In this lesson we look at the basics of playing over one of the most common chord progressions of all time: the 1, 4, 5.
I'll show you 3 ways I like to approach soloing over this type of chord progression and provide 3 solo examples. The tabs and notation are included in the video.
For the complete notation to the opening solo, downloadable versions of the embedded tabs, and the backing track I play over, sign up on my Patreon.
Thanks for supporting the channel. Enjoy!!

Random RUclips guitar tutorial… and the intro is one of the best solos I’ve EVER HEARD
Thanks John!!!
He spits them out like it's in his blood. I took a lesson with him and it was awesome. Highly recommend
certainly great solo in the intro
I hear ya. This dude’s playing is tasty.
My thought exactly. He's got the blues in him.
I've been playing guitar for nigh on forty years, and that's one of the very best I-IV-V lessons I've ever seen. Thank you, Jack. 🙂
You're very welcome! Thanks Raymond
Superb lesson. Beautiful melodic playing thanks very much
NOBODY on RUclips explains these things better than you Jack, thank you for yet another eye-opening lessong!
Your guitar teaching is the reason I fell back in love with the blues. Thank you for being such a big inspiration
Keep it up Jack I think you sound great. Outlining those chord voicings in the solo really makes it stand out
That was the BEST lesson that Sums up very understandable the approach to solo on a 12 bar blues with a more sophisticated approach !!! Thank you !
Man’s, this guy’s so solid, and such a great teacher.
Thank you!
Awesome video lesson very well explained I especially liked the notes that outlined the changes and how not using all the notes works to empathize the chord tones through the changes. It has been helpful in my understanding thank you 🙂
That just about sums the whole thing up. Just perfect. Thanks.
Awesome🎯Such great playing and a superb teaching method.
Great lesson Jack. Your approach is clear and your playing is tight in the groove. Thank you!
My pleasure! Thank you
Played with so much soul and feel.
Bravo man!
You say all the things I need to hear, Thanks for the inspiration!!
Gotta be one of the best lessons on RUclips on this topic. Thanks!
Glad you think so!
Great lesson Jack! Beautifully explained and demonstrated. Especially the notes to lean on in the major and minor pentatonic scales. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great lesson Jack! It was really helpful that you just kept it as a regular 1 4 5 and just changed the soloing ideas as opposed to adding in extra chords to 'jazz' up the progression. This made it easier for me to focus and compare the different ideas and sounds you've presented. Thank you for taking the time to put this lesson up. Cheers from the UK.👍
Same here. It popped up in my feed. Beautiful playing, phrasing and smooth tone. I was getting strong Larry Carlton vibe. Great info in the lesson too. Many thanks for sharing.
One of the best lessons I've watched that will help me tremendously. So well explained and demo'd with impeccable phrasing. Those double stops that start at 33 seconds I'm stealing! Thank you so much.
Awesome, thank you!
I learned a lot from the way you ramped the lesson up from the basic major/minor pentatonic scales over specific chords all the way up to the specific mixolydian scales over which chords. Nice concise and information dense lesson.
Glad it was helpful!
Every single note with intention, really the best playing and tone and a super meaningful lesson - thanks man, my playing has improved so much since I started listening to your lessons I now look for new more complex chord progressions to apply it. Thanks so much, you are an amazing player and teacher!
Thanks Dan!!
I am coming to appreciate your teaching style more amd more. Thanks pal !
Loving the teaching style !! But after 30 yrs of playing,,, I can honestly say that Im Truly stumped !
Your lessons are fantastic. I've learnt 4 of your solos so far. They take me to a new and refreshing place in terms of melody and chord accompaniement. Bravo! Good on you. I always look forward to whats next. I have improved tremendously.
Great to hear!
This has to be one of the very best nuggets of instruction I have seen! I liked and subbed during your intro solo. The rest has given me exactly what I need to focus on in my playing right now. I look forward to learning more from you! Thanks
Awesome! Thanks Jay!
I have found your approach and explanation of playing over the 1,4,5 quite useful. My sincere thanks Jack. All smiles and sore fingers.

