Despite all the critiques, this game had some niche mechanics, that made it unique among other souls likes, like charging at the enemy with your shield up staggers them (and breaks some walls), getting shot in the back when you have your shield on your back blocks the shot, stepping on wooden boards while wearing heavy armor will break the boards (and it works for heavily armored enemies too). I certainly had a lot of fun playing through this game back in the days and have a lot of good memories about it. So even though a lot of people call this game bad, I'd say that this game is special. It definitely is special for me and I love it for it.
Honestly, one of the best ideas in this game is the xp multiplier for skipping checkpoints. I would love to have that in a souls game.
The Surge and The Surge 2 both did that, and it made farming feel really good. I highly recommend both of those games. Every boss also has a special way to beat them that nets you a special version of the boss weapon
Really weird they started off with Surge 2 and never made a first title it was a bold choice.
But for real. If you've never played the surge just play the surge 2 it's a substantial upgrade over the first (at least until they give up on designing bosses and copy paste) but disregarding that it's a worthwhile playthrough. Only play the first if you REALLY like the 2nd. Surge 1 kinda sucks 4/10.
@It's Ya Boi Guzma I disagree, I think the Surge is really fun on its own, and I actually prefer it to 2 even though 2 improved on the gameplay in many ways. And the first game has better story/lore to me personally.
@itsyaboiguzma9548 I gotta disagree. The setting and story of The Surge 1 makes it so amazing. I actually prefer 1 over 2 purely because of setting and story. Gameplay is a bit better tho, I will agree
Yeah 1 was definitely watching better than 2. They went all in on parry in the sequel
Every boss has a certain way to kill in order to win their special boss weapon. For example, for the first boss you need to kill him without receiving damage. For the boss in the graveyard I think you have to force the boss to destroy certain shrines. It was a cool system.
Special boss weapon have something like "weapon arts". For example, the special scythe of the graveyard boss impales enemies from distance. Perhaps the most broken power of the game.
i killed the first boss and received the weapon i tough this was just a normal drop
@@davip8683 You have to check the color of the weapon. I dont remember well but special weapons are purple or red.
The "weapon art" of the first boss weapon is the fire attack of the Coiled Sword of DS3.
I remember the only reason I could get through most of the game was with the graveyard bosses weapon
@@miralistheking8882 I understoof the importance of the Graveyard Scythe the moment I found my first Demonic Deceptor. To kill it using melee is just suicide so I cheesed it spamming the weapon art of the scythe.
This is why faith builds are more suited for this game. The scythe scales with faith, and also most of the hammers and staves have faith stats. You can technically one shot enemies with a hammer, and staves has the best combos in the game. Also more faith means more attacks with the Gauntlet.
@juscbhbhuvsdsdvbhjwsdv3843 Well game was inspired by Dark Souls where you can get a boss weapons if you cut it's tail and guess noting in that game explained that it can happen unless you tried something like that ,granted it wasn't a main mechanic for a the majority of the bosses
Lords of the fallen was actually my first souls like game I finished and gave me the confidence to get into the souls series
The only good thing it ever did
It was my first souls-like as well. I played it quite a bit until I heard somebody say that its just a dark souls fake and I was like "wtf is Dark Souls?" haha
That's more praise than this game will ever deserve. I'm surprised it didn't make you wary of the entire genre but good on you.
@It's Ya Boi Guzma not even joking lord of the fallen is my favorite non from Soft souls game. I know it's an unpopular opinion and I'm okay with that. The ideal scenario is to play into the clunkiness and just go full heavy everything even if you can't roll anymore. Then you become so tanks rolling is no longer necessary and you just trade with everything
@Bill Clinton Enjoyer It's a game dawg, nothing objective about liking it or disliking it, it's more "it seems like people didn't like it but I enjoyed it".
Lords of the fallen feels like a game without an art style. It’s like if you put “dark medieval fantasy” into an ai generator.
If someone 10 years ago saw this comment they'd be confused asf.
I love it. ❤️
I loved the art style honestly, especially the equipment design. It's the only thing that kept me playing
Man that kind of design usually puts me off
It reminds me of when I was 10 and thought it was super cool to draw spikey edges on everything.
