The day youtube interrupted Ravel's Bolero with an ad I quitted using youtube to hear music. End of an era. Farewell fellow youtubers.
I am totally appalled by not one but two commercial interruptions! In Bolero, no less!! Are you f***ing kidding me?!?
And this is exactly why adblocker was invented.
@@Andyaero It doesn't prevent You Tube barging in tho does it?

@@deusvolt2146 Yep, I'm here reading all the comments lamenting the ads, while listening to Bolero uninterrupted and wondering "what ads?"

I'll never forget this experience.
He was criticized for directing without a baton. So as a FU he used the smallest baton he could find: a toothpick
Marvelous!
Yes what a man.i like that style
Awesome, I love it!!!
Rigid snake stick mate; check the indentations from the drum stick, precision comes from imprecision, so where did it go? (the shake's admonition.)
It didn,t bother him, The Orchestra or the Audience. brilliant
This masterpiece should never be interrupted by ads. It's inexcusable and speaks poorly of the products, as well as RUclips's crass ineptitude.

Yeah. It began with an ad with a big shaggy dog. Mind you, the musicians and conductor need to chill out.
I got rid of the ads on my desktop computer with an ad blocker, but on my Android phone, googlebooger blocks the ad blocker app.
Beautiful song. If I was a millionaire I would pay all of them to pay this song for me. I would probably cry. To hear such beautiful music. 🙂🥰

Il Bolero di Ravel è la melodia più bella di tutta la storia umana.
It’s all fun and games until “BiG” brings the strings into the party @ 11:12

Calming-
I would be terrified playing that snare, the amount of skill to keep that going perfectly is absolutely astounding.
The hardest working 💪 one there.
Your right dude, it is quite challenging to play something relatively simple over and over again in perfect time.
Too right, although one time a young kid sitting behind me on a plane managed to do it for 10 hours straight, using the back of my seat as a snare.
It's the only time you don't want to do a rimshot

this is the best version of Bolero on YT hands down(IMO). This conductor is a genius. The percussion guys would have been melting down, easily hardest thing to play on drums , like the rubbing head and stomach thing for 15 minutes straight..other versions a bit too quick(or too slow) for my taste, this has tension like its just about to fall over but never does..like great jazz.
Yes I dare to say this is even better than the original.

Can we all take moment to pay respects to our Bass players who have to play the same two notes over and over for 15 minutes.
Not an enviable task...
Correction: it's three notes.
Let's not forget the percussionists
Lol
The same two integral notes though!!
Also for those asking... he is using a toothpick as a “FU” to certain critics who said the baton he HAD been using was too small
Yeah, people really complaining rather than listening. If it's OK for him why not for you?
batton too small LOLS

Everything about this is Premier League. The musicians are all world class, but the sound engineering and the visual editing all bring together an absolutely superb musical experience.
It is unconscionable that youtube would place a comercial in the middle of this!

I never get tired of hearing this composition from various orchestras, and I enjoy this as the best presentation of it that I've ever heard.
Agree absolutely
Best of Bolero !! Thank you Mr. Gergijew & Orchestra !!!
I think Gergiev and the LSO own this piece of music now ....it's going to be a long time before another orchestra and conductor can match this,,,they spin music in to sheer energy !
He also conducted the Maryiinsky orchestra playing this. I don’t like it as well as this performance.
Some people think the conductor is being pompous...I now tend to think that he is making a point about how much he trusts his orchestra. What do you think?
Thanks to youtube's greed, I got to watch 7 commercials in the middle of this beautiful music. Bad form, youtube, bad form.
I know. I was the Lucky one I guess. With me 1 interruption 😂

The first rehearsal for this concert...
Jack Nicholson shows up in a tux and pulls out a toothpick
Percussionist: hmm, looks like we'll be playing Bolero
Unshaven, later sweating; and conducting with a toothpick. Marvelous eye contact.
Not knowing anything about him I first thought who was the awesome drunk
Norron, well said, that is precisely what the art of conducting is all about. "Eye contact".
Yet, the best!
that's leadership, the art of getting people to make things happen by one's sheer persona (in the good sense that is)
He reminds of the conductor from that one Buggs bunny episode
I have chills. This conductor is menacingly brilliant. Jack Nicholson's long lost cousin is amazing!
Jup. Saw it too 😂😂😂
Not surprised I'm not the only one that saw that lol!!!
I thought that too. The Shining.
Always thought he looks like Jack...or Jack looks like him..lol.
All conducting and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
Google ads absolutely ruined this.
This is an incredible piece of music, masterfully played. Those who think it is repetitive are sadly mistaken. It changes and gradually escalates all the time. Extremely demanding on each orchestra member. How the violins play the rhythm in the early stages for example. How Ravel wrote each instrument blows the mind. Never get tired of it.
Это сказка! Слушайте!
I wish I knew how to compose music, I'm always dreaming up nice music but forget it when I wake up or don't have the skills to write it down in time!

