As a retired field trialer in the states, agree sporting dog, hunters with dogs need to unite with others to defend our right and need to have working dogs. Can't let the euro anti training come here to North America
@@kevinwilliams2524completely agree. And the prominent figures need to step up and speak out. Too many of them don’t want to deal with it because of social media backlash and allow the ignorant people to keep winning small battles which grow and grow into Europes situation.
My grandfather bred German Shepherds for the military before WW2. He told us how he chose puppies, he said he looked at the mother and father and the puppies, if he didn't find any faults, he walked threateningly towards the litter and looked at which puppy was barking and went to the front, without backing down. He then took this. This applied to both the males and the females. He had the best dogs you could imagine, the problem was that very few people could handle them. Unfortunately, after the war he never bred again. The pedigree was never important to him, only the drive, the courage, the intelligence and a straight back, strong but athletic build with a decent height, a straight, long back and the hips at a right angle.
The mother's genetics have the biggest impact on temperament. I love the conversation of drive and the difference in a dog bred for work vs. being a pet. Excellent conversation!
One of the best podcast of heard in a while. Great Insight from Stefan. Lovely stuff Haz. I could watch this a dozen times, this is pure knowledge from wealth of experience and growth
“When you don’t tell your story, someone else tells your story…” Well said Haz I live in a residential neighborhood and part of me wants to not bring the Ecollars and pinch collars out in public view but I do it because I don’t want to “hide” anything. It’s obvious to anyone that can see, my dogs are happy and enjoying life and I have wonderful relationships with them. They’re cared for far better than the pet dogs in my neighborhood that I see around on a regular basis but people still give certain looks when they see me out with my dogs. I’m not certain if it’s them being working breeds or the tools or a combination of both. I’m wanting to buy a German Shepherd puppy within the next few months so I’m shopping around at the moment for the right dog. This particular dog will be a dog that I am not super concerned about sport with but will probably do at least a BH with. What I’m really wanting is just a good, solid, old fashioned GSD dog that will be with me the majority of the time. I’ve had several GSDs over the years but dogs in general seem to be getting too soft of temperament these days. Very good interview!
Do you have a video of the dog (DUTCHIE) over your right shoulder? You said on one of your podcasts Haz that this is the most dominant dangerous dog you rant across. Do you have more videos of this dog? Please and thanks
Anecdotally I see what y’all mean about the mother’s character in puppies, I met my boy’s (GS) mom and dad, the dad was more floofy and nice, the mom had more grit, maybe it was still protectiveness over the puppies, but, my boy reminds me more of her temperament than the fathers, although I only spent a few hours there at the breeders. The father has more red in his mane too, but maybe as my boy gets older I’ll see that too. My boy has never acted like what I thought a puppy would act like..he’s pretty serious, thoughtful, mischievous too..
When you have a complete understanding of dog genetics- 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 💯 thanks for this video! My female is from the bitch's second litter 😉 of an extremely tight breeding 🤫that only produced 3 pups. She's phenomenal & too good for this world 🥰 IYKYK
Stefan's breedings wrecked the back/spine of the GSD's. Not a good breeder if they're crippled at three or four years of age. Now it's prevalent in the working lines.
Hope you have bases for that, because he kept a lot of dogs from his pairings/breedings and they all lived a long life without problem; so if there is a problem probably is environmental and not genetic
@@originalgamesta6268if someone has an answer, they will give it. He doesn’t so he says look it up. It’s as if they think you are obligated to prove their claim.
What other outlet do these high drive dogs have but these type of sports and as police or military dogs. They do not make good house pets so what is the alternative? You see them ending up in shelters or being put down because average people can't handle them. But as usual these type of people love to dictate what to do but they don't have a realistic solution as to what to do with these type of dogs.
Most of the very high drive working line german shepherd dogs ARE specifically bred for and used for military, police, and sport work. They may retire with a handler who gets along with them well of course. But in the case of my working line gsd, she's pretty high drive but she's definitely suitable as a family pet. Just have to be a very active and dedicated owner. Like, I know almost everyone in my neighborhood has dogs, some have several, but most of them NEVER excercise thier dogs. They perhaps take them for a 15 minute potty walk once a day and maybe a dog park jaunt once every couple weeks. If I tried that with my wl gsd, my home would be chewed to bits, my yard would be full of holes, and I'd probably be dog bit to heck 😮. I do the bare minimum of a couple 30 minute walks a day, several obedience training sessions, and several play sessions and my dog is fine 😊.
Interesting discussion. To me, many people get a dog who shouldn't even own a pet so the dog never has its needs met correctly. Then, people choose a breed for either its reputation or looks without knowing ANYTHING about the breed. Lastly, too many people get a "working line breed" .....the rest you understand. I agree you need to know what 'type " of dog you NEED and yes, what training METHOD you feel 'good" using, to get the goals you have for the dog. . GSD are NOT for the first-time owner unless they, like other idiots want to ruin and re-home/give it up after a year.....and we know the that 'discarded" poor dog is now a MESS - intellectually, emotionally and untrained. My current GSD is from a German show line, bred for temperament and low drive. I KNOW that every dog eventually will learn what you want it to learn and yes, some dogs take one hour, others get it in two years but eventually they get it. Because I know what I have and what I want, I can use my training method, which no one needs to agree with, nor with me. I understand the value of current training perspectives and I get into arguments sometimes but at least I understand my dog and he understands me and at the end of the day, he's who I'm going to 'ride out with towards the sunset" . I think that's the most important point - the trust between you and your dog regardless of "job"
Moneys tight! So I’m so appreciative you released this as free content!!
Do you train to military dogs

It's already here, but, like so many other rights in the US, there are enough people fighting to defend it.
I think we need to go a step further and involve everyone at all sports. United front

It can never happen with this constitution