I wanted to like this game too, but I couldn't make it through 30 minutes without wanting to hurl, the camera shake is the true unbeatable enemy of that game for me, even now just watching makes me sick again
YES!! i couldn't play the game at all because of motion sickness :/
I can't believe they shipped the game without an option to turn the shake down, surely the playtesters must've noticed how bad it is in the first few minutes...
It's not so bad for me that I get sick, but it's just so annoying since it's there all the time. A bit of shake during big hits might be ok if done tastefully, but why in god's name does it sway so much while you're just walking around??
I played this game when it was free on ps plus, I ended up beating the last boss but I hated every second of this game. The only reason I kept playing is because I found out that using the jump attack on the heaviest of weapons was outright broken. It was fast, covered alot of distance and did insane damage so i blasted through the 2nd half of the game.
@@huzaifaniazi5041 Jump attack + the strongest 2 handed sword + best luck rune = final boss dead in a few hits. That's how I got the platinum :D
@@dominikdoom I remember playing this when it first came out and the camera shake didn’t bother me at all. Then I replayed it recently on PC and holy shit, I was so sick I couldn’t do it.
I played this game through NG+3. Loved it, but I understand why it’s hated, too. There is a cool mechanic you missed where if you time your attacks with the “clink” sound of your endurance bar, you can chain attacks for less stamina. Upgrading system is very unique as well. Always love your playthroughs and commentary!
Loved the armors and weapons in this game. I had a lot of fun playing.
I really enjoyed this game back when it came out though there were very few Souls Like options back then.
Yeah bro i thought it was pretty good, i think the issue is people don't really try to adapt to the playstyle of this game and just try to play it like typical dark souls or fast pace hack and slash, this game has a slower paced combat, most times especially with bosses you only really got about a 2 or 3 hit window to deal some damage, you really need to observe enemy attack patterns in order to get good at timing dodges and getting better at combat.
@@wolfstorm5394 you summarized it brilliantly. I 100% agree with you
Exactly. Actually I was lucky to had a conversation with devs and what I’ve learned is that they didn’t want to make a copycat of Dark Souls. They aimed for a more kind of story driven more horror and linear experience with some unique mechanisms, but implement the same interconnected fantasy world that rewards exploring. They specifically wanted the fights to have more medieval felling with heavy armor, shields and swords. The player should feel the weight of their weapon, think of every move and regret badly timed swings. And the magic meant to play a role as an utility more than super power. For that reason it was very difficult to balance everything especially those agile classes that had to be slower than you excepted to not be overpowered against the same slow enemies. Magic has to be slow as well so players would not spam same strong powers and cc enemies. I’m not saying the game is a 10/10 masterpiece and not everything works as they should but in my opinion the title deserves more praise for what has been achieved. Unfortunately game was mostly compared to Dark Souls in the era of Assassins Creed games which had a huge impact of the whole TTP action adventure genre and has changed them forever.
The slow attack animations are the greatest gripe I have with this game. I made it to the end, but I haven't even checked who the last boss is. The camera shake isn't a problem for me as I'm used to it (I love NFS Pro Street and the shaking there in Speed Challenge and Top Speed races is on another level).
as far as i remember from my playthrough of this game, welding the biggest weapon and shild was the best option, because later the enemies have stupint amonunts of health and you need the extra dmg and a shild on you're back bloks and/or denies most enimy attacks.
also armore really mattered to, you're healt gets irrelevant if u don't have the armoe to hold it.
I tried playing this again not too long ago because I actually kind of liked it when it first came out, but after realizing how absolutely awful the camera was I just...couldn't. It's actually insane how bad it is lol
Man, I don't know if prod's suffering feeds me or something, but i couldn't stop laughing at any point during this entire video. What a great game
that's cause you are a cornball cause nothing was that funny
Fantastic video Prod, I hope you will play through the entire game so I won't have to do it myself before playing the new one! Really good job on the editing!
