@sirdelrio cause in the Olympic national election, he lost his position to compete because he jumped the gun. So he even did not have the chance to take part in national election for 400m. That was in May. Then his team player Stevens, who finished at second in the national election gave his position to Ian. U can imagine how much pressure he had received before the 400m final. I still remember the scene when Ian even did not know whether he was the first one to touch. Down his head. Normally, he is much sure that he is the champion.
@sirdelrio The 400m free has always been his favorite race, he described in as something very emotional to him. Perhaps it was because of all the doubters - people were questioning his form because his charity work was interfering with his training
well i would say its because these athlehtes train so hard it conssumes their lives.actually they don't have a life.i can understand to a certain extent, they make it look so easy but it's the long, hard, painful training alongside making personal sacrifices to get to that level that makes them emotioial.
@Romleb11 well, to be precise is not allways the same side. in one direction is right, in the oposite direction is left. of course, is allways the side of his strongest oponent. if you are in lane 5 and you want to check on the guy in lane 4, in 1st 50m he would be on your right, but when you turn he is on your left. it's simple.
Can someone tell me if the suit that Thorpe wore in 2004 was anything like the suits worn in Rome 2009? This guy in lane 8 is still wearing a simple Speedo. I'm I being paranoid in that it appears that Thorpe is riding much higher in the water than everyone else. Any input would be appreciated.
The suit is a so-called "textile suit". This basically just means water can permeate through it and it has no floating capacity. In short: no, it's nothing like the 2008-2009 era suits. It still wouldn't be legal to race in this suit now though, because fina outlawed any suit that covers more than the upper-legs for men, but that's just be safe and prevent anyone from making another sport-breaking suits like arena and speedo did.
his suit was dogshit and only worn to make him money, thats why nobody else wore it even thought several tried the Adidas suit out The controversy around his suit was never about the performance, but the fact that it was made by adidas when the entire australian team was contracted to speedo
i was @ a gala today nd i swum 400m free for dqa 1st time-it was really bad, my hat nd goggles fell off after 150m nd i cudnt c but i finsihed it so i wasnt sad!!!! lol
He was initially DQ'd in the heats before Athens. He got Craig Stevens spot who graciously gave it to him. So an emotional rollercoaster to say the least.
Seriously??? Those Adidas swimsuits that Thorpe swam in were like wearing pyjamas compared to the Arena X-Glides that ended the body-suit era because they had air-pockets. No comparison - get an education about the history of the swimsuit controversy. Thorpe's Adidas and the Speedo that Hackett is wearing, were basically equivalent to just saving you from having to shave down. it was the Arena and the Blue Seventy that screwed it for everyone.
come on....3:43 ??? it is not that Hackett was close....it was ian who was absolutely slow!!!! at least he should have gone 3:41.....I blame his coach at the time....ever since he hired that woman, he wasn't able to break any wr......

nothing even close to the 2009 gear.

Please give world records in 200m-400m freestyle back to Yannick Agnel and Ian Thorpe who are more deserving than Biedermann
agnel never held the world record. But I get what you mean. 3:40:08 and 1:43:13 are amazing times that no-one in a textile suite has come close to.
@MCSchwimmerJayo do you mean fastskin ?
notice how he's always breathing at the same side no matter what direction he's going to see if the man next to him is ahead or behind
The made a lazer with arms

Does anybody know why was Ian crying at the end of the race? i mean, it's not like that was his first gold medal.

its the swimming suit that wins..