Every time I listen to this piece, I think Ravel must have been a terrific lover.
“The only love affair I have ever had was with music” Maurice Revel.
Perhaps this piece is so grand because he sublimated that drive into his work.
Ravel himself disliked this piece. When you listen to all his other wonderful compositions, I can see why. He was a perfectionist. But I just think it's wonderful. I played the side drum in it many years ago. The most terrifying experience in my life!!
@@DavidA-ps1qr wow, I can just imagine!
I live in northern MI, and a few years ago I saw the group Pink Martini at Interlochen Arts Academy. They opened with this piece, and my first thought was "Bolero AGAIN?" But they blew my socks off, it was fantastic. Hands down the best performance I've ever seen. When it ended we were all on our (sockless) feet clapping and whistling like mad. Tears were running down my cheeks. (When I was five, I cried listening to the theme from "Born Free." It seemed weird, so I asked my mother if people ever did that. She gave me some non-committal response like "I wouldn't worry about it." I felt more peculiar. Years later I realized that I should have asked my father, the music lover. All my life I've wept at tremendous performances. And I hate to say this, but among others, "Ravi Shankar's music made me cry..." THERE'S a performer.)
@@ofthedarknessthemoonlight5412 Actually, your original comment is correct. Over the years Bolero has become a very sexually charged work. But I'm not so sure Ravel had this in mind when he wrote it :-)
It is wonderful that we can feel emotion from music. I admit to shedding tears when listening to certain pieces and think it's lovely that you admit to the same. David A.
The Best Bolero I've heard
Thank you Maystro Gergiev
That look the conductor gave when he opened his eyes... imagine the look he could’ve given for a cough 😂
Well, he does look like Jack Nicholson in Shining
Now that you mention it. Too funny.
I love having this play in the background while I'm working from home. However, I find that when the play reaches the 9 minute mark I always sit back in my chair and just watch in awe and be totally at peace with nothing getting anything done til the play ends.
Maravilhoso
Why work if you can sit and listen to this with your eyes shut? Just absorb the sound!
One of the best performances. I really enjoyed this ❤️

The concentration each of those individual players, are amazing to watch!.and how it builds beautifully!
Louche 'n loose, this is THE version of this piece!! The conductor is just that .... like a lightening conductor, the music flows THROUGH him! So authoritative, he is able to master the orchestra with his facial expressions .... and a cocktail stick!! Both hilarious and deeply impressive. Respect.

Unbelievable !! Jeesh i wish i could have heard this version live.
СПОСИБО маестро Гергиев, оркестр супер БРАВО 🌹🌹🌹👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤❤
This piece is the musical rendition of earning a goal you've been striving for over long years. It starts out slowly, but builds... bit by bit... each rise in tension is the self confidence growing. The snare, ever present and steady is the will to wake up each day and push harder and harder... as the journey progresses it gets stronger and stronger and then finally! The Crescendo, when you look back at all the steps you've taken and you triumphantly shout!
Perfect tempo ! Many versions are just too fast .
Too fast = not creepy enough
This is unreal. So good for the soul it's hard to explain
My friend, a movie composer, uses this recording as an ear-reference to how orchestra should sound. This is a beautifully conducted and performed reference of each instrument's timbre, intonation, spacing, as well as a reference to how recording should sound.

Danke für den Kommentar. Ich hab kaum noch damit gerechnet, deutsche Worte hier zu lesen. ^^
Dieser Dirigent hat ja auch eine Hexen Jagt hinter sich die auch sondersgleich ist
So it appears we have three theories as to why he conducts with a toothpick:
1. His conducting motions would be so violent that the baton would often go flying, so he downsized to reduce damage.
2. He does it to piss off critics who accused him of using a baton that was too small.
3. He does it to piss off critics who accused him of conducting without a baton, so he got the smallest one possible.
Which one is it? You decide!
D. All the above.

In the suggested videos column I saw one that said, "The most elegant key change in pop music." Instead of clicking on it, I remembered "Bolero" and came here. Now I'll go to that other video and see if it's anything that compares to 15:12 in this piece.
Okay, I'm back. My reaction, "Ehhhh"
Warning: if anyone wants to watch that video, you get about 5 seconds of the key change in the performance (Celine Dion singing, "All By Myself") and 27 minutes of musical technobabble and extreme over-analysis.

is he conducting with a TOOTHPICK? thats freaking awesome!
Yes. He conducted with a toothpick for awhile because the press would carry on about him being so theatrical that he would regularly lose a baton or three in one performance. Very tongue in cheek reply to the critics, but also shows he does not take it all too seriously.
The embodiment of musical bliss... Bravo!!!!!
Nice to see the snare drum sticks moving from the rim and strokes expanding with volume to the center Most difficult part to play in the orchestra
Bravo, each musician has precise timing according to the notes. the discipline is astounding too. Musicians have my greatest admiration of all humanity.
They played theirs hearts out. Every one of them. I like, at first it starts slow. Then he has them all at it. Outstanding.
I have always looked on this a desert caravan. That's what I see in my mind's eye when I hear this. The first part is pack animals - horses camels and people then towards the end I see elephants and large packs of supplies.
Omg, I used to imagine this too, as a child listening to my parents record. And the elephants at the end! Yes! Everything coming to an abrupt stop when the caravan reaches the market square. You are a kindred spirit. :)

Not easy maintaining crescendo for 15 min or so. Idea was to create impression of distant and approaching caravan traveling through desert or some other place. That's why it's at tits fullest at the end and passing in front of spectators.
