Great programme. You can see why there is now so much crime and poverty and zero jobs up north now, all the industry taken away, what were the community's and all future generations supposed to do for work and all the lost apprenticeships

Heavy industry and heavy decline. It was very sad to see. All those empty industrial buildings as well that used to have hundreds of workers inside.
If only the government had the foresight to improve training into other fields and promote more niche technology and infrastructure work. The industrial workers would have valuable skills that have gone to waste.

I'm afraid it's the story of Britain since at least the 1870s. We had become so massively complacent with imperial markets that we stopped investing, stopped innovating, got stuck in old, outdated methods and as a result started to rot. Our education system (always bad) completely failed to improve and give children of so many generations the skills they needed to adapt to new industries and a more knowledge based economy. No government has ever really got to grips with the scale of the change that was necessary. Even now, many in Britain still hark back to some imaginary past where people (very mistakenly) thought we didn't have to change and adapt because we controlled the empire.
