It’s been my honor to share my story with you all. I’m not a public speaker, just a broken down NYC firefighter! Lol. I tried my best in telling it, my best not to rush, there were so many thoughts that I wanted to convey in a short period of time. We New Yorkers are known to talk pretty fast!! Lol It’s still painful to talk about, all of these years later.
Your responses have been so kind and thoughtful. I am beyond flattered and grateful. When I hear how much that good people appreciate what my friends did on that fateful day, I know that they did not give their lives in vain. They are the heroes!
I wish that I could respond to each of your comments, but I’m a terribly slow typist.
Please know that I am flattered that you would share your own personal, beautiful stories. You have all galvanized my resolve to never stop telling about the great heroes of 9/11/2001, who gave their lives so innocent souls could live on. It was my true honor and privilege to work alongside them.
Wishing you all continued safety, peace and love. Thank you all very, very much! God bless you and may He bless and protect America- niels

Niels, when my brother in law passed away, we spent entire days awaiting the day to come while he battled an aggressive cancer. We had a new baby, and we decided to have a early night and took the baby home from our visit. That night, around 130 am, our daughter woke us up babbling to someone (and she was literally colic and never happy) that wasn’t there. We got the call shortly after that my bro in law lost his battle at 130 am. We FIRMLY believe that he visited his new niece that night before his departure. Don’t let ANYONE tell you different. You are a warrior. Your kiddos are beyond lucky to have you! God bless!

This was by far - the best interview - in so many ways. He mentions the importance of being a parent, a provider, a man with many friends - all through his experience of life. His contribution to humanity, and his love for God, Country, and his fellow man just radiates. He also acknowledges his humility and humanity - at times we are ALL fragile. As a veteran, I salute you Niels. As a man I would want to shake your hand, give you a hug, say "thank you", and then buy you a beer. You have left your mark with your children and this, your personal and intimate story. This longing for a 9/12 scenario seems so out-of-reach at this time. As I was explaining the significance of 9/11 and 9/12 to my teenage sons yesterday. Niels sums it up, love you fellow man - stay away from evil (drugs, negative influences in the media, deception, and the like). As life at times, does NOT make any sense. I also worry so much about this country my friend, and what I have seen in 57 years of life - seems most desperate now.

I was in my first class in middle school. 7th grade science mr somers class. Towards the end of class another teacher came in the room with a weird expression on her face to turn on the news. We as a class just watched a tower partially on fire not understanding what was going on. Going into next period we watched a plane hit the tower. I thought it was a replay from earlier. Teachers started going from class to class. School was totally disrupted. And then we watched one of the towers fall. My teacher started crying. It's all horrific what the first responders went through (& still go through) - but when Niels described those Pass alarms going off on the air tanks of the firefighters beneath the rubble...hearing that sound over & over....I just can't imagine. OMG! that must have been (amongst everything else) Soul Crushing... I'm so glad you are still here Niels - I can only imagine the survivors guilt - but please know you were spared bcse the world & your family needed you!! You are the heart & the spirit of those firefighters who left us that day ❣PS - I remember so clearly those days following 9/11 & how kind & polite everyone was to each other - I could see it on the road while driving & feel it in the air...I wish it didn't take a tragedy to make us come together....I long for us to be compassionate to one another like that again!

This has been the most moving 2 hours of my life.
Never before did I believe that listening to an interview while working would ever draw me to such heightened emotion.
I spend most of my time watching and listening to things as I work a solitary job. I picked this just as another interesting person from this interesting channel. I had listened to a couple interviews earlier yesterday that were very dark and sad, and for whatever reason this guy stood out to me to listen to next.
This man reminds me of all of the good aspects of my own father. I think were they ever to meet that they'd become fast friends.
A lot of things have been covered in this interview that touched me deep in my heart. His explanation at about half an hour through this part two of his chemo haze and his witnessing of the people in his life who had passed and his friend who had passed just as he saw him. Man that rocked me.
I have struggled with the concept of God my entire almost 29 years of life. I've outwardly called myself an atheist, and internally have spent a lot of time silently questioning God. Can he be real? Can any of that stuff be real?
I know I believe in a lot of things that completely disprove all of that.
I grew up with a very toxic relationship with religion, specifically Christianity. I hate it. That has continued into my adult life with my fathers toxic extremism of the religion, and a long list of other examples nobody wants to read about.
That retelling though. Whew. It brought me to tears, and I do not ever ever cry.
It my heart that just gave me the proof of God that I've been looking for.
I hope that this interview will be seen by many more thousands than it has. This life story deserves to be heard by all. Instead of some dumb mr beast challenge video getting 100million views, something like this deserves that light.
Thank you Nelis for telling us your story.

