Wow after 23 yrs i finally found the game i used to play as a kid in El Salvador , my family moved to the US, in 1995 i was 11 yrs old , after several years i tried to find the game but i didnt remember the name of the game and internet wasnt available for me at that time so no luck lol to make the story short i continued looking and once again no luck 🙄so today april 11th 2019 i decided to google arcade games from the 90's lol and i went thought a ton and BINGO ! Took me literally 24 yrs 😱but i got it ! Thank you very much to to person that took his time to upload this vid 👍👍
Earth is almost flooded in Stage 1; its oceans and caves have been colonized by aliens in Stage 2; Jupiter was turned into a star in Stage 3; and Neptune had been blown into pieces in Stage 4. How depressing.
Little known fact: Pulstar and Blazing Star were created by ex-IREM employees (it was confirmed) that we’re the maker of the original R-Type trilogy, so this is technically R-Type 4, just changed to not actually be R-Type since IREM still had/has the copyright on it. Blazing Star of course would be the 2D R-Type Delta considering the amount of ship options in Blazing Star itself plus the extra 3 ships in the R-9A Arrowhead, the R-9C Warhead, and the R-9ø Ragnarok.
For all those who say this game is an R-Type clone: The rumor is that after several employees who worked on this game left Irem, they worked on this one. So, there is going to be some similarities. I suppose this game could be considered an unofficial R-Type spinoff.
Unlike Nazca, which was formed by a bunch of pissed off ex-Irem employees; we'll never know if Aicom was the result of similar frustration. nukesandknives@blogspot.co.uk
Yeah, as I understand it, Pulstar was supposed to be R-Type 4. Irem scrapped the project, and the team took the work that they had already done and made it into this game.
clyde radcliffe I believe Aicom broke off with the support of Jaleco but they ended up bought out by Sammy. Still, these guys lasted 12 years (1988 to 2000).
One of my absolute favorites shmups on the old Neo Geo, along with Blazing Star. Two games that absolutely pushed you to learn them, so that you could improve and beat them, which I've never done to this day.
It looks super easy when someone else is playing, right?! Until you pop in a quarter and 45 seconds later, you get a game over screen. This is one of the hardest shooters I've ever played. And ive played Gofer No Yabou on the X68000. Fantastic game though. The way it looks and sounds, ill never get over it. Top tier stuff right here.
jeez, when i was 7 years old, i remember playing this in an arcade machine, I would get so sad when the continue screen came up. I was like: nooo!! I need a coin or else she's gonna die!! DX
Pulstar was so awesome. I too I remember reading in Die Hard GameFan and other places that Pulstar was going to be R-Type 4. The sequel, Blazing Star, was also developed by Aicom but under a different name, Yumekobo. Although the gameplay was much faster paced than R-Type and Pulstar. Interestingly, Blazing Star's development name was "Pulstar Blast". Also, for those that haven't played it or heard of if, LAST RESORT on Neo Geo has a lot of graphical similarities to R-Type II. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of the Irem staff that worked on R-Type II also worked on Last Resort at SNK.
40:36 Kaoru Yamazaki: Don't wake me up now, I haven't rested yet. Naomi Yamazaki: It's been 3 years since you've been sleeping. Background alert sound: You fail it , You fail it, You fail it, You fail it, You fail it ,You fail it, You fail it, ... (Note: in Blazing Star Naomi is missing, this was just a joke to make it clear.)
In case anyone's curious, here are the names of the bosses(excluding the Stage 1 boss), according to the stage intros exclusive to the Neo-Geo CD version: Stage 2 Boss: Galla Naga Stage 3 Boss: Carellpi Stage 4 Boss: Kira-Ge-Woiare Stage 5 Boss: Eira-Beera Stage 6 Boss: Ibuprowfent Stage 7 Boss: Kuuka Final Boss(Form 1): Mentos Final Boss(Forms 2 & 3): Bhi
One of the very few games with CGI rendered graphics (although there's still more than enough hand-drawn spritework in the game), that actually looked (and still look) GOOD.
@OpticalFascism How is it a rip-off when it's the original Irem team that made R-Type who made Pulstar? Infact it was originally named R-Type 4 but was renamed Pulstar when the team moved to Aicom.
What I meant is, that certain graphics that LOOK deadly aren't. Examples include the debris that the second boss throws around, and the fire prominances in the third level.
To the people that say this is an R-Type rip off, Aicom was comprised of former Irem members who worked on R-Type. This is more an homage game to that series than ripoff.
Thanks for this one Schlauchi, haven't seen you around IRC in a long time though. Pulstar is quite underrated, sure it's an R-Type ripoff, but it's also done by former Irem employees who worked on the R-Type games of old. It's more an homage to that series really.
I love this and I want to play it again...the one problem is the fact that I can't find a single mame or neogeo rom for this game with everything in it.
After all this years playing lots of shmups and not getting any better at them, I just enjoy them as much as possible. Their plots, their soundtracks, the sceneries, the gameplay, but not trying to turn into a Replay Burner :V
@@NCC-0000 I'm in the same boat. That is why Blazing Star is my favorite because you just respawn right there, and can quarter feed through it. What I do is try to improve my score, which basically means I'm getting better at the game even though I can't one CC it. Last night I finally came back to Pulstar and did better at it then I used to, because the faster paced (but easier) Blazing Star taught me a thing or two about shooters! Looking at this video I kinda doubt I'll ever be good enough to beat that last boss, but I can at least get far enough into the game to enjoy a good chunk of it now.
@ Hi, after re-reading my comment. Oh boy how wrong I was, listen buddy if you want to learn how to shmup by yourself, well in my case, I couldn't since I couldn't figure out what exacty do to learn a shmup. So in a summary, I discovered the video "How to Get Good at Shoot em Ups in 7 Days" by Shmup Junkie and believe me, he opened my eyes!!! He explains so good how to change your mind for shmup, how to CORRECTLY use Save States for training, how to route stages and how to strategize, so that I could 1CC lots of shmups, still I'm proud to 1CC Border Down Route 6A which is hard AF (And until now, my greatest achievement), now I'm trying to clear Mushihimesama Original 1CC. TLDR?: Watch Shmup Junkie's video, learn from him, believe in yourself, and like he mentions, don't try to be a "Michael Jordan" of Shmups, but a Shmup player which can enjoy and clear shmups by yourself. Good Luck!
I meant to rate this comment down, In this game, certain graphics would make the game almost unwinnable. Thus, your ship "phases through" those items that appear after bosses or as part of fancy graphics. Trust me, I beat this game before. Also, the Eternal Centipede(fourth boss) is in the background, and does not hit you until it goes into the foreground.
Hmmm.. was never that enamored with Pulstar. The graphics were just too garish and cheesy compared to the original R-Type 8 years prior - they looked like a Mega Drive shooter on steroids. Last Resort was cool and atmopsheric but also fell well short of the first two RT coin-ops.
Um... The T weapon, the R weapon , the ring weapon, the fact you cannot launch your force, bosses have very little relation to real R-Type bosses(except for the Gomander-like stage 6 boss) the missile type is different... Tell me, have you ever actually played this game? The bullet patterns and music is very different, many of the enemies(though not all) are not at all based on R-Type, and it was worked on by ex-Irem people.
It's an arcade machine and their is a console version of it. It cost much more than a SNES or Genesis because it has more and faster chips in it. The carts are also huge which plays a role. Technology moved so fast back then that it didn't take long to get outdated though. So it is 16 bit, just one of the more powerful iterations of 16 bit you'll ever see.

