fence.
Where have you been Jeni. Oodnadatta. Please don't say you don't know Maxy. You will break my heart. 🦘
Ten movies picked at random by AI and then voiced by AI.
I'm surprised half of them weren't Austrian.
The narration is done by AI because the mispronunciations are too frequent to be read by a human, eg “progidy” - there’s no such word!
I actually had the Jack Irish series in mind, but I think that was more recent.
No one has heard of 10, 9, 8, 5, 4 and 3. I’ve got no idea what metric they used to judge it, what a f ing terrible list.
Correct. You picked the failures.
@@troys1101 Still not the Top 10 Australian Movies EVER... shit attempt
@@troys1101 I agree, I'm going looking for a for Dark City, Pre-destination and Upgrade, they all look quite good. But I can see what people here are talking about, there's some massive Aussie Movies that should be on this list but aren't. Especially The Castle.
I think it some stupid A.I. commentary and was so bad, it was not funny.
Candy is a hard watch but Heath Ledger is really good
haven't heard of half of these, so many movies that were left off that should be there
No top 10 Australian films is complete without Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Priscilla Queen of the Desert was a brillianr Australian film that won acclaim all around the world. A must see.
The original Mad Max was the best of the three original mad Max movies. Another good Australian movie is Midnite Spares from the early 80's.
Silverton pub and town was used a bit. And the Opal hotel in Andamooka used to have a few of the Mad Max 2 vehicles.
@@Lee-cc9jf Silverton also has a Mad Max museum. I can remember being held up at the Mundi Mundi lookout while they were sooting a scene.
Left out heaps more Australian movies... "the Matrix".. "Australia" .. "crocodile Dundee".. and "Babe"... just to name just a few... I also think ..the first "mad max" was the best
You know what!! I forgot."The dress maker" .. that was an amazing good movie"
The Matrix was filmed in Australia, but I don't think it's and Australian movie
@jennysmith38 but that's the whole point! It was filmed in Australia
All the Jack Irish Telemovies are worth watching and are darkly funny. As is The Broken Shore, all Peter Temple books.
Shine is quite a good movie, it's about the life of prodigious pianist and composer, David Helfgott. A truly amazingly talented musician.
The last 10 minutes of "Once Were Warriors" brings a chill up my back, and tears to my eyes. Domestic Violence brought wide open.
@MaxHines-mg2rs it,s a tough watch. I couldn't forgive old mate until aquaman lol. Take care Maxi
Rabbit Proof Fence and The Tracker are worth watching to get some background on the impact of colonization on the indigenous Australians.
Bad Boy Bubby
Mad Max 1. Love your enthusiasm 😊
‘The castle’ would be my favourite.
Predestination is a mind bender, you have to have one of those minds that can think on different levels, many of my friends could not get their heads around it, but I found it fascinating.
Where is 'The Castle' or 'Paper Planes'. two absolute classics i thought we be top 10 easily
and weird mob with nino cullotta
I reckon if you asked Australians for their favourite Oz movies you would get a very different lot of choices .
AI is very misleading and weird So many other loved movies not mentioned
The closest comparison to Mad Max and Mad Max 2, is Alien and Aliens. Both the original and the sequel are AMAZING, but very different in tone.
A great road movie is Charlie and Boots.
"The Castle", "Tim", "Razor Back", "Crock Dundee", "Young Einstein".
Animal Kingdom is such a good Aussie movie, stellar cast.
"The Interview" and "Death in Brunswick" both deserve to be on this list.
The best Mad Max movies are the first and second. Both have Mel Gibson as Max. Gritty under budgeted movies that are phenomenal.
Gettin Square. Awesome movie
Yes, I forgot about this one. Hilarious! 👍🏻🍻
some good Australian movies include: The Shiralee, The Dish, The Castle, Phar Lap, Sirens and Sleeping Beauty is an interesting one on the fringes.
favourite Aussie budget movies include: Crackerjack, Honourable Wally Norman
I had forgotten the shiralee. It was great.
Mad Max original is by far the best of the franchise
Pricilla Queen of the Desert was a big hit, when it came out.
Great reaction vids mate😊 G'day from Perth WA.
Mad Max 2 is way better than the first. Of course, I may be biased as villain Wez was played by my father in law, Vernon Wells 😉
loved Vernon.
Shine is the stand out movie in these. Love the movie and it is based on the life of David Helfgott (David as a young man is played by Noah Taylor and as an adult he is played by Geoffrey Rush). Brilliant movie about an interesting Aussie pianist and his affliction.
The Sum of Us, Red Dog, The Castle, Rams, Oddball, lots of great films that didn't get a mention
Bad boy bubby A Great cult film mesmerizing
@@elizabethtanith8961 haha
The only ones I am familiar with are: Priscilla, Moulin Rouge, Shine, Mad Max 2, Rabbit Proof Fence.
"The Last Wave" , "Walkabout", "Wolf Creek".
"Two Hands" is a very underrated Australian movie
You get raw talent of young Heath Leadger. For Sydney spiders the movie is a gem, it's a must if you grew up in Inner West and Western Sydney.
Upgrade was great. It explored some really interesting ideas, and seeing futuristic Melbourne is trippy af
I highly recommend predestination, well written story and great cinematography, the plot twist at the end is worth waiting for.
Love your videos, Baz Lehman is from Australia, when Priscilla cane out , America had made one nearly the same they were so upset that ours came out first, theres flopped ours didn't.
Watching from Australia 🌏🌏🦘🦘
Their is so much gold in the comments... Im not sure many have heard of the films in the video (I haven't heard of most).... Here are some to look at...> Romper Stomper. >Lantana. >Mad Max. >Wake in Fright. >Fortress. >Gallipoli. >Two Hands. >Snowtown. >Wolf Creek. >Man from Snowy River. >Van Diemen's Land. >Nitram. >Animal Kingdom (understand that made the list). >Malcolm. >Bad Boy Bubby. >Ned Kelly. >Sunday Too Far Away. >Picnic at Hangin Rock. >Chopper (as you said)..... so many more... that list in the film was not really informed...
>Puberty Blues. > Elvis > Gold... happy viewing...

Animal Kingdom Jackie Weaver Australian born won an Oscar for best actress.
Jackie was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Melissa Leo won for The Fighter

The Story of the Kelly Gang
On Boxing Day 1906 The Story of the Kelly Gang opened at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne. It was the first multi-reel, feature-length film ever produced in the world. The film caused controversy by presenting the Kelly gang sympathetically.
