    I have Aspergers and I struggled in school. Not academically (I did well in my exams), but in class discussions and group projects I sucked. I simply didn't know how to include myself and nobody else had any desire to include me either. The classroom environment wasn't a good one for me

    Go inclusive education! I totally agree that people with disabilities shouldn’t be isolated

    Micheline is smart. That's why she scored high on her 11+. I live in the US where under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, a student must be educated in their least restrictive environment.

    If they can keep up academically in a mainstream school, I would definitely recommend they stay there. Special schools can’t provide the same level of education because they’re dealing with a multitude of other behaviour and different levels of understanding in the same class.

    I have 3 special needs students in my mainstream class right now and almost ZERO support. All the kids are English Language Learners and almost half read at below a kindergarten level, though I'm told to teach to grade 3 standards (I teach grade three). There is one English as an Additional Language teacher who comes for one class a day, who does a great job, but my really really low kids don't go elsewhere else for their English class, they are in the classroom, and with the needs being as high as they are they just can't thrive the way I know they could. We are both doing our best and almost all students have improved at least marginally, but there is simply not enough support for the needs. : ( I'm also making new materials during almost every spare moment...and it's not fair as the other class of the same grade at school only has one or two students of similar English level and has special needs but they are very high functioning students in comparison. I'm not advocating for them not being in the mainstream class, but some students NEED one on one support in certain areas in order for them to fully thrive.

    She needs to see California as they mandate inclusion. We actually have special class classifications that excludes the idea of much need for special schools.

    My very little 6 year old has now spent the last two years, and two years pre-school with the same FIVE special needs kids in a mainstream class of 17..... Two of these kids are high functioning and pose me no issue but the other three are obviously continuously violent towards others and constantly disruptive. This I witnessed myself at the Xmas play when one constantly hit a NT kid who couldn't get away... I feel that one teacher and one teaching assistant can no way manage these kids' behaviour. My daughter is afraid constantly.... It's really not fair for my daughter to receive a substandard education whilst being knocked over and injured by the various kids' 'episodes' which all have to witness and suffer on a daily basis.

    • @dan5721
      @dan5721 5 лет назад +1

      Gayle Ritchie must be frustrating but don’t blame the SEN kids as their “episodes” are probably a direct result of their special need. If you speak to the school the SEN kids may get some more support in order to allow your daughter a better experience.

    The issue here in the UK is that funding is becoming more and more limited due to our stupid prime minister making cuts in places that need the funding most so she can fund her and her MP's pockets. 3 of my brothers have autism, one has ADHD too and his preschool are amazing with him. Special schools here are kind of useless in regards to helping children with special needs to learn effectively, hence why all 3 of my siblings attend and have attended mainstream schools. My 3 brothers have learnt a lot more in main stream schools than they have anywhere else. This is because it allows them to develop their social skills as well as their intellectual skills whereas in a special school they wouldn't have that chance to socialise with people different to them.

    • @simeonyves5940
      @simeonyves5940 5 лет назад +1

      I disagree, having been bullied to the point where I suffered a *Massive Nervous Breakdown* at the Age of 12 in Mainstream School, and finding my life got a hell of a lot easier once I was moved into Special School, I personally feel Special School should be *Mandatory* for Autistic Individuals who are *Clearly* not Coping with Mainstream or are suffering from *intolerable* levels of Bullying due to their Differences.
      I think it would be better for those individuals to not Socialise with "Normal" Students than be Bullied by those *Animals* until they go quite *literally* Insane from the Stress and Trauma that induces!!
      Also, please Keep Your Anti-Tory Rhetoric out of this, I know May is one of the least Satisfactory PM's we have had for a *very* a long Time, but given that the Alternatives (a Howling Mad Communist Idiot who thinks we need to more like a Permanently Bankrupt and completely Lawless Third World Bunghole like Venezuela, or a Die Hard White Supremacist Arsehat who wants to catapult us back to the Darkest Days of Pre War Fascist Popularity) are both Absolutely *Unthinkable!* In My Eyes, I will take Her over the other current Choices any day of the Week.

    • @PandaSenpai
      @PandaSenpai 5 лет назад

      Simeon Yves I understand however “special schools” do not help all children with autism. 3 of my brothers who have autism are in mainstream schools and are performing better than they would have done in “special school”. One of my brothers achieved high GCSE’s and a high grade in college and is off to university in September to study games design. I know mainstream isn’t for everyone but children could at least have sufficient support at school. Unfortunately our government do not care as they have clearly shown many times, about the disadvantaged.

