  • In this video I run through 3 of the most talked about marine speakers for your audio applications. JL Audio, DS18, and Skar Audio are the main competitors in this video and I explain the good, the bad, and basically the truth from a professional and personal point of view. There are many other details that go into building a proper quality sound system, but this is for the everyday user. If you want top of the line and have top of the line money ($5,000-$15,000) refer to a professional shop. This is the best bang for your buck, general overview, as an everyday user.
    *UPDATE* DS18 confirmed that their RMS is per speaker and not per set

    I really appreciate your videos. Very informative and well put together. I'm in the process of putting together a system for my 22' boat and have decided to go with the Skar speakers and Amp. I think its a no brainer after watching your videos and doing additional reviews. That being said, I'm struggling to find a quality head unit that fits my application. I would really like an opinion on the JL Audio MediaMaster MM-50 head unit but I'm open to other suggestions. Although the Kicker KMC5 is awesome, its really more than I need for my application. Keep up the great videos

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад +2

      Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I like the JL MM50 but I would go with the Kicker KMC4 instead. It is $50 cheaper, is identical in options and performance, and has a standard 3" hole mounting cut out diameter so that it is easy to pull out and put into another boat and replace with a cheaper model when selling the boat. Whereas the JL has a square cut out that would have to be covered with StarBoard and re-drilled if ever a change was needed to a different brand. It has a couple more options as well like being 2 ohm stable for direct amplification of speakers (although I know you are using Skar and an amp) and a 3" display over JL's 2.8" display. To me it is a no brainer, but it also comes down to customer preference. The Kicker just gives you more versatility into the future for changing up the system, whether you want to pull it out and put in a new boat or you just want to put in another brand (other than JL Audio). You can't go wrong with either unit. I hope this helps. Thank you for the support.

    Thank you for your down to earth perspective, perfect for my budget mind. I’d use the skar if I didn’t have to enlarge the speaker holes to use them. Can i Change out my 4 factory 6in speakers on a 2018 Tahoe TF boat and add 8 inch Skars to my jensen bluetooth stereo. I think the 8's would do it without a sub. I will add a skar 1000watt amp once they become available.

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад +1

      You can change out anything on any boat. As long as that stereo has preouts for your amplifier, otherwise I would say get a new head unit. Jensen is the bottom of the line when it comes to marine audio. Even my brand new boat came with one. I am surprised anyone is still using them. I replaced mine after the first use. Distortion was terrible above volume 27, the preouts were garbage and making my amp work harder, and the bluetooth was weak I couldn't even leave the boat. I hope this helps.

    Awesome Video and great Channel! really appreciate your content. Question: My current boat stereo is a Fusion AV650 (70W max x 4 at 2 ohms) with only two JL 6.5' speakers. For this season, I'd like to add another pair of speakers, but don't have the budget for an amplifier (gas prices hit hard!) Is it OK if I add a pair of 8" SKAR speakers without an Amp? My intent would be to add an amp next season. Would the Fusion headunit have enough juice to power the 8" in the interim? or would it be schwagg?

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  2 года назад

      Thank you 🙏🏼. I don’t recommend doing this as they require 125 watts RMS (250 watts max) each. They will work but I doubt you will get much out of them. If that doesn’t bother you until you get the amp then that’s fine. Just don’t judge them until you power them properly. They are amazing speakers.

    I am installing 2 Skar 8s and 2 Skar 6.5s in my 19 ft bow rider. I went with the Skar Rp-75.4 amp. Its got a newer Kenwood head unit in it the previous owner put in so im going to roll with it. Once I get the gain dialed in, how would you recommend setting the High and Low frequencies? Is there a good baseline setting i can use? Thanks!

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад

      First, make sure you get a fan for the amp. The 75.4 is good for 4 6.5s but not 2 6.5s and 2 8s. As for the frequencies, a good baseline for the 8s is around 80-100 hz and the 6.5s is around 150-200 hz. Adjust slowly as needed to dial them in. Also tune them separately at first and then retune them all together by how it sounds staged. Also, don’t go over 3/4 volume on your source unit and time the amp with all settings flat and unboosted on your source unit. Once you get this baseline you can adjust from the source unit as needed for each genre of music while it’s playing.

    Great content! What do you think about Fusion MS-RA770 for a head unit? I know you love KMC5, but the RA770 has wifi and thus, AirPlay 2 which as you know, is much better than Bluetooth. Or do you think quality of source material isn't that important? Aesthetics also make a difference to me. The KMC5 looks really dated, especially compared to the RA770. I'm thinking RA770 and Skar amp and speakers, when available. Thoughts? Thanks!

