Listening to Chris Potter will either inspire you or make you want to quit. You can be inspired knowing you may never play like him but if you quit you will definitely not.
He said in a interview that he started playing the sax when he was 10. He have only played 4 years intill this recording! I have played 4year and would never be able to whip out that kind of lines... :(
@@rodrigobertoa5916 you must have the internet because you’re here. So why not use it to help you not be wrong? He was born in 71. It took me 3 seconds to find that information
They play the 3rd note of the melody on the beat. It's supposed to be anticipated. As far as I'm concerned, that nullifies his entire solo, and everything he's ever played since. Unforgivable. AND I could beat him in an arm wrestle. At that age I mean. When he was 14 and if I was my present age of 41. In that hypothetical scenario, I might win.
Hello Osian Roberts, haha, stumbled upon your comment browsing RUclips. You've been my sax teacher at Prague Jazz workshop 2003 and I still play! Thanks for your lessons, you taught us Sack of Whoe and some other tunes by ear. Took me 15 more years to figure out that learning by ear is actually REALLY important, so that's what I do now. Being almost 32. I'm 32 soon. And Chris was 14. Oh my god. Im such a looser. Anyways, best regards Hannes from Berlin
ikr, the stundents of jazz today are so fuckin competitive. I'm not one of them, but I understand it to be a very physically taxing and mentally demanding field. Respect to all of you...
Thing is...when you are on a genius level of something, it usually manifests very early :) Getting to this level after 4 years of playing is INSANE! Not even talking about the command of the instrument, harmony & rhythm. His phrasing is SICK!
I think that many Saxophonists after completing an education in college would want to be at this type of playing level...Chris Potter is only 14 in this recording, at 14, I think I was still sucking my thumb...Wait, listening to this recording makes me want to suck my thumb, and put my Sax back in the closet forever
No one noticed percussionist Jim hall? Reminds me of when Miles Davis toured with a saxophonist named Bill Evans while already he have had records with Bill Evans the legend.
damn, i remember seeing this a few months after it came oout. i was 14 myself, and was like "i wish i could be half as good as that". fast forward 5-6 years on, i'm not, but it's still helped me working hard at whatever i'm tryna do

I'm taking up golf.
Golf is hard too.
I know what you mean but I already play golf and I think I'm a better saxophone player than a golfer. Maybe working with clay???
I'mma be a professional failure.

David Arbelaez I’m barely seeing this and I’m still shocked that you said “ or make you want to quit” 😂
Clearly inspired me! Love it! and trying hard I continue to follow my heroes. Practicing, practicing and practicing!
Can at least pick up aa few licks from him at the very least.
The little hops/fall offs at 1:07 get me every time

@@jofinsky8400 No... They dropped it... Sounded pretty, though.
Remember jazz musicians, if you're not as good as everyone equal to or less than your age you are an inferior human being.

word, time to give up the dream
Haha, i like that!
Its liek the guitarist is literally telling the rhythm section 'uh guys, slow down a bit ' at the start of his solo lol

Guitarist: well fuck how do I follow up a fucking 14 year old that just did that

I sold my Sax two weeks ago, now i know why....

Sadly, John passed away in 1987.

Kai Burns I know this is a year old but read the original post lol
But the real synchronicity is that Chris Potter played with 'real' Jim Hall too.

14 years old??? insane!!!
Ends the solo on the flat 5. Only Chris potter
Haha didn't notice that before
oh wow i didn't know that
At 14 years of age too. What kind of twisted 14 year old thinks of ending on a flat 5 lol
L Ron Howard idek dude. He’s a freak and always has been
WTF? 14? I`ll just go over the bridge and jump!
There's no bridge to this song...
Why does this make me laugh lol
BrickFilmerPower, 😂

How you do that at 14...he’s insane

Sounds like Phil woods swallowed an adolescent Chris potter pill..nice
Agreed. Reminds me of early Woods!
Is he playing alto? Dang he was incredible at that age!

I'm just trying to play along with the goddamn chords!
That line at 1:20 😩😩🔥
Cole Palensky simply amazing
that line at literally everywhere
it sounds so perfect 11/10
Hey do you think that was a lick he prepared before or a lick he made on the spot? (regardless it's just amazing!)
i'm crying i was so stupid back then
I started to play "jazz drum" a year ago,and I'm 15 years old. it makes me want to practice.

honestly the end of the guitar solo is nice . i just feel bad because he got overshadowed. hell, i'd kill to even be jim mings
I sounded better at age 4

I honestly prefer this to his later stuff
that guitarist must be haunted for years... like, nearly 50 years now..

Is it possible to play like this after just 4 years of playing saxophone??
I dont think so.
Though rare, there are many such gifted savants. A modern Mozart!

this is a soprano sax he's playing right??
yes
No, it's alto.
yeah I just realised
oh youre right, that range is a bit too low for soprano, youd think hed hit some higher notes.
yeah after listening to this song over a billion times, I've realised the tone sounds more altoish.
that guitarist kind of gets owned, not that i could do better.
jim mings
but i kinda like his solo, especially towards the end... he just had a little trouble to start it off, not to mention Potter ends his solo on a b5....