Just like Metal Slug who made by others ex-IREM employees but they made In The Hunt and Geo Storm
They also made viewpoint as well. Which is another outstanding shooter on this platform.
Looks pretty cool, but boy oh boy they just did the bare minimum to avoid copyright infringement. This totally is R Type 4!
Pulstar & blazing star are extraordinary games!!!!!
Viewpoint is also a great Neo Geo shoot 'em up!
Ya I'm hoping for Viewpoint to arrive on the Nintendo Switch.
Pulstar is the tougher of the two, but Blazing Star has that annoying "BONUS!"

I say it is a Gradius ripoff

Pulstar is legendary with ABSOLUTELY AWESOME graphics and STUNNING gameplay

My fave shmup of all time. It's plainly an R-Type clone but it's full of imagination. Reminds me if Alien Soldier was made into a shmup.
makes no mistake this game was wicked hard
Great video. I am very fan of Pulstar, since its launch.
One of the very few games with CGI rendered graphics (although there's still more than enough hand-drawn spritework in the game), that actually looked (and still look) GOOD.
Congratulations on surviving that heinous mission!
Lot of R-Type with some Gradius/Salamander thrown in here and there.
Would've been interesting to see if this were actually R-Type IV.
I wonder what that would've made R-Type Delta or R-Type Neo.
You mean R-Type Leo

Got this game for Christmas 1995! for my Neo-Geo. Great memories. Still looks cool;
I know that your comment was posted 2 years ago, but...
The fourth boss' name isn't "Eternal Centipede". Its official name is "Kira-Ge-Woiare".
If only R-Type Final referenced this and Blazing Star.
Alotta 'by the skin of your teeth' moments in this play through.
Of course you had to include the epic intro music.
😢😂❤❤🎉😢
Why does this version not have the difficulty number above the charge meter?
