In this lesson we look at the basics of playing over one of the most common chord progressions of all time: the 1, 4, 5.
I'll show you 3 ways I like to approach soloing over this type of chord progression and provide 3 solo examples. The tabs and notation are included in the video.

Great lesson Jack! It was really helpful that you just kept it as a regular 1 4 5 and just changed the soloing ideas as opposed to adding in extra chords to 'jazz' up the progression. This made it easier for me to focus and compare the different ideas and sounds you've presented. Thank you for taking the time to put this lesson up. Cheers from the UK.👍

I'm a member of truefire and I contribute to patreon (Where I've connected to you). I will say this, we are in an information age. It is not difficult to find data and information, but, to find UNDERSTANDING. This has been the missing link and challenge of mankind for centuries. You understand it and are gifted and work incredibly hard to put together these lessons that if one is paying attention, there is enough there where no other instruction is necessary until all of that can be under our fingers. I really enjoy your instruction. In my early years, I was impressed with SPEED in a 70's shredding context, now, I see speed in being able to master all options on playing within the chord, and changes to the next chord. I hope you are compensated in some way that's commensurate with the incredible knowledge that is being GIVEN by you. I'd like to take a private from you just to interact and pay you a worthy price for your time.

Can't listen to you play for another six months without saying, and hopefully without sounding sucky, you have some deep beautiful music coming through you.The first time I heard you in april, it was like when I first heard eric johnson, or roy buchanan, or joe pass-although many fine players are at your level, it sounds like what I heard in my own head but couldn't quite play yet, as if that's very close to what I would play if I could. So for years I've been trying to make some of those botes in the right place etc. Many other players are techniqually as good , but your approach just sounds right to me( by the way thanks for also going over real basics that I cittoned on to a while ago but you pointed out some subtleties I have overlooked in square one so thanks again, alas I have no digital cash or I'd join your patreon but in the mean time I look forward to more videos, since the first ones I saw were when I was in hospital for two weeks-doing good now!

This is all just fantastic........what Jack presents here once again is his direct, no-nonsense approach to helping us develop our more sophisticated and professional sounding soloing. This makes taking solos so much more enjoyable and rewarding as well as fun! My weakness has always been tackling the popular key of G and not anymore. Again, with zero iron in the fire or any benefit to me other than improving on blues guitar and passing this along in a hopefully helpful and meaningful way, this 3-level quick lesson on developing our soloing in the key of G by Jack Ruch marries nearly perfectly with his great TrueFire course (Shades of Blues- 12-bar Shuffle in G) and this is highly recommended! I have been very encouraged and excited with Mr. Ruch's great instruction!! Jim C.
