      @@jothegreek There was nothing "freakish" about Galis, Galis was just a godly scorer. Giannis got the nickname because he is a 7 foot dude (almost) who runs like a gazelle , jumps really high, is super coordinated with really long limbs.
      Sofo himself was also a freak athlete cause he was incredibly agile and fast for his height and bodyframe , at his best shape he could run like a guard. Think of like a mini Shaq thus the Baby Shaq nickname. So yes he would have been the first "greek freak"
      Although one would argue that the first "greek freak" was Panagiotis Fasoulas (look him up if you don't know)

    So, to anyone who doesn't know who this guy is. His name is Sofoklis Chortsanitis, he is 35 years old and recently retired from basketball. He played for many great Euroleague teams during his prime, he had some incredible years and was the Shaq of Euroleague basketball. Unfortunately, he had mental problems he struggled with that limited his potential. He could have gone down as one of the Euroleague legends but overall he accomplished a lot of things.
    His nickname was Big Sofo and Baby Shaq. He didn't want to play in the NBA, and that doesn't mean that he wasn't good. US people need to realise that high level basketball can be played "overseas", but I guess 5 out of 6 non US players winning NBA awards wasn't enough to prove that.
    And for the people who say why they don't know him, it's because he played on a high level over a decade ago and you probably watch only NBA

      @kushberry6679 3 года назад +33

      @@noahx.classic I agree that are some fans that like Euroleague basketball, but overall European basketball is always overlooked. NBA is on a different level athletically, not in fundamentals. In Europe they play based on their philosophy, team spirited system and a lot more defense. European players are 80% of the time better when it comes to overall understanding and feeling of the game and fundamentals. I'm not saying that NBA players don't have high basketball IQ, but overall European players are trained a lot better when it comes to basketball. The only thing that European basketball lacks is gym training

      So the NBA has no real benefit from that , it would only hurt the league if the NBA champs lost against a supposedly "inferior" league. But the difference really isn't as big as people think between the top Euroleague teams and NBA teams. What makes the difference big are the top 10-20 NBA stars but beyond that the talent in rosters is comparable, most Euroleague players could be role players in NBA teams

    As a Maccabi fan, I can tell you Schortsanitis was not just big. He had the vertical leap of a much lighter player. Another thing greatly underrated with Sofo were his amazingly good hands. Any pass to him he will catch! True big man connoisseurs will attest that this is what makes a big man really good - good hands! (Kwame Brown as a contrast).
    His demise was uncontrolled weight. Who knows why he does this to himself... Definitely not lacking in spirit - the guy would lunge to the floor for absolutely every loose ball. I think he's just addicted to food :( He will die very young if he doesn't fix this.

    Sofo was at a peak that year...sofo had it all except for mental stability... It is tough for some people follow all the rules so as to be the best ...it is more common that you see talented players with big potential to make 1-2 good years....but is very difficult to have a decade or more at the very high level ...mental and psychological stability are coming first whatever you do

    THE ONLY REASON WHY GALIS DIDN'T PLAY FOR THE NBA WAS THE GREECE NATIONAL TEAM. AT THE TIME THERE WAS A LAW IN THE USA THAT SAID AN NBA PLAYER COULDN'T PLAY FOR HIS NATIONAL TEAM WHEN THERE WERE NBA GAMES. GALIS SAID NO, IT'S AN HONOR FOR ME TO PLAY FOR THE GREECE NATIONAL TEAM RATHER THAN IN THE NBA!!!! AND GALIS IS IN THE HOLE OF THE GAME !!!

      Are you referring to #4? If so, that's Teo Papaloukas. He never played in the NBA but he's a Euroleague legend, among the greatest PGs in Euro history.
      Or maybe you're talking about #7 Spanoulis who did play briefly for the Rockets back in the T-Mac years but then went back to Europe and became a legend as well. He's still playing and holds numerous records on scoring, passing etc.
      In general that Greek team had an amazing backcourt, which is mainly the reason they beat team USA and reached the Final.