    I’m rebuilding a classic Boston whaler 17 foot. What speakers would you recommend. Space is at a premium and I’m building speaker boxes for them but want to avoid making them stick out from the side thus I need a speaker with a small mounting depth. I was thinking a pair of 6” in the front cause I have more space and then a pair of 4” in the back, I wanted to go with the skar audio but the depth is too much. So what speakers would you recommend? And do you think the 2 6” speakers would be enough?

I’m installing these on my atv by the higher floorboard, and I ordered a 5.25-6.5 enclosure for these. But I’m afraid to buy them and they won’t fit. Wasn't sure if 4 of the 6.5" and 2 of the 8" would be better over all. My Audiophile skills are lacking. I also have a 4ohm 600 RMS sub to run off the Skar 800 mono D wired 2ohm 600 RMS output. So watching this video, I think the skars are the way to go.
    Can I start with the 6.5 just with a head unit then if I feel the need to add an amp and 8s later ?
    Is there a head unit you recommend right now?
    Do I need an amp right off the start ?
    Thanks !

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  2 года назад

      So, when it comes to adding premium/upgraded speakers you need the power to get a good amount of sound out of them. If you upgrade the head unit to a premium one like the Kicker KMC4 or KMC5 it will definitely power them better with no amp but in the future you will need an amplifier to get higher levels of sound. I recommend starting with a new head unit first then add an amplifier and upgraded the speakers when you get more funds. The first and most important feature is the head unit. Poor quality source just gets amplified to louder poor quality sound if the head unit is poor. I hope this helps. PS: changing the speakers will get you better quality, but better sound comes from the head unit and the amplifiers.

      I got the Infinity Reference 822MLW and they are super well made, they feel just as stout as JLs. Super cheap too, you can get THREE pairs on Amazon for $250.
      They're made by Harman which is the same company as JBL. They know sound haha.
      They're 150Wrms per speaker but being 8" they're much more efficient than the 6.5"s so are actually louder with the same amount of power. And of course the bass response is insane.
      I 100% recommend them. Im never going back to 6.5"s, if you have space to widen your holes to 8" DO IT, you won't regret it.

      It has come to my attention that all the brands I recommend are out of stock at the moment. It is pretty late to be buying audio as most people buy it up in the winter and early spring to get their boats ready. Covid has played a major role as well. I recommend getting with your local audio shop to see what they have in stock. I recommend Skar, Kicker, or JL Audio. Other than that you might just have to get what you can at this time.

      Hello Blake,
      For the 8s and 6.5s I would run Skar 150.4AB Marine, but if you are on a tight budget the 75.4 would work it just couldn't handle it for prolonged periods at high volumes. The 150.4 has a built in cooling fan where as the 75.4 does not and that setup would cause it to run hot. As for the subwoofer and amp I would recommend the Kicker Marine setup. Whatever you decide to go with here I would just make sure to match RMS watts on the subwoofer with the amplifier. I hope this helps and best of luck.

      @@pugbongo Best decision I ever made! In total I have 6 sets of Skar 6.5's, 1 set of Skar 8's and one set of Rockville 8in tower speakers. 2 of the Skar RP150 amps and the Skar 300 monoblock amp. For bass I have one loaded 8inch bass tube. They have a 10 and 12 loaded tube now as well. The loaded 8 hits hard for what it is. I bought a Skar SDR8 sub and swapped it in the box and no one can believe it's an 8! I'm running everything off 2 group 27 AGM batteries. I have a $60 Amazon equilizer with zones selection and if I turn the bass down I can get several hours of mucic at the island. Granted my set up might be a little overkill for some but I waited untill Skar was 25% off site wide and have a $1000 system that keeps up with my neighbors $4700 jl system. The only down side is the Skar 6.5 are bigger than traditional 6.5's and are not a direct swap. They will require you to make a bigger hole to fit them. Easy to do with a Dremel though. The marine amps also seem to be on backorder as well so if the RP 150 is in stock, grab it!! you won't regret it and I would definitely suggest running an amp with them. Sounds like a completely different speaker. It's a night and day difference vs just running off the head unit. I had no audio experience and through watching FSH's channel and a few others I learned how to tune an amp properly and wired it all myself. I believe Skar is 15% off site wide at the moment as well. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar and from mild to wild you can't go wrong in my opinion. I would do it again in a minute!

      If you have not yet add a second battery in parallel with an isolator and make that battery a deep cycle marine battery. These are the marathon runners of the battery world. Starting batteries are not meant to be used for stereo use. Now, if you dont want to do all that you can just get a second deep cycle battery and run it in parallel, but you run the risk of draining your starting battery without the isolator. I hope this helps. PS: The higher amp hour rating (Ah) the battery has the longer you can run your stereo without draining the battery.

      @@domthebomb3938 If you are unfamiliar with these terms I would recommend you have a shop do this professionally as you can cause serious damage to you boat's electrical system if done wrong. Parallel is when two batteries have a connection through a switch/isolator that allows both to be used at the same time which increases the time you can use the electronics. Parallel is when the positive current and negative current of each batteries are wired together. So positive to positive and negative to negative. What this does is keep the voltage the same while piggy backing the batteries increasing the Ah. When you use an isolator/switch it will allow you to run them separately or in parallel.

