    Fun fact about One Punch Man. The writer started with a comedy web comic, but he wasn't great at drawing. That's the origin of the derpy faces you see. An amazing artist found the comic and offered to do the visuals while the original writer kept going with the story and the web comic. And now it's a little satire gem :)

    When it comes to sub or dub I always say if it’s good you should watch it in your native language. Unfortunately a lot of English dubs are not good and it makes sense to watch them in Japanese. The only thing I’ll say is that subtitles are often translated weirdly and might not get the message across as well as dubs do.

    • @curlyxcoco
      @curlyxcoco 2 года назад

      that last bit is incredibly false. if you are watching on official cites, sub anime is translated how it’s meant to be. the dubs usually change the script and will sometimes even leave info out which is not good (especially if it’s important to the plot)

    • @OrdinaryCritic
      @OrdinaryCritic 2 года назад +1

      @@curlyxcoco I agree. Who cares about not getting the joke because of language differences. Sub > comedy

    • @creativebeetle
      @creativebeetle 2 года назад +6

      @@curlyxcocoSubtitles are translations too. Plenty of official subs with crappy translations. Even series like AOT have misspelled names and places which are only fixed in later seasons, leaving the early ones uncorrected. Jujutsu Kaisen had some serious subtitle problems too, to the point where a handful of sentences were outright opposite to the intended meaning, and a couple dozen were otherwise difficult to discern.
      Subs can absolutely lose some of the flow and impact of phrases, so neither subs nor dubs are guaranteed to be good or bad.

    • @404schmoozernotfound
      @404schmoozernotfound 2 года назад +6

      @@curlyxcoco this is just wrong. Firstly, just because you do a direct 1 to 1 translation doesnt mean what you;ve translated carries the spirit of the original language. For instance you can translate the english idiom "every dog has its day" perfectly in another language but if the reader doesnt understand the idiom then youve failed at the job of a translator: carrying the meaning from one language to another. Secondly, there are many moving parts when it comes to translating an anime. Sometimes th e creator is involved and works directly with localization teams; more often the translations are outsourced to another company and there is little to no creative input from the creator. Sometimes translations are done in house by people with no formal training or education so you get very stilted or even incorrect translations.
      Lastly, there is a very purist and elitist tone to the way sub only weebs disparage dubs. I understand some dubs can feel corny, but providing a well supported and well done dub is the best way to reach audiences in foreign and underprivileged places. And being able to share the work with many people is typically what the creator wants above petty greivances that purists have such as "bad acting" or "artistic integrity"

    The greatest anime ever is Hunter X Hunter. Amazing masterpiece. If you are reacting to anime, and have not seen it, you really must. I will say it tends to get a bit darker and more twisted as it goes along, so don't be fooled if it seems a bit more for a young audience at the start.

      Most people can get quite a lot out of a good VA's performance, even if they need subtitles to understand the actual words they're saying. If you're not capable of doing that, I'm afraid that's your own deficiency.

    • @JaydenDimaio
      @JaydenDimaio 2 года назад +3

      @@heinrichagrippa5681 John replied without insulting me, so I left it. But you didn't, so I'll come down on you.
      There are a lot of things you miss when you watch something that's not in your native language: accents, tone, syntax, dialect, modality, inflection, pronunciation, emphasis or cadence to name a few.
      So unless you are a *native* speaker of *both* languages you are not in a position to judge if the voice actors performances are good or not.
      As for "most people" , I think you'll find most people in the world will just watch something in the language they speak. If it is only available with subtitles they'll not bother with it.

    • @heinrichagrippa5681
      @heinrichagrippa5681 2 года назад

      @@JaydenDimaio
      Tone, inflection, emphasis, cadence: these are incredibly easy to naturally and immediately notice in any language without even trying. I'm surprised if you can't. For instance, the mood someone is in and things like whether they're being sarcastic are pretty universal.
      Accents, syntax, dialect, modality, pronunciation: with some experience, it's pretty easy to start picking up on all of these even if you're not fluent. I can easily tell if a character is being informal, formal, a _parody_ of formal, rude, polite, rudely polite in a mocking way, has a Kansai accent, has a parody of a Kansai accent (thuggish, trader, comedian, etc), has an unusual speech pattern, gravitates to and/or emphasizes certain words, mispronounces certain things, sounds masculine, feminine, effeminate, tomboyish, educated, uneducated, noble, archaically noble, or any exaggeration of these, or is mimicking any of these things in any other character among many, many other things that would take paragraphs to fully list. All while barely understanding what is literally being said without subtitles. So again, speak for yourself.

    • @JaydenDimaio
      @JaydenDimaio 2 года назад

      @@heinrichagrippa5681 Don't presume to lecture me on understanding languages while you are talking shit.
      Without subtitles you would be completely lost. If you suddenly found yourself in Russia, Saudi Arabia, some sub Saharan tribe that communicates in clicks, a Inuit tribe that communicates with a rythmic undertone or an aboriginal tribe, you would have absolutely no idea what they're saying.
      They could be asking you a question, making fun of you, reciting a spoken word poem or talking absolute gibberish and you would have no idea.
      Now don't misunderstand me, if the speaker is deliberately emphatic about what they're saying, you may get lucky and recognise a question for example, but this is the exception and not how people usually speak.
      As I'm writing this I'm realising that you're not some deluded wannabe linguistic savant, you're just a sweaty disgusting sub human weeb, who has deluded themselves into thinking they know anything about Japanese culture or language and that by watching anime in subbed they are somehow cultural or engaging with high art, instead of what they're actually doing: watching a foreign cartoon in a language they don't understand which has to be *translated* for them anyway.
      Now you've wasted enough of my time and I'm not going to discuss it anymore, I've given you the information and at some point you will accept it.
