    George is absolutely correct about subsidies and grazing animals in particular! I bought back three acres of farmland here in Ireland and planted over 1100 trees. It has meant financial impoverishment for me but an enriched life.

      Hell yes. Finances first. Remove subsidies and add a meat tax and meat will become largely inaccessible. Shame also works, very few people smoke in California in comparison to North Carolina. That's largely due to organized social shaming by isolating smokers out of the building and away from the door.

      @@christinash2235 Shame rarely completely works these days. Although, sometimes asking what they want to do better in life is the best. Giving them an aspiration of a better life to work towards. Sometimes that is more helpful to get smokers to quit.

      @Ian Smith pretty sure that won't happen. Since there are higher taxes on alcohol, cigarettes, and in some places on sodas, we have reason to believe it makes people less likely to purchase things that are unnecessary. Cigarettes have become so expensive only insane people smoke them these days.

    Definitely agree, picking up plastic on the beach here in Bali is futile! It’s not going to fix the problem one bit! It’s like using duct tape to fix the suspension on your vehicle 🚗! We need global laws to reduce plastic waste in the ocean and tax the hell out of meat. Meat should be the most expensive delicacy on the planet. No subsidies for livestock and oil! Outlaw single use plastics completely on a global scale. If I were king 🤴😆

    Thanks for emphasising the importance of subsidies. I saw an EU milk ad and was furious about the way my tax payer money was misused. While I listened I realised for the first time that we need system change by imagining that everyone decided to go vegan overnight. Oh the food shortages and mountains of rotting meat and dairy products. So system change it is! A great Q & A!

    It's true that we need to have systematic changes. And as George rightly mentioned, we need to remove subsidies for animal agriculture. But currently this is not being discussed at all in climate strikes. The solution had to be too folds, both systematic changes and individual consumption changes. Public advocacy and education on a vegan lifestyle will help drive the change of individual demand, which then also drive the particular solutions of systematic changes. Not to mention that as more and more people go vegan, the people in power will also have to be aligned with vegans to remove animal agriculture subsidies and introduce incentives for farmers to transition into plant based agriculture. The problem we have currently is that the very people who are demanding systematic changes do not mention the need to remove animal agriculture subsidies.

      @Chandi Patah honestly, I'm not defending him, I only recently heard of this guy. My research revealed he was vegan a long time ago, and changed his stance in 2010. A few other things happened and then 2016 he decided to be 97% vegan. I don't know what he calls himself now. Whatever the case, nobody can call themselves an environmentalist and at the same time support animal agriculture.

      I think when he says consumer change doesn't have much power he is referring to just the action of boycotting. The dairy industry has been brought down because of public advocacy (which he states is a good thing) which has then lead to boycotting, but boycotting alone does not necessarily spread the idea, it's the advocacy.
      Also, I really don't think it helps the image of the vegan movement to end a critique of someone's points by questioning if they're "really" vegan as a way to undermine their opinions on the subject. We want a vegan world, not a vegan club.

      Well obviously. It's hilariously stupid when people say you can't change things because it comes down to individuals... The population is made of individual...
      We're not fucking ants or bees that have a hive mind mentality for fucks sake...
      Punish those who damage the environment or subsidize those who save it as opposed to those who destroy it. Good actions should be promoted... It's very simple...
      It just doesn't make money so rich people don't care except if they'd have half a brain cell they'd realize it saves money, the environment and animals including us.

    • @Gibbons3457
      @Gibbons3457 4 года назад

      Individual changes haven't been working for over a decade. The constant insistence that it's on the individual comes directly from the biggest polluters on the planet. Most people aren't causing anywhere near the majority of pollution of any kind.
      And most people, especially the poorest of our societies, cannot easily change their lives to be more ecological. They're too busy making ends meet.
      Governments need to take responsibility for buffering up the current economic system of unending growth and constant consumption. We have to hit the problem at its core and that is the half dozen fossil fuel companies responsible for doing most of the damage to the atmosphere.

However, it's certainly less destructive than non-organic farming practices and causes much less harm overall, by an order of magnitude. He doesn’t seem to care that animal rights are also the last, best hope for human rights given that they are their logical consequence. He doesn’t even come at ethics from a utilitarian viewpoint. I can’t figure out his ethical foundations . instead he has a vision of direct democracy as an antidote to big business power, and some sort of countryside nostalgia. I had high hopes for Andrew Yang when I heard about his idea of introducing UBI but as his campaign has gone on he's looking more and more like a right wing libertarian. Most of his answers tend to suggest that UBI will solve everything, like saying that getting the boot off of people's neck will mean people make more sustainable choices, and lately his lies on Medicare for All have exposed him a bit. I like his ideas on nuclear power for achieving net zero emissions, but I personally prefer Bernie for the nomination

    • @josephlauziere9254
      @josephlauziere9254 4 года назад +1

      @@_b-e-n_ I respect your view, but UBI would solve many more issues than you might think. The government often assumes it can spend people's money better than they can, which is so often not true. The federal jobs guarantee and minimum wage would not resolve anything for many reasons but mainly because they do not address the root cause of the problem, most of those jobs will not be necessary and will not replace automated jobs quick enough. It doesn't make sense to force people to work unnecessary jobs for the federal government just for the sake of "people want to work". That's crazy IMO. The Freedom Dividend creates much more freedom than a Jobs Guarantee. In regards to the sustainability point, have you heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? It's a psychological theory that basically states that people aren't going to be concerned with things like composting if they are worried about personal survival issues, like paying rent. There have also been studies that show financial security can increase IQ. Do you think you and your friends and family would be happier with getting $1,000 every month or getting offered a job working for the government?

    • @_b-e-n_
      @_b-e-n_ 4 года назад +1

      @@josephlauziere9254 I definitely see the pros to UBI, I think it's a forward thinking idea especially when you consider how much automation will change how we think about work. But, saying that, whilst it's been shown to work in small areas where a select few are given a basic income, I think if you were to apply it to a whole country or society, inflation would almost definitely come into play, since the base level of wealth suddenly goes up. My other issue with it is that, giving people a set free income to spend, would indirectly lock them in as consumers, spending more on general stuff, alot of it being junk, ultimately just propping up and boosting a system which has gotten us into the mess and environmental crisis we're in now. Not saying it wouldn't work but I don't think it's the silver bullet that Yang sells it as