    I have a 2015 Yamaha 242 limited s and the sound is not great! I was going to change just the speakers that I have 6 total (6.5 inch) I was going JL audio but I just can’t afford it or I just don’t want to! I live in Canada so my boat sits in storage for 7 months! My question is if I go for the Skar speakers will I automatically get better sound then what I have and do I really need an amplifier? When I go to the sand bar I’m there for hours and I just want back ground music don’t need it really loud! Can you give me any suggestions? If so I really appreciate it! Also do you really believe the Skars are a really good speaker? Thanks again and hope to hear from you soon! If you recommend an amp I need it to be efficient thank you !

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  2 года назад

      To start off if you want better audio I always recommend adding an amp. If you are looking just to replace your speakers then I would get something with a low RMS from a reputable brand. Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, Infinity, etc... all make a entry level marine speaker. Although the Skars are a great price, they do require more power than a head unit can produce. Ultimately, my suggestion would be to get the Skar Audio 6.5s and an amp. I believe you will be more than happy and you will always have the option of being louder if you want to. If you just replace speakers you can get better sound quality, but you may limit the amount of volume produced. I hope this helps. Also, if you do decide to go with Skar Audio speakers and an amp then go with the Kicker class D amplifier as the Skar Audio is a Class A/B, which is better sound quality but not as efficient.

    i used to look for the best bang for the buck and i have to say that jl audio are the best i have used..yes only 60 watts rms in a 6.5 but the sensitivity is high so you get more volume per watt. on a boat when you are sitting there listening to the radio with the engine off you are not demanding a lot of power from your amps so you dont have to worry about killing a battery too quickly. theres a reason why jl audio speakers are so expensive..they have the recipe right and they know it..i would like to hear the competition to compare but so many people have no idea on how to tune there eq and amp that they can make jl audio sound bad..i know when i had them in my boat mixed with some 8" mb quart wake board tower speakers it was ear piercing ..no subs..but damn..

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  2 года назад

      You are absolutely correct, JL Audio has the best marine speakers on the water. The sensitivity is nothing too great between the Skar Audio at 88db and JL at 89.5db. It is better but not enough to make it a point. If it was at 91 or higher I would agree with your statement. Like I said in the video, if you can afford JL go with JL. But with over 20 years in the 12V industry I can't in good faith advise people on a budget to quadruple their cost over the Skar when the sound difference is so minimal (when both systems are tuned correctly) that 99% of people would not tell the difference. Thanks for the input and I am glad to see that you have a decent understanding of 12V audio. PS: no subs here either, the Skar 8s are bumping!

      As far as the speakers the 6 1/2 inch Skar audios would be a decent sounding system, but you should definitely put them on an amp. Also do not get a pile head unit. They are terrible head units. I always recommend starting with a new head unit and building the system as you go if you can’t afford it all at once but if you use a terrible head unit you’re just amplifying terrible sound and usually are overworking the amplifier. I agree, getting M6 JL Audio speakers and not having them on an amplifier and tuned is a waste of money. The KMC5 head unit is an awesome unit. I would totally recommend getting that and if you are not going to amplify the speakers dont get any that require amplification. Look for some that are around the 50 watt RMS level. If you go with the Kicker speakers I recommend the Kicker 45KM654 speakers. You will be under powering them (It only puts out 40 watts at 2 ohms and 25 watts at 4 ohms) but they will work well with that setup. This should be a decent sounding system but it is not going to blow anyone socks off. It will be a great upgrade to what you may have now. Make sure to wire them in 2 ohm so that you get the full 40 watts. If you wire them in 4 ohm its only 25 watts. I hope this helps.

    • @THEFSHDUDE

      Then this should do the trick. If you just hook them up regularly (4 ohm) you will have more resistance and less power supplied to the speakers. The easiest way for you to get the best performance out of those speakers is to wire them in 2 ohm. To accomplish this just take two speakers (cabin or cockpit speakers) and twist the two positives together then do the same for the negatives and connect them to one channel. This splits the load down to 2 ohms. Then take your other two speakers and do the same. This will allow you to add more speakers too if you want since you will only be using 2 channels for four speakers. I hope this helps. I have done this in the past and had to remove it due to people trying to do it on their own and messing stuff up. Tuning is something that has to be learned over years of practice and knowledge. There is a lot of math, specialty tools, and time committed to a proper tune. If you dont know how to tune I would pay a professional. If you do have the gear and have questions or are stuck on a specific issues like staging, sound wave cancellation, or ohms law feel free to shoot me another message and clarify where you are stuck in the process. First tip I can give you is always tune with your source unit flat and undistorted.

