Tesla Model Y - The Ultimate EV Hack You Must Know! Auto Power Frunk

  • Both of our Tesla Model Y's have had an automatic frunk opener installed, and it has been one of the best things I added to our Teslas. The first 2020 Tesla Model Y was equipped with V3 of the Hansshow Auto Frunk Opener, and our 2021 was equipped with the original V5 Auto-Frunk opener. Now, this new version has made yet more improvements and operates more reliably than all previous versions.
    This Model Y had a Frunk opener on it for some time, but I removed it to install this newest version. Although I never had any issues, I wanted to get a look at the improvements that have been made in this last year.
    This new version is much more straight forward to install, and is easier due to enhancements to brackets, wire harnesses and more. This is a DIY friendly item to install, and if you come with the right equipment, and follow my tips in the video, you should be able to do this without any major problems.

    I had the hanshow frunk opener for a while. I loved it, until one day it didn’t latch properly and the trunk popped open when I got on the highway. That was scary. Fortunately I was able to pull over safely and was not impacted by other vehicles. Insurance handling it was interesting because they kept asking me what other cars were involved lol. Nonetheless, I had the hood replaced and a new windshield because the hood damaged and cracked the windshield and when it opened.

    Looks great. I think I may end up doing this install. Have watched a few videos on it now.
    Not a criticism of the install, but considering that the motor is meant to be mounted with a zip tie, I am surprised they don't have a dedicated slot in the housing of the unit for said tie. Would just feel better knowing that there's no shot of it wiggling free.
    My only other concern is the emergency release. If people see a power frunk and realize that it's not stock, they could easily walk up and pop it when you aren't around. Maybe not a HUGE issue, but something to be mindful of if you are storing any valuables up there.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  Год назад +1

      The latch can be undone with or without this kit from that slot opening. The motor is fine because it connects to the latch via a steel cable. Super stiff and doesn’t have a chance to hang up on anything

    So I have one of those and love it. But it has caused issues with service. I am missing my 12 volt jump cable in the access port in the front bumper. I made a service request to have that figured out. After they started they saw the auto frunk open ore and said they wouldn’t touch anything in there since there was an aftermarket mod. I argued they had nothing to do with each other but here I am, still missing a 12v emergency jump wire.

    Frunk wasn't fully closed and lifted when driving down the road! Cracked wind shield and bent the hood! If you put something in the frunk and it closes, but due to the safety mechanism it stops closing (sucks down, but doesn't latch), or doesn't fully close... It doesn't let you know on the screen. (A repeatable flaw) YOU! have to physically make sure it closes completely every time. Also it didn't last... Used it for like 6 months and it stopped working.. Tried back and forth with Hanspree, but it was difficult to use the Whats Ap and time difference in China is 12hrs difference... However, the shocks are much softer and makes it easier to close the hood manually, so I just left it.. It clicks to open, but it doesn't self lift or close. Mine version was the 2022 Model Y V5... The frunk is pretty much unusable in stock form for me.. Had to press too hard to close the frunk and the hood would bend.. Having to press it in a certain spot to not bend the hood every time is a pain! Overall, I would recommend it, just know that you need to watch it latch before you start driving... Hopefully they fixed the bugs with the new version or Maybe wait until Tesla comes out with their version! My version also required some bending of the metal to get the hood to close perfectly flush... My mechanical experience is above average.. I have changed starters, alternators, rotors, water pumps, radiators etc... Hope this info helps! Good Luck! Be careful.... Watch that hood close flush before you drive off!

    This is by far the MOST DANGEROUS modification for your frunk. If it opens for any reason (wrong or bad installation, bad ground or contact after corrosion, software bug, while driving on the highway, the hood will smash on your windscreen, you get blind and crash for sure. Think about it why Tesla is not offering a auto frunk.

    What do you do when the unit won’t actually “power open” - mine opens (unlatches) but then doesn’t extend. I have to raise it by hand. Then the button will close it. 🧐 Mine it’s like the initial “unlock” doesn’t let the hood get up enough for the power to take over. I am stumped.
