The first pilot, taped in September 1973, put more emphasis on shopping for prizes at the behest of NBC boss Lin Bolen, who had commissioned the pilot to boost network daytime ratings among women 18-34. With Chuck Woolery as host and Mike Lawrence as announcer, the show had contestants (all female) who solved Hangman-style puzzles, but their winnings were determined by a vertical mechanical Wheel stopped by Woolery.
*Wheel isn't spinning*
'It's your turn to stop the wheel!'
'Stop!'
*Wheel starts spinning*
And it took taping an entire episode to figure out how stupid that part was?
They spent all their money on the rights to the Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang song
And we are still watching wheel of fortune to this day because of this pilot.
Not really. Merv Griffin hated it.
OpticalJW yeah, pointless pilot
Chuck in the 70's looks a lot like a cross between Elvis Presley and Jay Leno...
Now he's a 45 ass kisser
Chucks asks her if she wants to buy a vowel? She responds "leave me alone? im dying lol
I love how they're just lounging in chairs. The boards were so cute!
The show should been called Stop The Wheel.
Except in Old Valyria where, due to a mistranslation, they call it "Break the Wheel"
More like stop the wheel I want to get off
RUclips, you’ve finally recommended something wholesome yet deafening.
omg.... between the screaming and moaning... starting to understand what "hysterical" used to mean, geez
That lady screaming is hysterical. Like damn, calm down honey. Also, when the wheel stops and then starts back up while it’s still on camera
The music would make you think the grand prize was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
"Do you want to buy a vowel? Maybe you should buy a vowel. I think you should probably buy a vowel. You know you can buy a vowel, right? SOMEBODY PLEASE BUY A VOWEL."
The theme song from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
1:57 That wrong letter buzzer sounded like a "school bell", a "big beep" and a huge "human burping" sound all at once.
family fortunes was the same thing except a fart. and the whammy sound effect from pyl. which did appear in uk. but is unknown if wiped out of existence by the network or not
Game shows were everywhere in the 70's.
I actually like the idea of earning chosen prizes throughout the game. With a different format I think this concept could fly.
This different format and vibe is so surreal to watch now! And lol at how ridiculously excited the contestants are! Thank you for uploading this!
"I'll spin the wheel"
She saw into the future......
georgef551 Yes she did, but a that time the host "who later hosted Wheel of Fortune until replaced by Pat Sajak" said "Okay, we're going to stop the wheel.
I'm just talking about spinning the wheel. Went a bit far there. :)
georgef551 I know what you mean.
This is so damn relaxing to watch and listen to. Such a relaxing environment, contestants were so relaxed and hip.
BAD BIKER BENNY mmm
Like you!
Shoppers' Bazaar? Yeah, this game certainly is bizarre.
“Shoppers’ Bazaar” was the former name before 1974
@@Santiaram ...I am very aware of that. It was a joke.
Wordplay, because "bazaar" sounds like "bizarre", which means strange, and this version of Wheel of Fortune is very different, which can be seen as strange.
Vanna White had just started her junior year in high school back then.
Yes. She was 16 and Pat was 27 in 1973.
Anthony Guarino well he came in 1981
How do the letters appear if there is no Vanna?
Vanna is hiding behind the board. True story. HAHAHA!!!
Background music is "Spinning Wheel" by David Clayton Thomas.
The smallest font in game show history.
I'll take a '74 Firebird today, please!
When she said, “ stop!” I was thinking wheel would stop 🛑 immediately?! 😐
somehow the weirdest part is still the chitty chitty bang bang theme
I like how that first woman naturally said "spin the wheel".
The lady lands on “lose a turn” and Chuck Woolery laughs. Lol
Wheel of Fortune should've kept the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang theme song. "Wheeel...of....FORTUNE! Bang, bang, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang...."
It's interesting that Chuck was the host of this original 1973 pilot and Susan Stafford was the hostess of the two 1974 pilots with Edd Byrnes. It's also interesting that vowels have always and continues to be worth $250.
