  • "L'Antounèno" and "Baïlèro," my two favorite movements from Canteloube's Songs of the Auvergne.
The American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski.

Anna Moffo sings these songs with the sweetest voice. My favourite recording.

Agreed, though Lesley Garrett, who I went to school with, has a lovely rendition.

This isn't "sweet" music... Listen to Netania Davrath and you'll get the truth!

This woman is fast becoming my favourite singer on RUclips. And to think I have not heard many recordings by her before...!
    Stokowski is not bad either.
I once had to play the piano arrangement of this in a concert. Phew!

One of the most incredible voices of 20th century, yet so underrated. I'm glad she left so many great recordings. A definitive Violetta and Manon (for me), amazing Gilda, lovely bel canto interpretator. Her recordings of Rondine, Luisa Miller, Songs of Auvergne are best ever.

This is the ultimate in singer and song combinations. The beauty of this melts the heart and glistens the eyes....

I first sought out the Songs of the Auvergne after a visit to that very part of France in the early years of our marriage. I was lucky enough to buy Anna Moffo's version (on a cassette tape). It's still the best recording of all. Her voice was absolutely perfect and "Baïlèro" is one of my all time favourites

Check out Natania Devrath. A more complete set and a totally artless singer.
      LESS WOBBLE.
And Frederica ain't so bad either !

As this excerpt demonstrates Moffo in her prime had a voice so rich, round, and smooth - so beautiful - that we are often moved by it. But she was also an exceptional all-round musician. A lethal combination!

i would sit on a big rock at twilight and listen to this as i watched the ocean change dynamic and the sky change colour at my grandmothers house for years. Sometimes its a bit painful to hear it again...but after it starts i feel right near the sea again and it has a renewing and healing effect! Music is so immediate and powerfull...and gets firmly planted in the subconcious.

I have mentioned in other comments related to Anna Moffo that I saw her in performance when I was in high school and she performed at East Carolina University as part of the artist series. The concert was spellbounding. Such a beauty to look at and a voice to match. She has a voice that I have always been able to recognize because of the clarity and texture of her tone. She passed away at the age of 73 of a stroke after a long battle with breast cancer.

Even tho u may not have been speaking to me, I think I was wrong in calling others' versions vulgar. When I hear Moffo singing these two songs though, my heart just floods and I think of how happy I am to be alive. It's somehow a personal thing. I am not even a fan of hers but she does something to me here that neither a conductor, Canteloube nor another soprano can do.

She is absolutely an Angel! God, Himself, is surely singing to his Creation through her!

May I say to one and all that Anna's debut recording on Angel has what is for me the most gorgeous interpretation ever of the mad scene from Lucia. Indispensable for Moffo aficionados! Get it, you will not regret it!!!

It's about two lovers calling to each other across an impassable river. I love this song, and have used it in choreography for my ballet students.

In my humble opinion the quintessential rendition of this beautiful piece of music is by Netania Davrath, she captures it exquisitely!

I came here because another site said Victoria de los Angeles' voice was better than 'Marni Nixon's performance.
So now I am now on to check out Netania Deavrath
Excellence is all I am after, but variety of interpretation is also part of the charms of great music......
I am back. Netania's voice is pure delight, Tony.

I can't say which is better or best, but this is one of the four interpretations which I have returned to again and again (the others are by Victoria de Los Angeles, Kiri te Kanawa and Frederica von Stade). I had not heard Netania Devrath's interpretation before today - it has a delightful freshness which is very appealing.

She doesn't yoodle only one singer could do that and this was her song.. I'm sorry folks but the lady who could sing this and make a sheep cry isn't here anymore..This is one girls song only and if you haven't heard it you should :-)

Agree that this is the best version of Chant d'Auvergne on RUclips. However in term of what's out there, Frederica Von Stade's rendering of Bailerò slightly edges that of Anna Moffo. IMPO

I've hear the other versions of these songs on youtube and they all sound so vulgar in comparison to this one. I know to each his own but I am curious as to why no one seems to come even close to singing it as well as Moffo.
