Roe is a cluster of unfertilized eggs from a female fish and can be found internally in the ovaries or externally as a released egg mass. Zona radiata externa is the outer membrane of the eggs and is made up of neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides. ZRE's primary function is to attach eggs to the substrate where they are deposited. The ZRE becomes sticky as soon as the egg comes into contact with water or the fertilization medium during spawning. The veil on egg flies mimics the ZRE.