Yes, the game is clunky as hell and it is the only video game to this day that gave me actual motion sickness... but after getting used to it I still enjoyed it, even did multiple playthroughs, trying out the different weapon styles and so on.
Its combat is definitely more methodical and slow-paced, similar to maybe DS2 but once you get the hang of it it plays pretty decently. Also the combo timing mechanic helps make combat more interesting and actually rewards "skill".
Really (cautiously) hyped for the second game, what I heard so far it is going to be amazing gameplay-mechanics-wise. I just hate that they literally named it "THE Lords of the Fallen". I get they do it to remove the first game from public memory but now you always have to distinguish between the "THE" game and the "not THE" game. :D
What I remember about this game is that the first boss was the hardest for me and that shortly after encountering the big shield enemies I discovered either a jumping attack or a sprinting attack that does monster damage and staggers them but you have to get them to either run at you or start their own attack (both cases their shield is "down" meaning your attack will connect) and then you have to interrupt them with your running attack.
Another thing that stuck with me is that somewhere in the middle I discovered a two-handed greatsword weapon archetype that can more or less one shot every enemy in the game with the running attack (spec into it and use scaling weapon upgrades). Best (worst) part is that you can find direct upgrades to this greatsword and can kill the final boss in just a few attacks. I beat the game 3 times (for the platinum trophy) and always used the same strat. Beat the game 3 times and I have no idea how the final boss fight goes. I vaguely remember it being some priest/pope guy turning into a monstrosity and either it destroying me or me destroying it in record time :D
If you manage to see this message, get a shield and run at an enemy while holding block and you'll shield bash them, usually knocking them to the ground or breaking guard.
So yeah, this game doesn't have i-frames on dodges PLUS the weirdest dual wielding combos I've ever seen. You have to press attack buttons IN TIMINGS after the previous attack to make it consume less stamina and combo into another attack. I think it requires some skill and practice, but the clunkiness of the game literally says DON'T, YOU WON'T HAVE PATIENCE TO COMPLETE THE GAME ANYWAYS
This game made me think I have bad taste 😂 everyone says they dropped it after an hour but I beat it like 5 times because I unironically enjoyed the game lmao
yeah, you have bad taste but thats ok
I play it back in the days I don't remember it been that difficult, I felt overpowered most of the time . Maybe because I abused the exp multiplier thing . Just don't rest at bonfires and you will get a like double exp
Haven't laughed this hard in ages, please do more!
This game is what it means to have your eyes sore and brain oozing out of your ears and onto the floor.
I finished this game many years ago, you kind of build up a tolerance to its jankiness, and then realise your over half way through and have to complete it so it doent give you 'Didnt complete it' guilt!
Ahh I remember all the way back when this game out and Prod did a Souls-Like Adventure good times, I hope the new one is good I never played the Clunky Souls so the new one should be good I hope
I remember this game having some pretty cool bosses ultimately
Man, i wanted to play this game so bad bc all of the armor looked so SICK, but it was so sick, in fact, that i can't play more than 40m without wanting to throw up bc of the shakes.
I completed this game once and have no intention of ever playing it again all I remember is I used a sword called bloodlust that got stronger the more enemies I killed with it
Hey prod , you're really my favourite person on this platform. I think you're so funny and kind and I love your vids mate keep up the amazing work .
Yeah, I remember the clunk of it and it felt like a chore to finish. Was so glad they worked out a lot of the kinks with The Surge, and it felt even better in Surge 2. Yeah, I love those games.
i played this game tripping balls and everytime ive watched it i think im having flashbacks but the game actually just looks like that lol
I am very happy about the second part coming.
I realy enjoyed the first one.
this is really weird souls like i remember putting everything into strenght to a point i was one shoting everything and late game bosses were dead in 2 maybe 3 hits.
It is not that easy... You were probably only lucky with weapon choice... There is a diminishing effect on each weapon depending on it's basic stat use.
I like the idea of crushing boss' armor. It's very cool to see how he drops pieces of his armor and then drops shield and do dualwield
I remember playing this as a kid and somehow beating it, I don’t think I could pull that off again though
You can charge enemies with you shield. I think it's the only reliable guard break for the big guys with shields.
