- Drone footage of Hatay province in southern Turkey and the city of Kahramanmaraş has revealed the extent of devastation from the two powerful earthquakes that struck the country last week.

Thousands of buildings in the region collapsed. The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes were centered in Kahramanmaraş and struck 10 other provinces - Adana, Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Hatay, Gaziantep, Malatya, Kilis, Osmaniye, Elâzığ and Şanlıurfa.
More than 13 million people have been affected by the devastating quakes. Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that struck Turkey in the space of less than 10 hours.

Turkey is a strong economy compared to most others in Europe. This notion of 'sending' money to every country is silly. Sure, talking through how to overcome it helps and will offer guidance for government officials, but help doesn't always need to be sent.

I deployed to Hatay province with REACT Disaster Response.....the devastation was truly off the scale but the people we met were truly the most hospitable considering they'd lost everything, I hope the area recovers well.

Mexico City has a building that is designed to withstand a magnitude of a big earthquake. I watched a documentary years ago really interesting
The Torre Mayor stands in the lakebed area where most of the 1985 earthquake damage occurred,[7] It was built with 96 dampers, which work like car shock absorbers to block the resonating effect of the lakebed and its own height.[8] These diamond-shaped dampers are seen architecturally on its perimeter. With this extra bracing, this tower can withstand earthquake forces nearly four times as efficiently as a conventionally damped building. The dampening system proved its worth in January 2003, as a 7.6 earthquake shook the city. Not only did the building survive undamaged, occupants inside at the time did not know a tremor had occurred.[7]
Honestly money should be spent toward innovating safer building along active tectonic lines
They should do a before and after on the Turkish city - Erzin. Not 1 single building collapsed because of their non-corrupt mayor 👏👏👏 a painful lesson to all those other corrupt cities.

The people from turkey are strong willed people. They will overcome the truma & rebuild the city back to its normal.
It's not about whether we have strong will or not. The point is that we are used to it. So its not a trauma at all lol. And we already knew earthquakes were coming, guess who didn't care.
Helps put things into persepctive but even with that one can not fully grasp the pain and hardship the people will endure for many years to come because of this horrible event.
Wow! But don't forget that pictures before the earthquake were taken in summer and those after are in winter. This also made a big difference
Only that the deciduous trees didn't have leaves. The collapsed buildings are the immense changes between the two views, regardless of the presence of greenery or not.
Believe me that actually the real picture is worse than this. I live in turkey and I saw that the reality is like a sci-fic movie. Those photos are just a small part of hatay and Kahramanmaraş. Every street is like that in these cities. The situation is incredible bad.
Unbelievable destruction, every other building had collapsed 🤯. Makes me thankful that we have pretty strict building regulations in UK. The Turkish government have a lot to answer for.

Turkey is not just a beautiful country, but a biblical land as well. Hope that they recover soon, but most of all that may find comfort in the peace that surpasses all understanding.
1:09 - The biggest shock was the complete absence of the 15-20 story building on the left after the earthquake. The frightening thing is that there was no way to tell from just looking at any particular building if it would survive or not, because it certainly wasn't just the oldest and most rundown structures that fell. This tall building certainly had to be one of the newer ones in this view but obviously there was nothing left of it except rubble.

I live in Turkey and I'm from here. Fortunately, we were not in a city that felt the earthquake. But every day a new earthquake survivor comes here... :(
So much beauty is destroyed, and my heart goes out to families affected.
and the terrifying part is, life goes on. People lost their friends and families, sons daughters and wives, and still need to go to work full time immediately afterwards where possible to make ends meet :(

Lots of old, earthquake prone buildings. The modern ones like the second to the last shown stood very well.
Its a miracle so many of these extremely instable buildings on tiny columns have withstood the shocks.
Can definitely tell which buildings were well build.

One observation I found is, the commercial buildings like Hampton and other night class buildings did withstand the quake, but not the public and residential buildings

Well yes, it is warning us. I mean in Turkey you can easily find 10+ building has 5 or more floors that you can destroy with a sledge hammer in 10 minutes of walking. As a country which is at risk of earthquakes yes, authorities and folks should listen to nature ASAP.

Heartbreaking to see such devastation. Earthquakes like many natural disasters cannot be prevented only thing we could do is detect it early so people may have a chance.

I live in a district of Maraş and i wish i go to center before earthquake for last one time. I born at there and go to much. I live my childhood in there. Im sorry about it. My dads friends die at there, theyre like in our family. One of my uncle friends say my uncle "Hakkınızı helal edin" this means take care to yourself maybe we cant see eachother. And he get shocked in debris. He is like in our family. There is to many people like that. (Sorry for my bad english). Take care of yourself and your family.

At 1:25 on the left, seems to look alright, but thats just outside ofc the damage we cannot see if even leaking water, gas .... walls that are unsafe or whole buildings that are now too dangerous to go in
That's because Erdogan offered amnesty to contractors who won't or didn't follow safety regulations after 2007 for a fee. Their official no. collected by the govt. is $3 billion. You can only guess what the real no. is.

Not true. Antakya the old town is rubble now including the century old mosque. Gaziantep castle extremely damaged, etc. I rejoice at every modern building still standing at least these people have survived.
Literally every tall building fell is what I saw.