And God bless this country and help Americans be able to unite and have “ conversations, not confrontations”.

I really hope that even though Niel doesn’t do social media I hope he can maybe read some of these comments . I want Niel to know that he is a hero … he represents what we need our men to be. Good fathers , good husbands and good people in general. He epitomises all the qualities that I would want my children to look up to. Hard working and honest, wanting to help people on their worst day. Being there for his firehouse family and his own. Saying all that though , the amount of trauma and psychological suffering that this man and all his fellow firefighters and first responders have been through is unbelievable. I will never be able to imagine what mental anguish and suffering they go through. We as a society need to see what they sacrifice physically mentally and emotionally for their communities. We need to fund programs to help them. He deserves it. They all do! We all need to rise up and be there for our fellow human beings ! The world needs love! That’s why Mark is doing this project … to show people what we all need. God bless you Niel, and thank you Mark for your amazing dedication to this monumental undertaking of a truly needed movement. Your life’s greatest work will be what you are doing! I know you don’t read the comments in your videos and I know why but I hope you know there are people out in this world who see what your trying to achieve and I applaud you and I thank you !

I worked for a client for many years here in our city, St. Louis, repairing homes for folks. and I knew this couple for many years, and watched the woman's mother going through dementia, and Alzheimer's. After a few years she passed away, this daughter was bed ridden with grief, and me in tears, the only thing I could give her for comfort was my feelings. Your mother is now an Angel, if we all lived forever, there would be no Angels for us! Some have to go to the Great Beyond, and are transferred into Angels to help us through our trying times. Your mother is now an Angel. There are many Angels from 911 the melting pot of Angels, created by Evil, but the force of good is still with us every day.

The firehouse by my folks were there when they were fighting and needed a hospitalization, and these men showed up. And they would just happen to drip by every week to see how they were. You have moved me to tears for what you have had to willingly deal with. You and your bros are heroes and have helped us deal with our terrorist act. You are one brave man. Nels, what you lack to see is the exceptional heart and compassion you have. I know your loss is something not many can understand, as a New Yorker and a nurse practitioner, it would be my honor to be able to shake your hand. God did not take you for a reason……….look at what a difference you make in the lives of EVERY SINGLE person who comes into your path for whatever reason. You have left an indelible footprint on the hearts of so many, mine included. Listening to you, seeing the weight you carry on your shoulders with such dignity and feeling your suffering while trying to be strong……. May God continue to heal your broken heart through the many more people you will encounter in your path. Your family should be so proud of you and know that the legacy you leave behind will never be forgotten and will continue to be honored one day by your kids. Thank you for showing us your heart with such humility and for sharing the devastating pieces of your life that are difficult to mend. YOU are exactly what a hero looks like and sounds like. Thank you for your service and for continuing to carry out love, compassion, assistance and care. Don’t let retirement drag you down……. You continue to serve daily! God bless you Nels 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Sir, we are almost exactly the same age, and I was 32 that day. I saw it all on TV from Italy, and I cannot imagine how it was to be there. I came in NYC in 2002, and considered it a duty to come at the WTC place and say a prayer. I found your talk so deep and inspiring that I cannot explain. You are a brave and compassionate guy, full of love and faith. You failed no one, did your best, and all those guide faces of loved ones came to you to tell you so. You don’t need to ask yourself anymore why others died and why you did survive. You were chosen to tell what did happen. This was and is your mission. A harder one, because you had to suffer all pains to be here and talk. But you were chosen just because Someone knew you were strong enough to bear it all. Remember that God never gives us a heavier weight than we can suffer. You were given a huge weight, just because you are so strong. God bless you, have peace, have happy days with your children and wife.