Awesome video and content. You're an awesome player and teacher, thankful for your channel

I have had a Revelation with this lesson. Finally after more than fifty years of playing I understand about using the 3rd and flat 3rd. The min 7th of the 4 chord and 5th have that flat 3rd
Love this Jack, I am so signing up as a Patreon, thanks for the support and all of this amazing content.
Awesome, thank you!
Very very tasteful playing Jack! Great lesson. Thanks!
masterful teaching and beautiful playing. thats how you do it👌
Thank you kindly!
Dude this is unreal. You are a monster player and hell of a teacher. Very rare to have both 🙏🙏
The voice, so calm.
Your phrasing has a really nice flow to it, always giving the impression of one note leading to the next. It grounds the listener and gives the solo piece direction, structure and conclusion. Really nice and tasteful.
Thank you Andre!
Your channel is pure gold, thank you very much Jack
Glad you enjoy it!
Great lesson! You'r licks are so well placed! I've done the first level and there is already so much too work on... Thank's a lot!
You're very welcome!
Hi Jack .that was superb.......thanks for sharing .
THAT is a great lesson! 😊 👏
I'm a member of truefire and I contribute to patreon (Where I've connected to you). I will say this, we are in an information age. It is not difficult to find data and information, but, to find UNDERSTANDING. This has been the missing link and challenge of mankind for centuries. You understand it and are gifted and work incredibly hard to put together these lessons that if one is paying attention, there is enough there where no other instruction is necessary until all of that can be under our fingers. I really enjoy your instruction. In my early years, I was impressed with SPEED in a 70's shredding context, now, I see speed in being able to master all options on playing within the chord, and changes to the next chord. I hope you are compensated in some way that's commensurate with the incredible knowledge that is being GIVEN by you. I'd like to take a private from you just to interact and pay you a worthy price for your time.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
Man , you sure know what you R doing. You just tickle my ears , that then goes right into my soul , which jumps for joy.I saved your other vid I saw yesterday about playing all the 1/2 step modulations for a jazzier sound. Now your playing the hell out of a straight ahead blues. I’m gonna be checking you out. Good to meet you. I’m Doc from Dallas. ✌️🤠
Thank you Bradford!
Excellent video Jack! You have a great relaxed feel, and your demonstration of the 3 different harmonic approaches is enhanced by tasty melodic ideas. I've subscribed!

Jack : so cool ! very bright and happy , beautiful melody lines and driving down the road just a crusin'.. Frank , Catskill mtns..
Can't listen to you play for another six months without saying, and hopefully without sounding sucky, you have some deep beautiful music coming through you.The first time I heard you in april, it was like when I first heard eric johnson, or roy buchanan, or joe pass-although many fine players are at your level, it sounds like what I heard in my own head but couldn't quite play yet, as if that's very close to what I would play if I could. So for years I've been trying to make some of those botes in the right place etc. Many other players are techniqually as good , but your approach just sounds right to me( by the way thanks for also going over real basics that I cittoned on to a while ago but you pointed out some subtleties I have overlooked in square one so thanks again, alas I have no digital cash or I'd join your patreon but in the mean time I look forward to more videos, since the first ones I saw were when I was in hospital for two weeks-doing good now!
Awesome opening run, Jack!!!!
Thanks Jack, short, clear and concise - you've got a talent for conveying this practical information in easily digestible nuggets!
Apparently you can also play a little too!🤘
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent Jack, look forward to following this up on your Patreon, thanks
Thank you very much!
As a "I am stuck in minor pentatonic and cant get out of that" kinda guy this is refreshing and I hope to impress my teacher this week. #I still feel like a n00b but always love to play. Great video
Cool man! Glad you enjoy it
Thanks RUclips, best lesson I’ve ever seen on beginner soloing! Subscribed
Awesome, thank you!
This is all just fantastic........what Jack presents here once again is his direct, no-nonsense approach to helping us develop our more sophisticated and professional sounding soloing. This makes taking solos so much more enjoyable and rewarding as well as fun! My weakness has always been tackling the popular key of G and not anymore. Again, with zero iron in the fire or any benefit to me other than improving on blues guitar and passing this along in a hopefully helpful and meaningful way, this 3-level quick lesson on developing our soloing in the key of G by Jack Ruch marries nearly perfectly with his great TrueFire course (Shades of Blues- 12-bar Shuffle in G) and this is highly recommended! I have been very encouraged and excited with Mr. Ruch's great instruction!! Jim C.
Thank you Jim!

Man really I only learned that I need to learn alot more. But one day this will all make sense and I will be back . Amazing sound BTW.
You can do it!
Thanks man
Great lesson
Great teacher
I really like your lesson but your play is just WOW.
It's interesting that while the mixolydian over each chord is maybe the most "complex", I really think the major over one, minor over four and five gave the best sound.
Awesome lesson!
Thank Morgan!
I know everything so far you have ever posted but I am not as smooth as you. I over play I think. Such great playing. I love this stuff
Thanks man!
Sounds awesome. A very BB feel to it.
Thanks Richard!