    • @simeonyves5940
      @simeonyves5940 5 лет назад +1

      @@PandaSenpai Thankyou.
      True, I Guess I was being a bit Fierce with the "Mandatory for all" Statement, Maybe I should edit it to Mandatory for all those who are clearly not coping with Mainstream?
      I am glad Your Brothers are coping well at Mainstream and are Performing incredibly well Academically.
      I would have absolutely *Killed* to have done Games design , I am extremely Proud for Your Brother getting those High GCSE Grades , and I wish Him all the Luck in the World on that Course, and I hope to one Day have something He has worked on Installed on My Rigs Hard Drive :)
      However in the Same way that Special Schools do not help every Autistic Individual, Mainstream School does not always help them Either, I really do think the current Education System Policy of "Forced Inclusion" is a *Terrible* , even *Inhumane* Idea that is only Leading to Awful Situations like the one I lived through.
      Until Bullying is wiped out, and that is something that is never going to Happen, I feel that the Option of Special School should be made open and Available for Anyone who clearly isn't coping with Mainstream, or is suffering from Intolerable levels of Bullying due to their Differences, so they can be moved out of Mainstream before the worst Happens. Sadly, "Forced Inclusion" means that Option is most often not there until the Worst has Happened :(
      I do agree that there needs to be *Vastly* More Special Needs Teachers, Better Training for Teachers in how to cope with Special Needs Pupils, (sadly, I got bullied even by *Staff* at the Mainstream Secondary I went to :( ) and every School should have a Special Needs Support Base, or at the very Least a Sensory Chillout Room, to better Support Special Needs/Autistic Students.
      But, indeed, that just cant be done with the Massive Funding Cuts that Schools have recently been Hit By, meaning they have basically cancelled any and all Plans to better Provide for Special Needs Students.
      Maybe the Country can use those Multiples of Billions that we wont have to pay to the Evil Unification anymore after a couple more months time to shore up Special Needs Education Funding?
      However, I must ask that You please Accept that what you said about the Government not caring at all for the Plight of the Disabled is true of all the Political Parties, and it does not matter who is in Charge, the Disadvantaged and the Disabled will be thrown onto the Scrapheap to help fund Government Greed. The School Situation is not going to be helped by another Party taking Charge. Please do not kid Yourself on that. The only Difference between Politicians is the Colour of the Party Banner on their Advertisement Leaflets.

    With all due respect but is the Baroness advocating the exclusion of children instead of advocating for less pupils per class and the existence of 2 educators, one pf which should be specialised in SEN education, per class? The failure of the system is not because they have SEN kids going to mainstream, it's because the system doesn't aplly the real Inclusive Education with the traits that come with it! How do they do it in Finland? Are their SEN kids come from a different planet than the British ones there? No, obviously not! It's just they actually apply Inclusive Education correctly! They prefer to actually spend money and invest for a good education system as a state than exclude pupils just to save money and resources! All those children would be alright in a class of 15 kids maximum with 2 educators. They could even facilitate some learners of more severe learning difficulties as it happens in some other countries. So again due all respect but that lady, the Baroness, doesn't have a clue.

    Special education is needed. And in the past decades through many laws it is being enforced. But often at the expense of every other child. Inclusion at all costs is costing a lot. With these new demands comes no new funding. So funding is removed from the general population and teachers are left underpaid under funded over crowded and forced to deal with a subset of students who's abilities are not withing the parameters of a regular classroom setting. This is negatively impacting every other student, while a special needs students may have 50,000 a year in aids and special interventions, due to new laws, this is taking from the education of every other child. The children can even further suffer when a child is shoehorned in by demand, but has daily outbursts of obscenities, violence, aggression, that is harmful to everyone in the class, but they can be reprimanded or put into a special setting because of THEIR RIGHTS. What about the rights of all the children? The forced integration also lowers test scores even further reducing the funding a school receives. People say "your discriminating. Seperate but equal is not ok". And on and on. My question is this. At what point do the needs and rights of our majority of children (even disabled ones who are fully capable of being in a classroom setting) get to be considered? It's not only the general education students suffering, many of the parents and voices advocating forced integration are worried about emphasizing their child having a "normal" experience in school, over them actually getting a decent, tailored, and strong education in a special education program with peers who are ging through the same things. We need to demand change. Seperate funding for increased disability laws, for one. We also need to end inclusion at all costs, because the costs are too high for all involved. Both special needs and general education students deserve to have a good education, instead we are lowering the quality of that education all around in favor of "equity". Basically "everyone must suffer because I don't want to admit my child is actually a detriment to the education of those around them."

      They do inclusion successfully in Finland though. How do they do it? Why don't they care about money? Why do they invest in education when we moan about it?
