  • Tanzania is one of the top five (Malawi, South Africa, Rwanda, Nigeria and Tanzania)
producers and consumers of potatoes and potato products in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the areas
of Tanzania where they are grown, potatoes are among the leading cash crops for smallholder
farmers. For example, over 80% of the potatoes grown are sold for cash income (compared to
40 -50% for beans, maize and rice) (Mpogole & Kadigi 2012, and Kilimo Trust, 2012). More
significantly, for the poor households, potatoes are more profitable compared to cereals
(especially in the highlands), with experts estimating three (3) fold higher incomes from
potatoes (Kilimo Trust 2012; CIP 2008; Blanken et al., 1994).
    2) Potatoes are also providing calories and nutrition to nearly 350,000 smallholder farming
households and millions of urban poor in cities and towns in Tanzania and the rest of the
EAC. For example, a study by Kilimo Trust in 2012, found that consumption of potatoes in
the EAC doubled between 1999 and 2010, a rate of growth in demand second only to rice.
This growth in demand is expected to accelerate in tandem with urbanization, since potatoes
are among the leading sources of calories for low income earners in the urban areas. This is
due to greater versatility in potatoes‟ products and more stable price compared to cereals.
    3) The limited data on demand and consumption show a rapid growth from 475,450 MT in 2007
to about 1.1 million MT in 2013. Therefore, in comparison to the production data in Table 1,
Tanzania is currently a net producer of raw ware potatoes by about 700,000 MT/year. Most of
this surplus is exported across borders to Kenya, Zambia, Malawi and DRC.
