this is the best version of Bolero on YT hands down(IMO). This conductor is a genius. The percussion guys would have been melting down, easily hardest thing to play on drums , like the rubbing head and stomach thing for 15 minutes straight..other versions a bit too quick(or too slow) for my taste, this has tension like its just about to fall over but never does..like great jazz.

I live in northern MI, and a few years ago I saw the group Pink Martini at Interlochen Arts Academy. They opened with this piece, and my first thought was "Bolero AGAIN?" But they blew my socks off, it was fantastic. Hands down the best performance I've ever seen. When it ended we were all on our (sockless) feet clapping and whistling like mad. Tears were running down my cheeks. (When I was five, I cried listening to the theme from "Born Free." It seemed weird, so I asked my mother if people ever did that. She gave me some non-committal response like "I wouldn't worry about it." I felt more peculiar. Years later I realized that I should have asked my father, the music lover. All my life I've wept at tremendous performances. And I hate to say this, but among others, "Ravi Shankar's music made me cry..." THERE'S a performer.)

This piece is the musical rendition of earning a goal you've been striving for over long years. It starts out slowly, but builds... bit by bit... each rise in tension is the self confidence growing. The snare, ever present and steady is the will to wake up each day and push harder and harder... as the journey progresses it gets stronger and stronger and then finally! The Crescendo, when you look back at all the steps you've taken and you triumphantly shout!

So it appears we have three theories as to why he conducts with a toothpick:
    1. His conducting motions would be so violent that the baton would often go flying, so he downsized to reduce damage.
    2. He does it to piss off critics who accused him of using a baton that was too small.
    3. He does it to piss off critics who accused him of conducting without a baton, so he got the smallest one possible.
Which one is it? You decide!

Okay, I'm back. My reaction, "Ehhhh"
Warning: if anyone wants to watch that video, you get about 5 seconds of the key change in the performance (Celine Dion singing, "All By Myself") and 27 minutes of musical technobabble and extreme over-analysis.