They play "Spinning Wheel" as a commercial bumper, and the closing credits play "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang." It's so interesting that this original show didn't have a model in front of the puzzle board turning letters. The puzzle board looks like cardboard, similar to the original Jeopardy.
Even with all the bugs, this wasn't half bad. The setup made it look way more intimate, which isn't a bad thing. Remove the audience and it becomes one helluva edge on other game shows of that time.
For those of you saying this looked like 'Press Your Luck', you need to realize this show was done like 4 years before the original iteration 'Second Chance' and 10 years before 'Press Your Luck' came on the air. So maybe it's the other way around?
That has to be the most bizarre game show music ever made...
The wheel clicking whenever it stops is so satisfying.
So glad they improved this show
It's so appropriate that they are playing _Spinning Wheel_ by Blood, Sweat, and Tears.
I love how he asks the women "what does your husband do for a living?"
Should have said, who care he not a contestant .
You would think they'd have the players use a button instead of saying stop.
Happy this turned into Wheel.
The fact that they sometimes end up saying "spin the wheel" is what predicted the later years.
Love the Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang background music at the Beginning. DANG! Chuck Woolery looked like A College Student then.
Jiltedin2007 and the wheel looked old el cheapo!
Three women constantly screaming 😳
I don’t even know where to start with this. The poor sound guy having to listen to these women screaming.
Love the loud enthusiasm. The audience clapping I think is a track. When people tell her to keeping going or stop, I only hear a few voices really close and when the ladies shout, it doesn't sound like a huge area like the screams are bouncing off the walls that are close.
Some of the funniest parts of the ladies' hilarious screaming from this pilot. XD
5:54- "OH NO!!!!!!!"
12:44- "OH NO AND I DON'T KNOW IT!!!!"
13:00- "AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!"
13:36- "AAAHH!!!!"
15:50- "OOOOOOOHHHH"
26:06- "OH I KNOW!!!!!"
Justin Middleton hopefully the audio operator got paid well for his possible hearing damage.
+Nolan Cain LOL i know right, but i have to say hearing these ladies incessantly scream through nearly every part of the game is still pretty funny. XD
@@justinmiddleton8818 it makes me hot!
Loving the incomprehensible use of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' as theme music.
That's an instrumental version of "Spinning Wheel," the Blood, Sweat & Tears song.
+rockland6674 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was played while they were showing the prizes at the beginning. Very odd.
this exquisite 1974 Pontiac Firebird ! 😎
That full length mink coat is worth more than the Firebird
Wow, this version is... *really* different. Pretty interesting, if not too confusing. I liked how the introduced the contestants *and* did a round of gameplay in the opening. I'm not sure what happens if you have two prizes 'paid off' before solving a puzzle, whether you only claim one prize, or all the ones you've covered.
If you have 2 or 3 paid off but haven't got a puzzle they all would be urs if u get a puzzle
10:44, 23:21, and 24:13 We're looking for a thing.
19:36 We're looking for a place.
I just love old episodes or old "versions" of shows, like this one. We get to see a piece of culture from the day as well as learn a bit of TV history.
I find it interesting that they use the same font on the puzzleboard as today. The upright wheel looks funny and when the ladies say "Stop the wheel," I keep expecting them to say "No whammies!" XD
Thank you for posting. This is a nice clear recording with excellent sound. :)
OK, it seems I can't edit. However ...
I realized the font isn't the same but is similar with large serifs. I also find it interesting that they have a clue wedge and used the phone to give a clue privately to one of the contestants - it reminds me of the phone-a-friend from Millionaire. Such a neat episode to see!
These women are going in hysterics every other time they stop the wheel. Hard to believe the show wasn't picked up right away...
They invented Valium for these women.
Stop the Wheel and it stops 10 clicks later 🙄
i loved both pilots!!!
