A mate of mine and I were in my jetboat and went to flyfish the D'Urville River the South end of Lake Rotoroa here in the South Island. As we were leaving this little sandy beach up there late in the day we looked down into the crystal clear water and saw what we thought was a black log on the bottom - until it started SWIMMING AWAY!! My boat's an old Hamilton 32 - 13'6" and this eel would have been damn near the length of the boat!! When they used to race hydroplanes on Lake Rotoiti, just up the road from Rotoroa, if a boat sunk, no divers would go down to try and retrieve it - they reckoned there were eels down there that were bigger around than they were! God knows how old those eels would be! NOT the sort of thing you want to tangle with!

👍Awesome video guys besides the great fishing the ells were cool that one looked pretty darn big we used to have them and some of the smaller creeks and rivers in my area of Virginia but when they built the dam that separated the river in half from the upper river like then the lower River below the dam the ells slowly disappeared and died out I don't guess they can get to their spawning grounds or reproducing grounds my grandfather told me all the streams had plenty of them in them and they used to catch them and eat them but in my lifetime they had all but disappeared I only seen one that was rather large in my whole lifetime and that was in my childhood again cool video

"The old slap it on his head trick" lol, love it. Another awesome video mate and what a gorgeous day. One point of interest, i was watching a really informative video "Underwater water world of Trout" A very interesting fact: Trout kept out of the water for as little as 15 seconds will develop issues/injury to their Gills! It really pays to keep all Trout which are to be released, in the water as much as possible, which i note you pretty much do anyway.

Thanks mate yep I am very aware of the trout and do my best to keep them in the water, in saying that there was one fish in this video when even I was like “ put it back in the water you idiot” when I was editing it. So that was a good reminder to look after the fish better

Just be mindful, your forgotten equipment issue could have been much worse... I went on a surf fishing trip for rainbows and browns and realized I had left my waders behind. Luckily I was only 20 minutes from my destination. I broke a few speed limits making up time... thankfully not much traffic at 5:00am. My buddy left his Spey behind on another surf fishing trip and had to throw large Zonkers w a 3-4 W dry fly rig. Now that is funny😂.

14:36 That's the kind of Artist's shots that would make the cover of the old ''Fish & Stream Magazine''.
Texas tale about having an 8 lb. blue catfish take up a small perch I was retrieving in on my fly rod.
Never set the hook on him, just had that perch wedged in his jaws. Went work the next day & bragged about catching a catfish on my fly rod.

Trout Hunting NZ Yeah, you guys did a good job of taking care of them, they all swam away strong. Just getting it out there . I’ve seen many videos where guys’d have the fish out of the water for 3-5 mins. , holding them this way & that not realizing that gravity greatly stresses all fish when out of the water. Especially trout . And with dry hands ! Hey if we’re gonna let’m go, we might as well give ‘m the best chance we can to survive, right? In my experience (45 yrs.) a trout that has to be held upright at the beginning of a release, swims away very slowly, or both is usually doomed. Just sayin.......