I remember getting a platinum trophy in this game, it was a bit clunky but i enjoyed some for the systems it had and overall thought it was not a bad game.
Thanks lol. Looking good to the new one, but wasn't replaying this🤣
5:53 The First Warden: You fool I have been trained your Spinning Arts by Malenia, Blade of Miquella and the Dancer of the Boreal Valley.
I too was going through this game coming, that man-tree-ghost-thing is right
Prod prepping himself for a future sponsored stream at the start there.
I didn't realize the Lords of the Fallen game you saw commercials for with the guy using a lantern and a zweihander was the same company.
I remember playing before the launch patch and not being able to really progress due to just straight up broken mechanics and maps - then after, and playing with... a spear or something? And the heaviest armor I could find since the dodges were garbage. Just facetanked everything.
I actually finished this game yesterday and liked it much more than I expected. Sure, I had to get used to slow attack animations and camera shake, but after a while it just didn't bother me much. As for those shield enemies, you need to wait till they charge on you and then use jump attack (forward+R2) in the right moment. And you can actually break their guard, you just need more powerfull weapon (kicking is mostly useless).
I subbed, as my first request I demand a full playthrough. I rewatched 11:20 5 times haha... God I remember actually completeing this game, young me had a lot more patients.
I remember using twin axes as backstab was absolutely OP. Because each backstab as a different damage multiplier, ofc. And the worshiper boss... omg
This game is the only game that ever made me feel like I was getting motion sickness
I remember that I had.... an okay time with this game when I as playing as a rogue. Later I tried replaying it as a cleric and gave up after the fourth boss. It got even slower with medium armor.
Can't believe the fact that Cookie turned Prod into a crab entity.
If you play anymore, just use a strength build with heavy armour. Makes it so much easier.
Clunky Souls!, i remember playing this on PS4 when it came out, takes some getting used to but in the end i really enjoyed it, it's like old school RPG where you just put on your strongest heaviest armor and weapons to become one hell of a unit!
I think the best way to play this game is not to fight against, but to embrace, the clunk.
Grab the heaviest armor and the biggest weapon and go full unga bunga.
Totally with you! I don't even know why I bothered rolling or dodging. Just bonk em as much as you can, as hard as you can.
@@vsGoliath96 Grab the spell that stops stamina loss for a time and the bonking never ends
This video was so freaking funny throughout the whole thing xD my god
5:55 honestly, what even the fuck is this move 😂. What were they going for here 💀
I am honestly bewildered by amount of commenters did enjoyed this game.
It is hard for me to see anything good in it - oneshots, lack of defensive options, inability to stagger opponents, at some parts of the video I can hardly see what is going on.
Not to say that souls games are flawless, but they allow player to triumph over opponent, while here it is just a slog.
I'm one of the few people who seemed to enjoy this I liked the boss challenges, The armor was great and so where the weapons. The equipment load was way too harsh though and yes the screenshake.
I remember that this was actually pretty good when you got used to it and didnt try to play it like Dark Souls, or thought about it as basically Dark Souls with Fat Rolls in terms of Speed and missing i-Frames on rolls.
So yeah I actually liked it
I may be in the minority here but I didn’t mind this game at all. Is it like Nioh? Not at all, but I liked the clunkiness at least for a strength-focused build like I did. I got the platinum so I played it through a few times, I give it like a 6.5/10
I remember liking the staff/polearm moveset in this game, quick enough and it deals decent dmg
When i 1st got a ps4 i got this game with it and it was all i had to play, i clocked it 3 times with all classes. I remember some of the enemies being obnoxious with their tracking. I hope the new lotf is good
Not trying to brag but I was probably one of the few people that fully beat this game, and I gotta say, it doesn't get any better. You learn to master the clunk or are consumed by it.
Crazy to me to see such a souls borne veteran like yourself, getting rinsed.
Well this is certainly the fastest I've ever been to a Prod video
Thank you for this, I was planning to buy this game to compare between the games but after seeing this….. HAHAHA!
I KNEW IT! PROD WAS A MEMBER OF THE CRAB PEOPLE ALL ALONG!
