Trailer Your Pontoon Boat? MAKE SURE TO DO THIS!!!

  • The majority of pontoon boats have a similar setup for trailering and hooking the tow strap to the "bow eye". If you don't have something that's beefed up like this I would highly recommend adding in support to increase the longevity of the structure of your pontoon. I always advise against trying to winch your boat up onto the trailer using anything connected to the framework of your pontoon. This bow eye is only for securing the boat once it's positioned on the trailer. Always strap your stern and it's a good idea to add straps holding the bow down too.

I've been randomly watching your videos tonight and it's such a coincidence I'm watching this now, just earlier I was looking under my boat to see if when I re-deck it if I could extend the decking a little steal a couple more inches past my railing and I noticed somebody had attached the winch "eye" to "one" of the cross members and bent it to S@#$! I bought my boat this summer from a friend on my lake and had a friend take it out because my arm was in a cast so I didn't see it then but I'll assume it was already bent because this was totally inadequate, I'm the sole person in my prototype machine shop at work so I already have everything I need to make this right! Thanks 🍻

Glad the timing worked well!! Yes, I’m sure it was already bent to heck. Regardless, it shouldn’t be used to winch the boat up a trailer. It’s best suited to hold it snug on the trailer.

I'm certainly going to do this, this week!

If your boat doesn't already have this I 100% recommend doing it. Quick and simple, and critical for the longevity of your boat's structure!

Yep! I've seen too many bent crossmembers from improper setups.

Any idea where there is a "Pontoon Salvage Yard" in SW Missouri?

I'm not sure what they have in stock, but Bill's Boat Stuff used to have all sorts of pontoons and parts, and they were located in Missouri. Give him a call.

Thank you for the video. What are your thoughts on the different ways to update / replace fencing? In my area vinyl wrapping is growing for pontoon boats at a price that's lower than replacing them. Also, at my marina their are a few folks using Rustoleum Turbo and a few layers of clear coat for less than $150.

I’ve seen some great restorations with vinyl wraps. Definitely not cheap, but probably more cost effective than replacing. Pontoon Stuff will have their new railing kits available this fall, and will be around $2500 for most boats to give a complete facelift. I’ve had customers paint their own railings with rattle cans as well as using automotive paint and they were very similar when said and done.

I am planning on doing this on my build. I have some left over 1/4 aluminum. Do you think it would be ok to bolt the 3 cross bars together without the 90° bend on the front? Or should I find some new material that I can have bent?

Yes, that would absolutely work too!! I’ve seen it done both ways

Hello from Chicago! Do you have a template for the the gauges for the large console from Pontoon Stuff?

No Problem at all. I just created one using Fusion 360, and 3D printed it using ASA. I can now print them in any color.@@tomspontoons
