      Hi, since the classes were back to back as you mentioned, did you have to spend time off work to prepare for the lessons the day after? how much time everyday did you spend to prepare for your classes? Did you have a burnout working at NOVA?

    Here’s advice to everyone thinking of working in Japan: use these major corporate chains to get the visa, but quit ASAP once you’re there. They’re brutally exploitative and will ruin your experience in Japan if you stay there. The ideal situation is to get sponsored by some company that pays you on the lower end in exchange for a light schedule. Then you can amass a bunch of private lessons or part time jobs. This’ll end up giving you a lot more monthly income and more free time than anything you’ll get at a NOVA or AEON.

    The part of the contract that says you cant hang out with students outside of NOVA was actually contested in court and was found unlawful. They still keep it in the contract but they actually don't have legal power to fire you over it or anything. My coworker did a lot of homework on this issue and has battled the executives about it lol. He says the rule isolates him in his small town community and threatens his security, which is kinda true. I personally like the rule cuz it gives me an out when i've got students I need to say no to (I had one student come to my university's campus and try to find me. He also followed me to my bus stop once) But if one of my other students whom I think I could hang out with in a healthy manner invited me somewhere I could go and not be punished by NOVA or anything. You dont have to tell anyone you hung out with someone anyway.

    Hi!! I am currently on the JET Programme and have just been collecting a few ideas for what I want to do after.. I definitely am interested in staying in Japan to work and was wondering how difficult it was in terms of visa status and all of that paperwork and just in general how difficult is it to change jobs in Japan once you choose to leave the JET Programme?

    • @BenjaminWall
      @BenjaminWall  6 лет назад +5

      I’m over in Kobe and unfortunately I’m not too informed about the Chiba area. I’ve had many students at my NOVA that come from that area and they frequently praise that it’s close to Tokyo and Disney without being too metropolitan. The NOVA people in that area will probably be pretty nice as most people who work this job have a pretty laid back disposition I’ve found.

    • @ashleylaflor22
      @ashleylaflor22 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the reply Ben! I've been working in China as a teacher for a public school and they also have a laid back disposition. I was a little worried as to what I was getting myself into heading to Japan with Nova. I guess I'm afraid of giving up this relaxed environment for one that was going to be very intense and very by the book. Well I will have to see where Nova decides to place me.

      Nice! I really want to go teach in Japan too, currently going to community college to get my Associate's in Japanese.
      I'm not really sure what I want to major in exactly, but I'm thinking either engineering or game design (or something like that) since most my all time favorite games come from Japan (Monster hunter/Dark Souls).

    How do you have an apartment that big in Japan!?
    I was on JET and my CO completely screwed me over in numerous ways. We paid top dollar (or yen rather) for apartments that were advertised to locals as a half-way house solution for those moving to other places or those who were desperate. As a result they were extremely expensive for what they were.
    I had a JET nightmare for other reasons - bullying, terrible management, a lot of abusive people at the top micromanaging all of us at the bottom and I ended up quitting. I'm guessing that there will be no chance of me going back to Japan any time soon, but it'd be nice considering I spent 3 years of my life studying Japanese in order to teach over there.

    • @ALeaud
      @ALeaud 5 лет назад +1

      JET is pretty awful. You're much better going to a conversation school. It's much tougher at first because you need to get students but once you get them it's so much easier and some schools won't move you around and you can rent your own apartment nearby which is great. Unfortunately most teaching companies are pretty bad but there are ways around it.

    My comment on Nove English, after perfunctory incomplete research.
    The founder of Nova, connected to at least one cofounder of Aeon English, was convicted of fraud and embezzlement, consequently serving 3 years in prison. He was also kidnapped in Nihonbashi, Japan, for not paying his Yakuza fees.
    Nova closed temporarily in 2007, failing to pay its teachers. It reopened due to a loan. Last week, it made the news again for forcing teachers to risk
    Coronavirus Covid 19 infections by working in unsanitary conditions and also penalizing teachers by deducting from salaries, for students who canceled classes.
    Nova English is a company for the inexperienced, unqualified, a rogue rag tag of misfits desperately seeking some modicum of respectability under the false title of English teacher😂😂
    Its staff are those possessing sufficent integrity to persist in accumulating a monthly adolescent's allowance from Nova, while simultaneously sacrificing their own integrity in oiling a machinery, which benefits criminals in suits who devalue education and human rights 👍