Chuck Woolery was amazing since he always made me laugh every time ever since i grew up with him on Scrabble & Love Connection when i was a kid. Also the enthusiasm from Marilyn/Dawn/Marie they must have very excited when they became the first contestants of the most popular game show on NBC thank you so very much for uploading this :D
i love the german version ;)
but in 2001 the germen version becames / get (?) a ;digital-toutch;- puzzlebord . it was not a puzzleboard. it was a big tv without touchsensors. totaly loveles :( in my playlist Glücksrad u can see it. sorry for the bad english
it's OK, i'll get a chance to see them :)
Anyone else notice the final round thinking music sounds a little familiar?
the first contestant's name was Marilyn.. at the end of the show, the announcer called her Maureen.. which was the 3rd contestant's name.
I love this its so chaotic and raw .
Haha...so weird hearing Blood, Sweat and Tear's 'Spinning Wheel' used! Fitting and yet odd at the same time.
Pay no attention to the man behind the screen! Lol! Those women are scream queens!
Lol these prizes are so posh! An absolutely massive sterling silver, crystal and china set from Tiffany's, a full length mink coat from Bergdorf Goodman, a 5 piece Gucci luggage set, and did I see a bottle of Dom or are my eyes deceiving me?! Holy crap. What in the world happened to gameshow prizes?! :(
Those were just left over props from The Beverly Hillbillies.
No ceramic Dalmatian? I remember that prize and when they had like 75 left it got turned into a service merchandise gift certificate
Would be a bomb of a pilot if the lady didn't win the bonus at the end..
I would suggest watching the second pilot. Closer to the final version.
8:57 - What it's like to for the wheel to stop on "Lose a Turn"!
Amazing how much this game has changed
Wow this is fascinating to watch....I believe that at the time this might have aired ONLY on
O&O NBC stations daytime. I think I saw this pilot during the daytime on WMAQ TV in Chicago way back in 1973 as a child. Amazingly this episode holds up well. It kept my attention!
12:20 “Quickly, or we’ll be into Search For Tomorrow”...which was still on CBS at the time (didn’t move to NBC until 1982)!
Wow... It's a good thing Merv Griffin ironed out all the kinks!
The countdown music played during the "Shopper's Special" segment of this pilot, SHOPPER'S BAZAAR, was the same music that was sometimes played during Charlie O'Donnell's or Jack Clark's prize descriptions on WHEEL OF FORTUNE after a contestant went shopping for prizes following his/her win of a round. On this SHOPPER'S BAZAAR video, that version of the music (perhaps written by Merv Griffin) was more playful. On WHEEL when this music was played, it was played at a different pitch and was a bit somber but had a triumphant finale if it got that far.
"Stop the wheel!" Hahahaha Oh God.
The 1st contestant said she wanted the letter F and F even comes up in the close caption. But Chuck gets it wrong saying/giving the 1st contestant the letter S...
I thought the same thing but I replayed it she does say S. Look at her lips. The audio is just old.
Loved the use of "Spinning Wheel" by Blood, Sweat, & Tears.
Sounds like the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang theme
I'm pretty sure it was at the beginning and ending. In between, when Chuck comes on stage, the song is, "Spinning Wheel", by Blood, Sweat & Tears.
As with the other pilot, every time a contestant says S it sounds like F, but oddly enough the announcer sounds fine.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the irritating sound of the wheel clacking, the women acting like they are all on uppers, the assumption that they are just extensions of their husbands, the chairs, Chuck rushing them to give letters, yelling stop the wheel, the squealing and screaming... this was weird and awful. Who would have ever expected the show to be picked up?
+Sean Lauer I love all the songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but it is just bizarre in this incarnation.
chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a movie from MGM
it's wild how, other than the bonus round in the late 70s, Jeopardy has really only had one major rule change to the actual gameplay in 60 years (locking the buzzers until after the clue's been read starting in Trebek season 2; the only other changes are removing the five-day limit and doing tiebreakers in regular play), while Wheel of Fortune is almost unrecognizable from one decade to the next
Stop the Wheel? It looks like it’s just starting?! Weird
True. Kinda stupid.
