Does the Church Oppress Women?

  • Recently, Pope Francis reiterated to the editors of Jesuit journal America that there was no possibility of the ordination of women to the Catholic priesthood. The Holy Father’s clear theological explanation, however, provoked one New York polemicist to accuse the pope of “mansplaining.” Since the sexual revolution, especially, a not uncommon objection from voices within and without the Catholic Church holds that the 2000-year-old institution oppresses women. Is this concern a legitimate one or one rooted in misunderstandings in anthropology? After all, Pope St. John Paul II, apologized in his 1995 Letter to Women for occasions “when members of the church have reflected more the attitudes of the culture than the kind of culture that Christianity is supposed to generate in the world.” Using the Letter to Women as a point of departure, theologian Simone Rizkallah, Director of Program Growth at ENDOW (Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women), will take up this vexed question and help us understand whether the Church is the greatest oppressor, or greatest liberator, of women in history.

Approaching this from "but this actually means we are MORE special" is a weird angle that plays to egotism. This hinges on dominance as a consolation vs humbly accepting your role, nothing more nothing less. We need each other, period. Am I missing something?

In 1903, Pope Pius X restated the Church’s ban on women participating in church choirs. In his “Instruction On Sacred Music,” he ruled that women were not to be allowed any liturgical
function. However, Pope Pius XII, in his 1958 “Instruction on Sacred Music,” reversed this, but in actuality, he was only acknowledging the reality that women organists, soloists, choir members and choir directors were already common across Catholicism.

Women are fighting for priestly rights because they haven't understood and appreciated their blessings.
Only a woman can bring forth new life (body and soul) into this world.
A priest can only take the existing body and soul and prepare it for eternal life.
God will call women to serve Him as priests and deacons only when He gives men the ability to give birth to new life. Until now He has not.
So ladies, please stop fighting for the forbidden fruit and appreciate and thank God for the thousand blessings which He has showered upon you.
Eve had more than 2000 varieties of fruits to choose from but she wanted that one forbidden fruit.
    Don't repeat Eve's error.

It'd be interesting to hear your take on the institution of marriage that Catholicism holds so dear and women, specifically, that statistically, women are more likely to initiate divorce and single unmarried women are the happiest demographic. I have my own ideas about why this is the case, but curious about the Catholic Answers perspective on this.

@@leroykid1971 YT doesn't allow links posted in comments, but you can Google it. The data in question used several markers of wellbeing including physical and emotional health - as just one example, married women were shown to have an elevated risk of mental and physical conditions compared with single women.

@@infinitekindness3321 That’s a bias of a school of medicine to say their arbitrary amount of individual physical or mental illness is less healthy than not having kids. The species health is greater than individual health. Individual physical and mental illness is important, but securing the growth of the species is more important than mere individual survival or well being.
Illness is bad if it hurts the health of an individual, but it’s even more of an illness if it hurts the species. Promoting the model of health that over values the individual over the growth of the species hurts more than some anxiety or depression.
Also happiness has on objective definition, and it’s not mental or physical health. Happiness is that end or goal or purpose that is pursued for its own good and not for the good of another good. That end I argue is people, people are ends in themselves, the goal of life is to know people in noncontradiction. And since God is the only person that exists intrinsically. Objectively then happiness is in contemplating God.
And before you say anyone can choose their own happiness or revert to the physical and mental health definition.
      1. God is “The Word.”
      2. “My happiness” and “physical and mental health” are ‘a’ word.
      3. A word implies The Word.
      4. Therefore 2 implies God.

Single, unmarried women are highly medicated for anxiety and depression. There is also a high level of alcoholism and s3x addiction. They are not the happiest demographic. Severity is dependent on location, income, and age. In their 20s they have fun. But over 30 they become catastrophically miserable.
Only surveys show they are happy. Surveys are not in any way accurate and not scientific. Yes, I've read thousands of these researchers works. It's all garbage.
I advise single Catholic men to stay single and celibate as I am doing.

@@leroykid1971nailed it. Plus the real data (not based on academic surveys) shows that there are 2 categories. Under 30 and over 30. Women under 30 are having a blast. Over 30 they are miserable.
And all female demographics are heavily medicated.

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS: “As regards the individual nature, woman is defective and misbegotten, for the active power of the male seed tends to the production of a perfect likeness in the masculine sex; while the production of a woman comes from defect in the active power.
The active power in the male is intended to produce a perfect image of itself, a masculine sex. When a female results it is either because of a weakness in this active power or because of some indisposition of the materials, or even from a change produced by an outside factor - for example, from south winds, which are humid.”

The quote you provided is not from St. Thomas Aquinas. This specific quote does not align with his writings. The quote appears to be a misattribution or a fabrication. St. Thomas Aquinas, a medieval theologian and philosopher, did discuss gender and related topics in his works, but the sentiment expressed in the quote is not reflective of his beliefs as portrayed in his genuine writings.

Oppress women? The Virgin Mary, a human female, is the only human person to be chosen to be the Holy Mother of God and to be glorified in Heaven. She was immaculately conceived and is the Divine maternal Mother of Heaven and Earth. She is our Holy Mother. God has trusted her not only with His grace but with the son of God, Jesus to he conceived in her womb. God loves the Blessed Virgin Mary and the the Blessed Virgin Mary loves God. Now, how is that oppressing women? No man on Earth, not even the pope or even the angels in Heaven are above the Virgin Mary. Jesus, the Son of the Father, took on the human nature of a man. Jesus is one person with two natures: divine and human.