May I recommend to try Little Witch Nobeta? You played it a few years ago, but it was in early access. The full game is out now.
This game also shares that similar annoying trait of DS2 where nearly every enemy is armored so most attacks quietly “tink” on contact instead of giving a real meaty indicator you landed a hit.
lord of the clunckyness
No matter how many times I see it, the huge, hulking First Warden doing that elaborate sword spinning move never not looks dumb 😂
Ngl reminds me of elden ring infinite combos
Love you Prod
Haven’t played this game in years. I remember loving it though. Not sure why.
i stuck through this game
beat it 3 times in fact
it never gets better lmao
My playthrough of this game back then was just spamming that assasin magic skill (the one in the video) and run away until it recharge. 10/10 game would recommend.
I played Lords of the fallen for a bit, I clearly remember seeing that animation (5:55) and it looked so bad I just couldn't continue. I mean if the first boss looks like that, how bad are the later bosses going to be?
Haven't touched the game since.
prod evolved to a point where this is no longer a walkthrough but straight up stand up comedy refined with flawless gameplay montage
you evolved into a 🥩 rider
I actually really liked this game. It was short and definitely had issues but the world and gameplay and character customization was fun and I enjoyed it for the 20-30 hours it took to beat it once.
Oh god that first boss, i remember playing it first time, you get legendery version of bosses weapon if he doesnt hit you. I spent 3 h on him just for that.
This is the Callisto protocol of dark souls games
i have faith the new ones gonna be badass tho. The marketing for it is amazing lmao
30 seconds in, agreed completely, wasn't aware of the new release, went through the game recently and its actually really good, hope you complete a playthrough.
Oh you went rogue...
I think the reason why the shield guys one-shot you because they break your guard, which puts you in a vulnerable state where their increased damage done to you.
I liked this game. But I guess I'm just weird.
You are
@Conquest 💀💀💀
It's a pretty solid souls like. Many people just dislike the weighty movement and combat. Things need to be so fast paced and weightless for the average gamer to enjoy.
@@falcoon_f_zero9450 imo the weight for this game felt a bit too much
I also liked it. First souls like I ever beat
Cookie turned prod into a masochist
This game will always hold a special place in my heart cuz it was the first "souls-like" I played. That being said, when I went to replay it not too long ago. Yeah... it was bad
7:21 I love this conversation.
Maybe it’s just me but…if the devs fine tuned the camera and fixed some of the apparent hit box issues…it wouldn’t be too bad of a game. I’d say it’s about a 7/10. Little bit better than mid but not quite good.
8:56 he kinda looked like dollar store Kratos.
Edit: oh lol
Thank you for your sacrifice
This was my second souls like game I ever played and beat. After the wonderful Dark Souls 3, and before the also wonderful but not quite as much so Dark Souls 2. Extreme whiplash quality spike.
Oh prod if you like the game so far just wait until you get to the twin brothers fight haha that part is painful 🤣
cant wait for the lords of the fallen brooo
I have no intention to replay this game, but I unironically did enjoy the exploration in it. It had some good ideas too. It felt awful to play though, I only enjoyed the dual daggers and the staff to any degree. I forgot it had magic though.
Prod sacrificed himself for our sins.
i played ds1 back in the days and was hyped for Lords of the fallen. it was the first game i have returned back to the store because it was so bad.
I’m glad I saw this cuz I was recently thinking about trying to give this game another go and now I’m completely convinced to never touch it again.
Dude, I love my souls borne games. I've beat them all. I try speed runs in bloodborne all the time still to this day. But.... I actually love this game. I replay it every year. Idk. Maybe I'm crazy but I actually enjoyed this one.
now that i'm seeing it again, it really makes me wonder if fable gave them some inspiration.
Every time you beat the game, you can pick another class to play. So you can get every class archetype after two game clears. The stealth of the rouge, power of the warrior and buffs of the priest you one shot every boss lol
Your welcome, Prod is so polite.
that was my first souls like - then I play Bloodborn and then DS3 ...
HUGE MAN PROD