Actually, the wheel is constantly turning. When the contestant says "Stop the Wheel", the little clicker drops down, causing the clicking noise, and the wheel starts to slow to a stop.
Based on that I'm surprised it got picked up
15:19 - What it sounds like when the wheel lands on "LOSE A TURN"
this is wild, I remember Chuck woolery and this version of the show.
Never seen that before, but I wish that this show deserves a remake of "Shopper's Bazaar".
+Musicradio77 Television Network Really good idea, HOWEVER, the puzzleboard in this format would put Vanna out of a job.
That's true. it could just be an LED billboard of sorts they'd be using.
Did Marilyn remind anyone else of Julia Louis-Dreyfus? It was almost uncanny at times, IMO.
I think she is an actress. I have seen her on other game shows.
I remember a version that was more like today’s game but had a shopping part when a contestant won the puzzle.
Elessar S that was during the first four or so seasons of the syndicated Wheel of Fortune. The NBC version had that format until its cancellation in 1989. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Gerard Landry, Great, it wasn’t a Dream then! 😂 I’m the only one that remembered it around here!
Yes, that's correct. The early years of the "current" wheel had this. It was called the "showcase" if I'm not mistaken. You had to spend your winnings on prizes from there and if there were an amount left that was insufficient to buy anything from the showcase, you received a gift certificate. You didn't take home cash winnings, like they do today. That came later on.
Roger Bates I kind of miss that. But these days it's all about the money. I'm not necessarily saying that's a bad thing, but I just wish that they brought back the shopping element.
@@RogerBates7 Right. That originally started in 1987 when they a "week of cash" that quickly became the permanent format. The daytime version didn't go all cash until it went to CBS in 1989 (with Bob Goen taking over from Rolf Benirshke, who replaced Pat Sajak on the daytime version) and had much lower cash amounts.
In 1973 the wheel doubled as a kitchen knife sharpener for the take home prizes.
I love the version of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" used as the opening.
i like how the wheel constantly spins; and the contestants stop it.
Pat Sajak started in 1981
Vanna White started in 1982
It looks more like a prelude to The View with these contestants.
And this is why pilots are important. If they tried this for it's public release, Wheel of Fortune wouldn't have lasted 35 minutes, let alone 35 seasons!
That melody playing in the show is the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song!
And then they played Spinnin' Wheel by Blood, Sweat and Tears
They sure didn't try too hard for this first pilot. Everything looks so ridiculously cheap. Thank God they upgraded everything later on!
And the ladies seem like they're overacting. XD Sheesh, ladies, calm down!
And a ceramic cat ... I USED TO LOVE THIS SHOPPING TRIP AS A KID ... I'd laugh so hard ! "YOU HAVE 8000 dollars ...You can buy this bread knife ...would you like the rest on gift certificate or account"
Henry Kissinger. Knew it as soon as I saw the SS.
Me too. 👍👍
I see what you did there^
oh my lord... that screeeeching !!!! Like nails on a chalk board !
Those prizes were fab!
Reminds me of Friends, "Bamboozled." "You've been Bamboozled!!"
Bamboozled made more sense than this version lol
I was thinking the same thing!
We’ve come a long way..
Two more interesting music choices. Bonus round uses "A Time for Tony," later to become a jewelry prize cue on "Wheel of Fortune" and inspiring the think music on "Jeopardy." Closing music is "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
Actually, the Jeopardy! "Think Music" was around since the 60s version of the show.
This pilot is a trainwreck!
Well, it's just an idea of how the show will go for network execs only. They're not shooting for an Emmy.
The announcer sounds like the same guy 😀
They should bring these 3 back for a WOF game show
Are they still alive?
Chuck doesn't seem to age...
Robert Polityka
Chuck Woolery looked like A Very Young College Student Back in 1973.
Bill Carruthers produced and directed. No wonder they stopped the wheel. ;)
FlagDUDE08 So that’s why the players yell “Stop!” on both Second Chance & Press Your Luck🤔