    Great channel man! I have a 23 bowrider desperately need a stereo upgrade. I currently have 4 x 6.5 or 7” speakers and 2 x 2.5” tweeters i guess that’s what you call them on the dash... if i go with the kmc5 and 2 of the skar 6.5 and 2 skar 8”... what do you recommend for the tweeters on the dash? Also , would i need an amp? Or would that head unit be enough? Im trying to not have to add another battery 😂 ... it looks like the class d amp doesnt draw as much?

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for the support! Great choice with getting that head unit. That head unit will not be able to power those speakers properly. You will need an amp. As for the dash, I dont know any decent company that makes a marine 2.5" speaker. That you will have to probably do some research on. If you do want to go with a class D to save on power but lack on quality (not hi fidelity) then check out the Kicker and JL Audio lineup. I am only running a starter battery and a house battery and I have no issues. I do have an onboard battery maintainer that I plug in whenever the boat is at home though.

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад +1

      @@BernardosTraining Head units are not made to power high end audio. The kicker puts out 25 watts RMS at 4 ohms and 40 watts RMS at 2 ohms. You will be able to run them but it would be a waste of money. You would be severely under powering them. If you want to run speakers off the head unit you will want to get some around the 40-50 watt RMS range MAX. Kicker has some that 65 watts RMS and they are the lowest rated marine speakers they make. They recommend 65 watts RMS though for best audio. The Skar 6.5" are 80 watts RMS each. So as you can see without an amplifier you really can only power cheaper speakers which I do not recommend. I hope this helps. You want to match or be very close to the recommended RMS of the speakers you are running. The only way to do that properly with a good speaker is to amplify them.

    What are your thoughts on Wet Sounds vs Skar and JL? Also, could you do a video about wake tower speakers?

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад

      I like all three and depending on how you set it up they all are very compatible. Cant go wrong with any of those brands. I could do a video on wake tower speakers, but I have no way to show an install or test for everyone. I own a Center Console and do not plan on installing any of those. I like the Wet Sounds Rev 8s but they are pricey. If I was doing a set up I would probably go with the Skar 8s and buy the pods for them separately. My 8s are incredible. Great video. I’m looking to replace my JL 8.8. I have a m800 JL and and fusion head unit. I have one speaker with a cracked cone. The whole system doesn’t sound so great anymore, I’ve unhooked the cracked cone speaker and it seemed to help but it isn’t the same. It was professional installed. It was installed in in 2016. It’s been trouble free for years. Well the 8.8s have doubled in price since then and I don’t think I can toss that coin to go back with jl 8s. Just trying to figure out to replace all 4 with Skar 8s or just the 2 in the back, one of them is the one with the cracked cone. Also would the amp set up be sufficient with the skars? Thanks you and any info is greatly appreciated.

      Thank you 🙏🏼 If it was me I would replace all 4 with Skar. Make sure to have it retuned as they may not be optimized with the JL settings. You can try them out with current tuning but I’m assuming they will need to be retuned if the system was tuned properly for the JL speakers.

Should just have to adjust the filter frequency correct? Filter mode-HP. Input voltage to low and input mode 4 channel? Thanks

    Great video. Had some guys suggest these on the water the other day. Quick question. I have a 21ft Sportsman center console with a 4 x 45 watt factory system right now. I'd like to not have to cut or add additional speakers and would like your recommendation on what you think the best set up would be. Would 4 8's and an amp be enough? I'm not trying to blow people off the beach but want a good sounding system when I'm riding. I noticed the Scar amps are currently out of stock...any other recommendations?

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад

      I highly recommend replacing your factory radio if it is not a quality unit. The best sound starts with the source, I HIGHLY recommend the Kicker KMC5 or KMC4. Four 8s would sound amazing. As for the amp, I have had many people ask me this same question over the last few months. Unfortunately everyone is sold out at the moment. I recommend, in this order, JL Audio, Skar, Kicker, and Rockford Fosgate. If you find something available not in those brands and are unsure of it feel free to comment back to me and I will give you my opinion. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching and the support.

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад

      @@kalebenton4030 yes that will be fine. Just remember the speakers will be severely underpowered if running off the head unit alone. Hey man. So I ordered some of the Scar 6.5. why do you like the kicker head unit over the JL. Would a JL MMR40 be fine to push 4 6.5 until I can get the amp and subs ordered?

    • @THEFSHDUDE
      @THEFSHDUDE  3 года назад

      @@kalebenton4030 I prefer the Kicker source unit because of price for quality, it is a direct replacement (no extra cutting required), features, style, audio processor, and ease of use. The JL mmr40 is not a complete source unit, it is an add on unit. If you are going to do a direct source unit replacement it would need to be the JL MM50 or MM100. The 6.5s will play audio but be severely underpowered with just a source unit.
