Diagonal AWD TEST: Subaru Crosstrek (XV) | Part 3/3

  • Did you know: The name Subaru is Japanese, meaning ‘unite’. It’s also a term for a cluster of six stars in the Taurus constellation, named 'Pleiades' by the ancient Greeks. According to Greek mythology, these stars were once Atlas’ daughters. The six-star cluster featured in the Subaru badge design is known in Japan as mutsuraboshi, meaning ‘six stars’.
    Subaru was the first automobile brand to use a Japanese word as its name! The Crosstrek will receive major change for 2018! The new model will show a refreshed styling and a, more than welcome, new interior! We don't expect major modification to the drivetrain but since the Subaru Crosstrek is a good small crossovers/SUV, let's do a short review!
    New for 2017: It offers a new trim level, the 2.0i Premium Special Edition but gone is the hybrid version! Remember that the Subaru Crosstrek offers standard all-wheel drive, a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, and a roomy interior and cargo area at an affordable price!
    Here is a part of our short review of the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek! Feel free to share us what you want us to show you!

    when the front wheels are turned esp cuts down the power goes to rear wheels because it thinks car may be skidding. in that case just center the wheel, power starts to go rear, after car moves turn the wheel again. in the video car moves when driver centers the front wheels.
    this is just a confusion between awd and esp. any subaru with symetrical awd can pass that obstacle with only one tire gripping.

    • @ar-videos
      @ar-videos 7 лет назад +17

      studiomountain yes. You are supposed to turn off VDC.
      VDC is looking for wheel slip, and takes throttle away in a way to prevent a spinout. Subaru continuous AWD will help you hydroplane... Because its continuous and symmetrically balanced when your front wheels which are fighting water lift off... your rear wheels in the wake have traction and can push you into a oversteer spin just like a RWD car.
      VDC detects and removes torque to save your ass and prevent a spin.
      Off road at low to medium velocity, you need to push power without the computer taking away the power.

      My Crosstrek 2.0d 6MT, is too different for a comparison, but CVT should never have this much struggle either. (Where I live, I have this situation quite often - that's exactly why I have chosen this car.) Engine power I feel absolutely sufficient for a smaller body - it takes me where and when I have to go. I agree: in a messy, uphill situation, first thing you do is turn VDC off. Then don't forget to turn it on when you get up the tarmac with your muddy wheels.

      VDC = Vehicle Dynamic Control (also. ESC:Electronic Stability Control) these features monitor steering input and accelerometers to determine when vehicle direction doesn't match driver's intended direction.
      Reduces engine power, manipulates transmission, and brakes in order to help correct.

    i own a 2016 cvt and i could tell you its got the worst traction of all the subbies the torque in the cvt is 60:40 biased to the front and sometimes the system stutters trying to send power to rear wheels turning off vdc only makes it worst, the awd in the cvt crosstrek is non-symetrical, the 2018 is the real deal. i really believe this is a honest, truthful and accurate review, great job!

    Rear LSD diffs were the norm on forester and outbacks for a long time.

    • @CarQuestion
      @CarQuestion  7 лет назад

      We just tested a 2008 WRX today on that test, besides ground clearance issue, what do you think will be the result?

    • @TommioRS
      @TommioRS 7 лет назад

      Depends if the car is a manual or auto.
      Any 5mt subaru ever made with a manual transmission has a LSD center diff. So no computers.
      If the car is a auto it uses a hydro clutch pack to control awd.
      But no wrx past 2008 will have a front or rear LSD.
      So the car probably will be similar to the XV in some regards.

I'm talking the first and some of the other attempts, not all of them, the ones where you are up in a second or two, those look like vdc on. I have a 2018 Crosstrek; they added the X-mode, which is a NICE addition. the 2018 handles much better than my 2015 Crosstrek which I previously had. I really liked the 2015; till I drove the 2018... Nice improvements!

    I have to disagree with the idea that a car is still "okay" to be AWD if it can't pass these AWD tests. If I buy an AWD car I expect it to behave like a car that can have All its Wheels Driving. Just because it sends some power to a wheel doesn't mean that its driving the car. I think they should have a moniker in here 4x4, AWD and MWD for "mixed-wheel drive" where some wheels drive the car and some wheels just stabilize the car. It would be more accurate, at least.

    It funny that you don't seem to stop this Subbie in the worst over the hump situation and you let it roll a little with out full stop, also asphalt hump is taken at less severe angle than other AWD systems you have tested on this show..... little favorite here :)

    Very disappointing. If the opened VDC is the reason, why didn't it send torque to other wheels that have more grip instead of solely taking away torque from spinning wheels? That's because Subaru's VDC is stupid on its own.

      Transfers to the least resistance wheel. (Open differential) subaru has other modes through out there models for example (x-mode) which can help with transfers of power to certain wheels in certain conditions.
