Great conversation. Listening to Piehota present his views about the need to return trust and integrity within the leadership ranks of the Bureau had me think they need someone like him from the outside to be the face of support for the many employees still inside. They have to keep to themselves in high-profile cases if they are not aligned with the political party currently in control of the executive branch. The Bureau needs former leaders with views like Piehotas to mentor the conversations because the outside impression is, the leadership in the DOJ is swayed to one party. Restoring trust will not come from within. At least it has not happened yet. Thank you for producing this episode.

You can't say "I know all these people and they are good people," when their actions speak louder than any Persona they outwardly apply. Now with that said, we all have shortcomings and pitfalls span the entirety of our lives. In a government agency, you cannot allow yourself to fall prey to such things less you suffer consequences. The FBI has time and time again found itself since its inception, to be performing illegal activities that no American should ever fall prey too. It just cannot stand, that the Good of the organization can ever outweigh the Bad that we uncover every year.

He made a valid point right around the 1:22 mark of the podcast. The bureaucrats in the agency stopped hiring law enforcement officers. Individuals who enforced the letter of the law. Instead, they began hiring individuals who looked at the law and it’s enforcement contingent upon who the suspect was and his or her standing in society.

The 4th Amendment is there for a reason. Saying the Gov used to be 'the manager' of telecom and therefore is owed access to personal data, absent demonstrated probable cause is counter to the oath and mission statement of the FBI. If I remember correctly, the Bureau was attempting to unlock the iPhone without demonstrating probable cause.

I'm so glad Andy talked about neighbors. When a tree goes down in my neighborhood, everyone comes out to help. We have an annual Block Party that is well-attended. Guess what, half of us are Progressive Liberals and half are Conservative Republicans. It. Doesn't. Matter. I would unhesitatingly run into a burning house to save my neighbor and their family. When Covid first hit, we came together and brought groceries to elderly neighbors so they wouldn't have to go out. I stand with my fellow Americans ! Do we have problems here? Yes, on BOTH sides of the Aisle. But IMO, the quality of people, irrespective of political party, is still super high. I love my fellow countrymen, ALL of them. We need to start working together, not at cross-purposes.

P.s. Prior to the 2016 Presidential Election, I had lost some faith in my countrymen. Then, the Trump people tried to steal the election and so many Republicans said, "no." They counted the votes, the reported the results, and they stood by them in the face of incredible pressure. These were local people all over the country who said, "no, there is no wide-spread election fraud, and the people have spoken." Even judges, many of them Republicans, shot down over 200 cases for a - complete - lack of evidence and facts. .....My faith in America was renewed.

Here's the thing with "Diversity" initiatives.....a few decades ago, possibly even still today, the FBI (especially the leadership) is dominated by a bunch of White het men. If you want different leadership outcomes, like those discussed above, you need to shift the demographics of who is in these rooms. Book after book denotes that optimally, a WIDE variety of types of people with different backgrounds - especially in Intelligence work. Finally, the same rhetoric about "Diversity Initiatives" and "woke culture" and how the FBI isn't the place for social experiments....er....."Distractions" ? This same talk was used to try and keep Soldiers of Color, Officers of Color, and FBI agents of Color (and women) out of these organizations - especially the leadership structure.
Nothing changes if nothing changes. If you run an NFL team and it's not doing well, replacing the members of the Gatorade re-fill team isn't likely to result in any real solutions. Instead you have to change out the leadership, the coaches, the senior/key players. If none of these last 3 are changed, nothing will change. We NEED new voices in these organizations, ones that are chosen by merit, rather than MOST of the history of the FBI which consisted of hiring lots and lots of Het White males, despite whether they were qualified or not, whether they were the best candidates or not - they fit in "the club."
Seriously, look at the state of the FBI, a state that predates - by decades - any "Woke or Diversity Initiatives." This is the culture that allowed 9/11 to occur, this happened on the White het male watch.
Perhaps it's time for some new leadership, new coaches, new key players ? Let's get Different people with different perspectives who are ok with thinking outside the box, who aren't concerned with the popularity contest. But ability and effectiveness. If what we have isn't working, fix it, but fix it fundamentally.
