A router without AES. Even the cheapest tv box has AES. Good vid Don.

Did not realize this was the case till I read this comment. I was going to buy the CM4 board just for this router board (which I had purchased when it initially came out) now that the Pi's are bit more readily available. But if this comment is true, I will hold off on getting it till I can confirm one way or another. (and my search so far has not proven it to NOT be the case),
It's unfortunate that online reviewers (Don @NovaspiritTech, @JeffGeerling etc) that I follow closely tend to do only "initial reviews" of such products without follow-up in-depth reviews with capabilities / missing features of such boards. Yes, I understand they have lot going on for one person to manage, so I am not knocking them for that - which is why I appreciate such comments even more. And I should probably learn to wait till in-depth capabilities of such boards are available as well - so that's on me. So, just wanted to thank you for mentioning about the AES encryption! 👍 Learn something new every day.🙂

Need routing performance/benchmark comparisons. Also, your audio is vastly improved compared to past videos...nice work!!

I'm currently using a Pi 4 with a USB Gigabit Ethernet dongle. The 52Pi CM4 Router is a cleaner solution, but I think it would be hard to find a Pi 4 of any format right now. I patiently await a Pi 5 announcement.

Thanks for the great review as always. Any chance you could do a performance test on this board? Curious if it can handle 500 mbps and up on the WAN side and LAN side. A performance comparison with Seeedstudio board would be even better.

What is the orientation of the GPIO pinout?
What GPIO pin is the PWM pin for the fan tied to?
    Thanks!

Nice video as always. I'm shocked you didn't talk more about it's throughput limitations. I love this board, but I wasn't use it as a primary router. I'd use it for on the road or a backup. If your looking for standby power in the event of a power outage then you really want to invest in a UPS along with a generator for your home.

Could you please elaborate more on the throughout limitations?
I just bought this board and it's the first I've seen anyone mention throughout limitations?

@@iamdkk have you ever said something in the comment section from a while back, and then look at it again and thought to yourself "what the heck was I talking about?" Well, that's me right now. I'm very sorry. I really don't know what I was thinking about when I wrote this.
However, I would say if you are planning to use a raspberry Pi for routing purposes to strictly use it for routing only. What I've noticed is that if the CPU is busy doing other tasks the processor can get overwhelmed and could cause some issues with throughput. That really applies to any CPU that being used for multiple purposes in addition to routing.
Sorry for the confusion and thank you for the question. Hack until it hurts. Right?

@@BrianThomas thanks for the reply - I realise the original comment was from a long time ago. I looked in to it a bit and there seem to be 2 areas of concern - excessive interrupt handling on the RTL8111E version vs. maybe a newer revision of the RTL8111, or maybe general thermal throttling issues. I'll add a fan to my setup when it arrives and see how it goes. I also ordered an RTL8111F which looks to be a drop in replacement in case of issues with drivers and interrupts.
Yes, it will be dedicated for this process with OpenWRT with no other "duties".
      Good times!
