    Dennerle Scaper's Flow: geni.us/LUcx
    Cheap mesh media bags (small): geni.us/DtoexHC
    Foams and Biohome Ultimate: www.filterpro.co.uk
    (FilterPro site has links to suppliers in other countries)
    The Dennerle scaper's flow HOB / canister filter is a really interesting design which offers a decent provision for both mechanical and biological filtration. Trays are really easy to set up with alternative media / foams and they fit together very securely to eliminate bypass.
    The top media tray holds around 550g of Biogravel so is really suited to normally stocked tanks of around 60 litres (16 US gallons) or heavily stocked tanks of around 30 litres (8 US gallons) if you want to achieve a full cycle. If you are using this on a well planted tank you could achieve a full cycle in 100 litres+
    A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
    Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
    (1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
    (1kg = 2.2 lbs)
    Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
    Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
    Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
    Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
    Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres
    You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat.
    Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium.

    360 liters is exactly 95.1019 gallons so not too bad. Flow rate isn't everything. I like reliable, quiet filters that hold a decent amount of bio media not necessarily in that order so I orderd this filter for my 29 gallon tank. It looks more practical than a regular cannister filter that sits on the floor for a small tank and I hate hob filters. They all suck, I'm surprised there isn't more hybrid filters available. The Allpond Solutions filters looks like a winner especially for the price, but I can't get it in Detroit so I'm going with the Scapa Flow

    I was impressed with this filter when Richard showed us how to Pimp it. He was also impressed with it. I checked it out at the time and thought it was a bit expensive for my shrimp tank as I was using sponge filters. I then decided to re-scape it. Sponge filters can be good but they are ugly. After looking at other options I invested in a Dennerle Scapers Flow and I am more than satisfied. It just has a feeling of quality. Most importantly the spare parts are readily available. I replaced the media that came with it for some seeded Biogravel that was in the canister. My tank is a custom 42 litre.

    • @pondguru

      The bottom tray takes water in through the whole of the bottom so water is drawn in through the foams more or less equally. The same is true for the media tray.

    • @metallixro
      @metallixro 3 года назад

      Two years late but have you found out the answer for this filter ? :)

    • @Khans0120
      @Khans0120 2 года назад

      It will start up again because all the water that is in the canister, remains there when it is not receiving power. The electric pump has to fight gravity to push the water up and out, so without it getting power the water will just sit there in the canister once it is already inside

  • @craigathonian
    @craigathonian 8 месяцев назад

    Thanks for a great demo, but most of all, showing the design. Have you tested this for an electrical outage scenario ? { i was disappointed with Fluvals HOB, where after the electricity resumed, it ran dry for hours.} With this Dennerle offering i'm scratching my head with the quality of water flow direction...which looks zero. Yes it has a pump, but once the water enters the only directing element of the unit, the top tray... it's a free for all. It has stackable rooms, but no direction for maximization of the water flow through filter media. Knowing water takes the path of least resistance, the first stage sponge will only have the top surface utilized. With the design engineering as is, each tray having a center dividing wall would have fixed this weakness. I'm looking for a filter that has ease of cleaning, which this looked like it has, but it's just not there yet.

    • @ThousandYardStare
      @ThousandYardStare 8 месяцев назад

      (my other channel) I don't generally run the filters in this video series since they are owned by other people (viewers) but I'd expect that most HOB filters will have similar problems if the power goes off.
      An external canister filter will just kick back into action when the power is restored but getting the HOB going again could be a different story.

    i would be tempted to put tubes on to make the inlet and outlet further apart, with the inlet going to one end so its near the bottom and the outlet so it had a spray bar on to the other end of the tank, that way it would create a flow in the tank, if that would be possible

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      I think the idea is that the outlet is at water level so scoots water along the surface but I would like to see an option to increase the length of the inlet too - there may be that option but sometimes when people send filters I don't get all the parts - I couldn't see anything on the box or instructions about an extended intake pipe though.

    • @ice1824
      @ice1824 6 лет назад

      the cheapest one i found on ebay is £68.99 which i think is a bit steep for the size of it, dont think my canister filter cost that and it has a uv light built in, can buy spray bars and inlet tubes and shrimp filters etc for them on ebay so would imagine you would be able to do the same for the Dennerle Scaper's Flow HOB Canister Filter, all you need to know is the pipe size........ always enjoy your videos by the way

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      Yes, it is quite a passive filter but would definitely keep water clear and healthy in a planted lightly stocked tank - it's not really one for a full-on fish tank though as a standard canister would have more draw and flow to keep water clean. It would have more capacity for media too but it's horses for courses.

    Using the Biohome Ultimate media... Can we achieve 'full cycle' including Nitratre removal when putting the Biohome into a high flow filters such as this or other high flow HOB filters? Or is it better to use Biohome only in low flow areas of filters or tanks to achieve Nitrate removal?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      A low flow will encourage a more de-oxygenated water flow and therefore promote a greater proportion of anaerobic bacteria but the biohome will still support anaerobic bacteria in tiny pockets all through its structure in any flow, even a fast flowing highly oxygenated shower filter or fast flowing canister - recommended amounts to use are found in the video description and pinned comment of the majority of the videos in this series and also on the Q&A page of the FilterPro website www.filterpro.co.uk where there is lots of other useful information.

    • @MikeC-mf7dv
      @MikeC-mf7dv 6 лет назад

      Great. I guess it would also make sense to use the 'low flow' lever that many HOB filters have. My Fluval HOB filter has this.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 лет назад

      @@MikeC-mf7dv Yes the lower the flow, the more the bacteria support will be skewed toward anaerobic and that effect will be enhanced with good quality media - even ceramic rings will support anaerobic bacteria in anaerobic conditions as it is simply a surface for bacteria to grow but the amount will still be minimal compared to good quality good porous media. Combine low flow with good quality media and let the nitrate reduction commence, lol

      As far as putting your hands in water I can't see a problem but if you're injecting them or ingesting them internally I'm not sure what the effect would be (probably not good)

      HOB filters aren't very popular at all in the UK but I'm sure someone will have one to send somewhere as I think they are sold here as Aquaclear.

      Yes it is a real hybrid which takes the useful parts of HOB and canister and uses them to good effect.
